There's really one thing I do, and that's understand the historical significance of the events. Like you understand the seven major stories of scripture, you can understand everything. 1. Is of course Genesis and the story of the Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 2. Is the story of Exodus, and the formation of the Jewish State. 3. Is the Judges and Kings, and the establishment of Judah and then Israel. 4. Is the Captivity of Babylon and Assyria. 5. Is the restoration by Cyrus. 6. Is the Gospels. 7. Is the formation of the Church. You, like any other story, relate these stories to yourself, and draw conclusions about morality and human behavior, and lessons on the way life should be lived. It's very multifaceted, but you need the Law as a basis for interpreting it--you need to know God's desire and heart--to be able to properly render the Bible to a perfect understanding. You need God preeminent in your studies to gain interpretive power over the Scripture, as you need to know God's heart.
