Ropes
Personal project inspired by two Bens: Ben Watts (benwattsdesign.com) and Ben Koppel (benkoppel.com). The main purpose was to learn how to use Wire Solver in Houdini. Faced quite a lot of technical difficulties along the way but it was fun and I learnt a lot. I could not find the textures for this project, so I had to create them myself in Cinema 4D (here is the breakdown: th-cam.com/video/6IDKFYw98dM/w-d-xo.html). Everything else, which is simulation, shading, lighting and rendering, was done in Houdini and Octane Render.
I am also sharing the climbing rope textures created for this project. The archive also includes Cinema 4D (Octane) and Blender (Cycles) scene files with all materials set up and ready to go. Free for personal and commercial use: mega.nz/file/71dQRaDJ#4kM6G_3MyK1Yhv39iRXezjfyqKhv4yvT-9XS4hZYRkg

      The short answer is no, it won't work with alembics. But there might be workarounds depending on what exactly you are trying to do.

      @@DimaShishkov I have a sphere that morphs into a squirrel (my profile pic) and they are scattered as dynamic clones. When the spheres expand they collide and it would be nice if they had a touch of soft body to them. As a test with around 70 clones one frame took an hour to calculate, but the final simulation has waaay more so that's why I came here. Not really necessary.. but would be nice! Thanks for the reply btw

    Hi. Thank you for giving us such outstanding work for free. The result is simply awesome and the renders are a pleasure to see. No matter how silly it might seem to create a high poly model to bake textures out of it and then wrapping those textures on a low poly model, it still is the way most CGI is achieved even today. Even after you've shared the textures, I think I'm still going to try to recreate this in Blender, just because of how pleasant was to see your workflow and for the pleasure of modeling in Blender. Cheers and . . . thank you, this time, for posting this video.

    I am getting a bit better result if I remesh the grid (0.05 target size and 10 meshing iterations) after the group by range node but using the top raw of the old grid as hard edges group so the point order doesn't get messed up. Since cloth sims work better with triangles, you get a smoother surface and you get a nice flat line instead of the sharp spikes where the points are pinned. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, cheers!

      Thank you, you are too kind. I've been into 3D for more than 10 years I would say but started taking it seriously only about 4 years ago. Before it was just a hobby and I did not have hardware to do anything serious especially before GPU renderers came into game. This showreal is a collection of the most favourite stuff done over the last 3 years. Some of it was rendered on my home machine which is already extremely old at this point (you can find specs in the comments, I ve already answered that question). Some were rendered on my work machine in a previous studio, which had 2 1080Ti's. Nothing too crazy in comparison to what other people use. Thanks again for the kind words and have a nice day.

    • @DimaShishkov

      I am not using ProRender, but it should be pretty straight forward. The only issue would be, if the current version of ProRender does not support displacement. But even then you could maybe get away using only bump mapping if it is not a closeup shot.

    just out of curiosity no offense, is it really fine to make a showreel out of personal, non-commissioned project? i mean to ability to translate what clients wants vs what technically you can make is totally different

    • @DimaShishkov
      @DimaShishkov 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the type of project, personal works can tell a lot about your skills: concept development, composition, lighting, storytelling, scripting, graphic design, character design, UI design, compositing, color grading, sometimes even programming etc. The list goes on and on. Most of the time working on personal stuff you do everything or at least the majority of things yourself. Clients not always commission you with a detailed brief. Sometimes you're given creative freedom (though not very often) and you need to manage all the aspects of a project yourself, especially if you are a generalist. Often clients commission an artist, because they saw his/her personal projects and liked them. Also how do you imagine new designers are supposed to build their portfolios and showreels? There are no concrete rules. Just make what feels right to you. I landed my first job as a 3D designer because my future creative director saw my personal works and invited me to an interview. This showreel and my current portfolio helped me get a job in a studio several months ago. So for me it is more important to share the works that I like and enjoyed making, no matter, if it was personal or commissioned work. This is of course my experience and point of view. I am not telling you that you should do the same. Just do what feels right to you.

    • @DimaShishkov
      @DimaShishkov 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. Thank you very much for liking and subscribing though it is not a required condition so that I answer 😃 The yellow grid at approximately 2 minutes is a projection preview in Cinema 4D. Basically what I do is I applied a gradient to the whole mesh and make sure the gradient is projected from the side and fits the mesh. So that the black part of the gradient is at the bottom of the mesh and white at the top. So that when the camera is looking at the mesh from top to bottom, white parts of the mesh appear closer to the camera and black further. It is a common trick to fake depth map/pass. So in Blender you would unwrap the model with Projection from View option or play around with the mapping in shader. Hope it helps.
