Birding at Salt Lake City's Tracy Aviary
Seeing incredible species from around the world at the Tracy Aviary along with a few other incredible birds.
Tracy Aviary Website: tracyaviary.org/
In this video I visit the Tracy Aviary for a full Saturday of adventure. I was oddly heading out there to look for some hummingbirds that have hung around and not migrated (aka wild birds), but I also definitely enjoyed many of the species that call the aviary home. The Tracy Aviary is a great organization with a mission "to inspire curiosity and caring for birds and nature through education and conservation." I encourage you to check out their website I linked above!

Congrats on your lifer Calliope hummingbird. I've only seen a ruby-throated hummingbird, but I hope to see more hummingbirds someday.
AN OWL FOREST?! Now we're talking! 😀 Lovely video Hawkin, looks like an awesome place, thanks for taking us round with you!
Was so fun to walk around the aviary and film all the birds. If only it was that easy finding owls in the wild haha. Glad you enjoyed!!!
Wowwww! VIP badge haha! Love that place. The bird I liked watching the most was the Toco Toucan! I want to go see toucans in the wild so bad! Someday maybe we can do it together! INCREDIBLE VIDEO, the editing was phenomenal!
Getting to see toucans in the wild would be insane! Thanks for the kind words
Sooooo nostalgic. I haven't been since 2014, takes me back to high school - thanks for showing!
Sounds like it’s time to go back! I know they made some additions since 2014 too
Another fantastic video! Soooo cool seeing the Townsend's warbler!
Yeah such a pretty bird!
Real genuine, down to earth birding. Love it!
Pretty good day alright.
Great video Hawkin! I really enjoyed seeing those views of the Townsend's Warbler! Fun adventure!
Hope you noticed the hat I was wearing day 2 😉
@@HawkInTheLens Oh wow haha don't know how I missed that 👏
Awesome video! I just wanted to tell you that I also use Stan Tekeila's books for when I go to a state! They are super useful and handy. There is also a newer version of the Birds of Utah book you have, containing 8 more species. Maybe you've already seen some of these additional 8!
Oh wow haven’t seen that! Hope I’ve seen them haha
I take the photo of the Black-capped Kingfisher, myself .
Burrowing owls like to eat bugs small animals. They will place turds next their holes to attract bugs.
My experience with burrowing owls in florida was amazing. They will literally nest next to walking paths. They are not fearful of humans as long as you don’t approach them. Quite remarkable.
Such cool birds to watch!
What a lovely video - that Aviary seems like a really cool place! And congrats on the lifer :D
I love the Aviary. More on it next vid :)
Ive always wanted to go to the international center but I couldn't imagine what would be out there in a business district, but now I know. Thanks for another great video. You are getting so close to your goal🎉
It still really confuses me as a hotspot. I don’t see as many species as some people but I guess the strategy is to check the ponds by the Hilton and then look in all the trees as you walk around
So kind of you to give me some tips! I appreciate that. I'm excited to go. Also, sounds like your next video is going to be awesome 🦅🐦🦆🦉
Congrats on your lifers, Hawkin!
Another great video, thanks!
That was great that you got your lifer Townsend's warbler.
Was very happy to see that cool bird!
By the way, the Black-Capped Kingfisher is widely distributed in tropical Asia from India 🇮🇳 east to China 🇨🇳, Korea 🇰🇷, and Southeast Asia. Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR only has the Spotted Dove and the Green Emerald Dove. While the Spotted Dove is plentiful, the Green Emerald Dove is not readily seen as it likes to hide in dense green foliages.
Good morning to you from Hong Kong 🇭🇰, Hawking. Guess what ? Yesterday as I went out on my morning walk, I saw for the first time in all these decades living in Hong Kong 🇭🇰, along the beachfront promenade I saw as well as being able to photograph and take video of the Black-capped Kingfisher ! What a ‘LIFER’ for me !
Wow! Kingfishers are such great birds. Do you post your pictures anywhere or just take them for yourself?

