The last video from our ride. This was a fun section twisting through the brush out in the flats. The video shows how slow I am, but it sure feels like I am going faster when on the trail.

Our final day takes us from Bear Valley, through Cape Horn and Valley Creek, then along Hwy 75 to Clayton. From there we ride up Kinnikinic Creek to Little Bayhorse Lake, and climb to the top of Ramshorn Mountain and Keystone Mountain. Then descend back down to Challis where are vehicles await. This was our shortest day, but this is the longest video because the climb to Ramshorn Mountain was s...

Day 5 was another long transit day, riding from Warren to almost Stanley. Most of the route was on easy dirt roads, but there is some sidehill exposure than can make you nervous. We took a detour on the Smith Creek trail, which was a really fun and tight trail two years ago. They have now widened the road and installed culverts on most of the stream crossings. So what was once a really unique A...

Our morning ride on our layover day in Warren. We left our luggage in the cabins so we could enjoy the single track trails of the day. We rode up Chimney Rock Road, which is really fun and pretty easy. This took us to War Eagle Lookout. From there we rode the rocky road past California Lake, and rode down the Jeanette Creek single track. This trail was fairly challenging, so I was glad we didn'...

This looks like a fun place to ride. I maybe could sorta convince my wife to try a little singletrack out here...but that's a big maybe. If you don't mind can you email me your starting point. I thought I knew where you were riding but now I'm not sure. Thanks. Oh, and the smilie face and arrows was a cool place to ride through the rocks. At first I thought it was a rock wall you had to ride up and over. Whew!
I might be able to ride with you one this trail. And not fall down!!
I rode it fine the other direction two weeks earlier, but messed up on that rock crossing this time. I am not sure what happened. I guess my rear wheel washed out, because down I went. Luckily I didn't have to fall very far.
Nice. Looks really dry.
Yes it was. We expected mud because it snowed two days earlier.
👍!! ! 💙
It looks a little like Skull Valley...
A lot of the west desert looks like this.
You gotta pay the troll toll
A Rekluse is one thing I wish they made for a TW200. But having ridden a TW for 20 years I've gotten pretty good at manual clutch control. ...and you riding into your 70s is an inspiration! :)
Beeeep beep beep beep beep! LOL Then we proceeded to go off-course....somehow. But it was fun!
What not to do at Wildcat lol
September 1st 2025 planning this exact ride with friends and family. Thank you for sharing. What bike are you on?
KTM 350. We used to go to Idaho in Sept, but started going in July due to forest fire closures in Sept.
What was the flow at corn creek during this trip? Nice video!
@@snow4runner The flow is listed in the introduction of the video.
Good mix of trails on this trip. Amazing how much of what you rode I've ridden but on several separate trips. A few weeks ago I discovered the "backway" from Cape Horn to Lower Stanley. That's a nice diversion off the main highway. Very cool Trip. Thanks for sharing.
I first had the idea of circumnavigating the Frank Church several years ago, but on my first look it looked like an eight day trip. I whittled it down a bit and planned a trip for 2022, but we couldn't complete the loop due to a forest fire. So we rode from Challis to Burgdorf and back. That checke off the Custer Motorway and Pinyon Peak routes. Last year we circumnavigated the Selway/Bitterroot and that checked off the Elk City Wagon Road and the Boundary/Divide ATV trails. Thus I was able to shorten even more. Our loop was fairly direct and included some pavement along scenic rivers, which shortened it to five days, allowing us to have the fun layover day in Warren riding some of those awesome single track trails. But it was still a very long trip.
Thanks for the Video. Since there’s a locked gate preventing a loop between this and Germania I’d have to go over Bowery. Have you ever ridden that one?
@@jamesbarber6165 No I haven’t. At one time I considered riding Germania but decided it was too risky for me.
@@HDeeGardiner ya it looks kinda hard. But I don’t mind getting off bike and slowly rolling over things.
That's a dream job....do operate that heavy equipment way out in nature with no one else around.
Those look like great trails.
Wow! This looks like an awesome ride. I recognize quite a few places from the IDBDR.
I've been on rides when the chain broke but a broken shock is a rarity. On one trip up there we rode out to Cottontail Point (old lookout) and took and ATV trail back into Warren. There was one steep loose rock downhill section that wasn't fun. Going to War Eagle is much easier for sure. The trail after the lake hasn't changed...rough and watery. Glad you got to ride Jeanette Trail. It's fun and relaxing...for a singletrack :). Oh, and thanks for the trip tracks. I'll use your tracks as a base for my trip next year.
@@klnrgj01 Apparently a broken shock is a common problem on the Beta X-Trainer.
Wow, looks fun. Well, except the part about your bike running poor.
I thought the Frank Church Wilderness of No Return was a non-motorized area, I.E. nothing mechanical, even a bicycle?
That is correct. That is why we rode around it - not through it.
