Who awards athletic scholarships?
Are full-ride scholarships guaranteed for all four years? Not necessarily. Athletic scholarships are often renewable on an annual basis, with some multi-year offers available. These scholarships are provided at various levels, including NCAA Division I (DI) and II (DII), as well as NAIA and NJCAA institutions, meaning there are thousands of schools that offer such opportunities.
How much scholarship money can you receive?
Only about 2 percent of high school athletes receive athletic scholarships, but the total amount awarded across DI and DII alone exceeds $3.1 billion each year, meaning there is certainly money available. However, it’s essential to recognize that most athletic scholarships do not cover the full cost of attendance. The amount awarded depends on the athlete's sport and whether it is classified as a head count or equivalency sport.
Head count sports are always full-ride scholarships but are limited to revenue-generating sports: for men, this includes DI basketball and DI-A football; for women, it covers DI basketball, tennis, volleyball, and gymnastics.
In contrast, equivalency sports often offer partial scholarships, with coaches having discretion over how they distribute scholarship funds. For example, a coach might give a full scholarship to one elite athlete (though this is uncommon), or they may divide the funds among several athletes, which is the more typical scenario. Equivalency sports for DI men include baseball, rifle, skiing, cross-country, track and field, soccer, fencing, swimming, golf, tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, ice hockey, water polo, lacrosse, and wrestling. For DI women, equivalency sports include bowling, lacrosse, rowing, cross-country, track and field, skiing, fencing, soccer, field hockey, softball, golf, swimming, ice hockey, and water polo. All DII and NAIA sports are equivalency sports. Coaches often follow specific guidelines when determining how much scholarship money each athlete receives.
Recent Changes and Opportunities
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA DI Council passed new legislation that altered the rules regarding need-based aid and academic scholarships for student-athletes. Starting August 1, 2020, teams in equivalency sports no longer have to count need-based and academic scholarships against their athletic scholarship limits. Before this change, athletes had to meet specific academic requirements for additional aid to not count toward the team’s athletic scholarship cap.
This change means that student-athletes can now stack unlimited need-based and academic scholarships on top of their athletic funding. With many families facing financial strain due to the pandemic, this rule change provides more opportunities for schools to offer financial aid to student-athletes, particularly at institutions with high tuition costs. As a result, maintaining strong academic performance is more crucial than ever for prospective recruits. Good grades and test scores can help secure more financial support, even when athletic scholarships are limited.