Great shots….enjoyed your sightings! I think I’m lucky in my part of Wisconsin as we are right by the Bark river and marsh and there is a recreation trail right here. So many people park and hike in at spring time for cranes and Hurons. This year for the first time ever for me ( and this far East) we had a flock of yellow headed black birds that stayed for the summer. You remind me very much of my late mother, our many hikes she knew every bird by their call…and sure enough there it was. She was right every time. ❤️
Living so close to a great birding spot is the best! I’m quite close to a river here in Utah too. Happy birding out in your area! Hope you get some more birds coming through the fall migrations
I wonder if any of these birds know that we call them the "least" of their kind.
Where are you in Wisconsin?
.
The Ferruginous Hawk is found from southwestern Canada, through the western United States, and into northern Mexico. This hawk lives mainly in open country, including dry prairie, sagebrush, and steppe deserts with short vegetation containing large populations of small mammals.
Hi, good afternoon to both of you from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. I searched online and found that the Skuas are a group of seabirds about seven species forming the family Stercorariidae and the genus Stercorarius. The three smaller skuas are called jaeger in American English. The word “jaeger” is derived from the German word Jaeger, meaning “hunter”.
Oh I love the footage of that Black-necked Stilt, what a beautiful bird! It's very inspiring to watch birding videos from other continents. :D
Always great to have viewers from around the world. Thanks for watching!
This was such a fun adventure! Really enjoyed the drone footage and shots of the Ferruginous Hawk!
Beautiful video! 🌸 Congrats on 500!
These bird song apps DON’T work for birds in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. Very unfortunate….
Love love love
!!👍💙💙💙💙
I heard a Northern Flicker here in Minnesota today, but I couldn't get eyes on it. It would be a lifer for me.
Oooo hope you find it soon! They are great birds.
This is by far my favourite bird! Around Vancouver BC we use the name whiskeyjack. A very charismatic and friendly bird that is not afraid of interacting with humans. Its known to hang around subalpine campsites and steal food from humans. Its stolen a whole clif bar straight out of my sibling's hand once!
Wow what a story! I heard that nickname but haven’t had one rob me yet
An incredible video! Blue Grosbeak is awesome
Another curious question ……… is there any nocturnal birds in Utah that you wish to identify and hope to catch on camera 📷 ?
Hard to get them on camera at night. Without light the videos don’t look the best. I’d love to see a Common Poorwill though!
Hawkin, good morning to you from Hong Kong 🇭🇰. How do you know the sound of the bird if you had not seen it before ……. 🤔
Not speaking for Hawkin, but there are a lot of great online resources out there for learning bird songs. The Merlin bird app is a nice one that has a database of songs/calls to listen to ahead of time. Also, the Merlin app can help ID songs in the field (though I wouldn’t rely on that alone!).
Charming video of a very enthousiast birder and a very nice bird...!
Thank you!
Woohoo! You got it! Challenge still on! Great video.
Not many to go now!
Congrats on the Blue Grosbeak! Amazing editing in this one as well!
Thanks for being such a big supporter!
Holy smokes so many swallows! Great close ups too!
When they finally give me the courtesy of landing I can get a nice close up haha. Otherwise it’s so hard to track them
I've seen lots of blue grosbeaks here in Alabama. They are wonderful birds.
I am hoping to see a male in their beautiful blue color soon! They are very wonderful
Truly enjoying your site. You do a great job
Thank you! The kind words mean a lot
Great video! Glad you got to see the Canada Jay!!
Thank you for sharing your shots of those birds in flight, even though you weren’t happy with them. As a new birder and even newer photographer, it’s encouraging to see that other people struggle too! Thank you again! I love your videos!!
It is definitely a journey that’s for sure. Best of luck as you dive into these hobbies! If you ever have any questions reach out on my Instagram and I could do my best to answer them!
Nice vid! Is it okay if I do a challenge like yours, but with my Stan Tekeila Birds of New Jersey book? I thought it was an awesome idea!
Absolutely! I hope you can accomplish it!
That was enjoyable. There's lots of neat birds here in Alabama including the anhinga.
Would love to add that bird to my life list someday