In the first few minutes are they prepping the road for logging perhaps? The ATV trails are fun even if they are overgrown a bit as long as they're passable. Hwy 14 is fun and the overhang is iconic. Some of the paved sections give a rider a break from the ruts. :) I'm glad you got a video of it. If you don't mind could you email me your GPS of the route. I'm hoping to put together a similar around the Church ride next year and want to incorporate some of your tracks. If you don't have any tracks no problem. Thanks.
Maybe logging is the objective. I was wondering why they were widening such a seldom used trail. We rode much of the same trail last year and it was a blast. They did the same to a fun trail near Big Creek. It was super fun last year, and now it is just a normal road.
Maybe fire breaks for future fires
Wow, nice view of Painted Rocks Reservoir! Always cool to see the deer as long as it's not right in front of the bike. I've driven on the Magruder in a truck but riding it on a bike is a dream too. While not the best road in America it's still pretty scenic. I'm glad the Clinton Administration lost the battle to close this road back in the day. We have ridden a good part of 505 Divide trail on our bikes. Fun ATV trail! Hope Elk City has a permanent plan for fuel in the future. Maybe they solved but I haven't heard.
Last year the owner of the Elk Creek Station Café had some issues, but they opened up again prior to our trip last year. The café is currently closed due to water supply issues, but they have ice cream and various supplies, as well as gas. I have heard there is another place in town now, but I don't know anything about it.
A month ago I finished the older OBDR from Lakeview, OR to Walla Walla, Wa. This was the longest motocamping adventure I'd take. 2 years pervious we did a weekend motocamp which was my first. Having said that, at times I struggled with the extra weight on mostly 2-track and a few ATV trails. I can't imagine what that's like on a singletrack. I give you all credit for doing those trails! The sidehill with luggage would be brutal for me. I would have been in pucker mode on that tore up short downhill bit too! How come you had to be towed? It is sad to see so much burnt forest though but other than that I love watching the ride so far!
Over the years I have gradually refined my luggage setup to better reduce and distribute weight. It does take some getting used to, and normally we avoid single track with luggage. On day 4 we rode some fun single track without luggage. I really wanted to ride the Butcher Knife trail, and that one was pretty easy with luggage, for the most part. The Divide trail, however, was quite difficult and we all had some serious pucker moments. None of us want to ride that trail again - even without luggage. But Butcher Knife / Divide made a great shortcut, and a couple of bikes were limited on fuel capacity. At camp we figured out that I had a clogged fuel filter. Years ago I installed a cleanable filter, but have never bothered to clean it. Lesson learned.
I would boat with that woman any day of the week.
Is the direction of travel on the Magruder restricted to only one direction, or open to both directions? I ask because I'll be traveling this road in a Tacoma and it doesn't look like there's room for 2 vehicles to pass. Thanks!
It is open both directions. Most of the road was in pretty good shape in 2023. There are a few tight spots, but most of it shouldn't be an issue if you meet oncoming traffic.
I'm confused, there is no such thing as a class 7 or 8 River rating. Class 6 is as high as they go, and that's insanely dangerous, even for experts. What river rating system, is this video using to claim a class 7 or 8? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_scale_of_river_difficulty
I don't know why, but the Grand Canyon uses a 1-10 rating system. Just divide to 2 to get the standard rating.
Well done folks. Brought back fond memories. We are in El Paso and did the Salt every year... sometimes two or three times. My first two trips rowing my own boat were on the Salt- as warmups for a subsequent Grand trip. That keeper hole at Pinball got me a lot worse, probably because I was in a raft and not a Cat. The rear of the raft gave the hole something to grab a hold of and the boat stood up on end at about a 45. I leapt my fat ass onto the bow and brought it back down. jumping back on the seat, the boat came right back up. This time I jumped out to the bow, grabbed the lines and just shifted my weight back and forth until I got spit out. When I looked back, our sweep boat with one of my mentors was in the eddy above just shaking his head. You can imagine what he said I looked like that night. On your animal sighting, the first guy was right, but the second one could have been. Ringtail (Cats) and Coatis are both native to Arizona and both are indeed related to the raccoon. But Coatis walk with their tail sticking straight up, making yours a ringtail.
That looked like a pleasant and entertaining ride. 😊
Yes it was. My daughter hasn’t ridden in a year and a half. She did really well. Some of the trails are pretty narrow and the overhanging trees add to the challenge, especially for my tall son.
What a great trip and big water. Good for you for getting the kids out there to experience that- I think its super important. That standing wave at Black creek rapid was a kicker. I ran the right line my first time down but the left line was very clean and straightforward when I ran it the second time despite looking more difficult. The hot spring is one of my favorites. Ran it with my girlfriend (now wife) in 2017 with just us in a 14' boat.
We all went right on Quartzite this year and had clean lines. We were hovering around 2k for flows, so about the same level.
Good choice. I should have gone right but I was so focused on going left I didn’t consider better options.
minute 4:20 is such a weird move on Lower Corral into Pinball. We had a boat break an oar blade on that rock then two swimmer in Pinball
Yeah, that one surprised me. I thought the cushion would push we back, but just floated right up on top and into the bank. The boat behind me lost his oar when he hit my boat with the blade. Last year we flipped a boat in Pinball and chased it all the way through The Maze.
WELL DONE❗️❗️❗️
Cinematography and audio puts you right there. One of the best whitewater films I have seen. Bravo❗️From a 76 year old River Rat living in Red Rock Texas. THANK YOU.
Near Torrey? That does look like a cool trail.
No. Between Green River and Price.
WOW Dee! I guess I will not be doing this ride. The older I get the harder the rides look.
That is the truth. I wear a lot more protective gear than I used to. We are also pretty cautious. Our "prime directive" is to not get hurt. We have turned back on numerous trails when the risk was too high. And we ride pretty slow. If you watch other videos of the same trails you will see a huge difference in speed.
Enjoying the video's. There sure is a lot of riding out there. Its our go to Fall and Spring
Are there any designated forest service campsites on FS500? Any recommendations on the best month to ride. I noticed no big adventure bikes in the group.
There is a small campground at Rocky Ridge Lake, but no other developed campground that I am aware of. This is part of the IDBDR route, so it is commonly traveled on big bikes. I think the snow usually clears around mid-July. Sept and Oct are more likely to have closures due to forest fires, but you can go until the snow flies.
@@HDeeGardiner Thanks for the reply. 👍
What great scenery. Nice video!
Enjoyed the video, great drone shots.
Looks like a nice loop Dee,! I was watchin, but didnt see any snowmen! 😜
You need to read the video description!
@@HDeeGardinerYeah, see winky laughing emo. Was a wee bit of humor since I knew what ya meant....mostly it was a stroke for your vid in the algorithm
What dry or wetsuits are the kids wearing? We have a July 1 launch. Thank you.
I don't know what the kids had, but I have always had good luck with NRS gear. I have never used a dry suit. A wet suit and/or paddle pants and jackets is usually sufficient.
the kids voice is so annoying. Good video otherwise
I love this point of view! Fun watch!
This has been a most glorious year indeed! 🌚🎉 Well done.
Beautiful country. I hope to re-visit this area again one day.
Great TH-cam Dee. Wish you put wher you were riding for when I get my are out of a sling I would like to hit some of those trails. Love the music too.
Rotator Cuff? I hurt my rotator cuff six years ago, and it is still causing me problems. So far I haven't elected to have surgery. I have a few neighbors that had the surgery and it was a long recovery. Most of the trails are in Utah, but some are in Idaho near Bear Lake. I haven't ridden most of them for many years. Getting too old I guess.
Ran this in 16 and burnt knob was so much easier then this year.. gonna do it on my klr next hear with hopefully a buddy or 2
I also rode there in 2016. Comparing my old video, it looks much rockier near the top than in 2016, but most of it is about the same. We had one guy on KLR in 2016 that broke his leg on this rough road. Here is my old video: th-cam.com/video/mO058_JuJO0/w-d-xo.html
@HDeeGardiner buddy pulled his off-road trailer up that and another in a duramax also made it in 16, this year the rock obstacles where way worse, took out my box side on the way down.its just my observation is all.my klr would make short work of it but as always what's easy on a bike isn't always with a rig
I came across Magruder 9-10 years ago, east to west, in my Honda Fit with 4” ground clearance. I was creeping up that long grade to Dry Saddle about 5mph, and almost to the top, when a helicopter approached from the south & almost landed on the roof of my car. Dust flying and the rotor blast almost blew me off the mountain. I was sure it was Federalles of some kind busting me for some wilderness infraction I was not aware of. They set it down just above the ridge to my right and a minute later I was at the saddle. It was just fire fighters picking up supplies from the truck they had parked there. Talked to them and they pointed out smoke from a fire way south by the Salmon river.
@@Bitterrootbackroads I'm suprised they were fighting fires in there . They quit fighting the wilderness fires in early 90s. About the same time the bright idea to plant wolves came into play there. Try bringing a horse trailor up burnt knob . Horse trail goes right off the top
Wow!!! What road or trail did you start on first the day? I’m going to the place a minute in! Wow.
We started on French Creek, which led us to Railroad Ridge, which is supposedly the highest road in Idaho.
@@HDeeGardiner hey thank you! I actually found it just by looking on maps for that big basin and ridge with no trees you were on!!! So cool.
Some, not all of the trails look familar. Is this out near Woodside? I think I rode some of this area a couple of years ago if so. We just scratched the surface of the trails we did ride. Fun with some challenge for sure!
Yes. People used to refer to this area as Chimney Rock, but many now call it Woodside. I watched your video before we went.
This looks like a fantastic trail. Riding close to the edge keeps you on guard for sure. On my list of trails it goes! 😊
It wasn't as scary as I expected. You are seldom really close to the edge.
I duckyed around 70 of the 81 miles, amazing experience
