    January 2025 UPDATE By Way of update since our viewing of Pete's Dragon she sold and the new owner kindly dropped us a line to update us and bring us news of all the work he has undertaken. She is now renamed Dragon and after carrying out extensive work in Milford Haven the New owner with the mast unstepped motored the boat to Portishead on the Bristol Channel before making his way up the Avon Canal where she now lives while he continues the repair and referb work. We wish him the very best of luck in what is sure to be a great venture and we are sure the fruits of his labours will be a wonderful boat that will take him anywhere.

    I found the exact same make n model for 5 thousand dollars... problem is it has no engine....no sails.....and there's uncertainty regarding the keel as it's in the Water.....im just drilling some holes and adding a motor mound to put a long shaft outboard to sail it home- some 90 miles....Im stoked as this design is awesome ....it will be worth all the blood ,sweat n elbow grease to rebuild such an awesome vessel 😅

      Hi Thanks for your comment. Very interesting to hear you found the same model etc. also sounds like a far better price if there is much work to do as well. Have to say we loved the design and the space onboard and seriously liked the idea of being able to lift the keel and beach the boat. This alone opened up all kinds of possibilities and all kind of anchorages become viable. Sadly with Pete's Dragon we felt there was just too much work for the asking price. Mind you sine our viewing she was listed with a broker and sold so someone felt it was worth it.

      Like the videos mate it reminds me of my own search a couple of years ago. Learning where you are willing to compromise, because we all have to… I found a really nice Countess 28 and so my advice based on my experience is; doing an internal refit yourself is really difficult and specialist, and expensive, so get one that is nice inside, that doesn’t need much doing you want a good cabin environment or else no one will want to go sailing with you 😂 Mine needed nothing doing, Justin the previous owner had it well sorted and I didn’t understand how important that part was until I had it for a year or two. And get a good reliable engine. It doesn’t have to be new. Mine is a DV20 but rebuilt and simple and so rock solid. No rust anywhere, no leaks, I have a dry bilge on a 1980 boat and engine and that is gold. Everything else I think you can make a list and work through over a few years and get sorted. My sails are 20yrs old and baggy but they work and we sailed 500NM Edinburgh to Orkney return this season, my rigging is indeterminate but passes my visual check. Those things you can fix over a bunch of winters, but a rough wet saggy or smelly old interior is a mission. But that’s just me. We all prioritise different things and have different skillsets hey so this is just based on mine. RAAF skills though so obviously high level 😂 🇦🇺

      @@DM-tn6jd Many thanks for your comment and advice. Its always great to get good insight from someone thats walked the same path as it were. I Confess Double Tee struck a cord with us although beyond our budget with a bit of the saggy headlining issues in places but far better than some westerlies we have seen in the past. We have hopes that perhaps there is some wiggle room in the price, but if nothing else we have found that the Seahawk ticks many boxes for us and its a model that will be on the radar. Sound like your own purchase was a very lucky find and she sounds great. I believe the have a great reputation as a Seaboat. Hope you will continue to have many years of happy sailing with your Countess.

    As you say, keel is rusted, plates doesn't look good, bilge is awful, electricity need to be redone from 0, all the varnish are dead, lot of moisture. And we have no information about what cost the most on a sailing boat : sails & motor. So, to shortlist thist boat, you should consider working full time on it during approximately 6 months, with hard job to do (keel refurbishment), and taking some risk, because you can be sure you will have bad surprise. This boat is waiting for someone who doesn't know the amount of work needed to make it sails again.

    • @newkippertales7524

      Hi Thanks for your comment. Yep I think your right on the money there, could well be a lot of skeletons in the cupboard here and a real Pandora's box once work started. There is a lot of work to be done and even at 30k which is well below market trends for these boats I think you could spend that again just trying to work through things. As you say it would be a full time job for a good six months for someone. To be frank, aspects of the appeal but the work does not.

    Right from the start I got a bad feeling about the hull. Did you see the rust comming out of what looks to me as a crack all around? If a boat like this goes for $60k and this is $30k , then this is a nobrainer. You will dump at least $30k into this boat before it is saveto sail

    • @newkippertales7524
      @newkippertales7524 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Thanks for your comment, Yes the hull would need a proper inspection by a surveyor me thinks. It also has to be admitted the Keel plate / ballast plate concerned me a lot given that if the seal between hull and plate breaks down then the water is direct contact with the inner workings and bolts etc. In this case that seal was very poor so who knows what damage has been done and as was suggested, the whole thing needs dropping and checking. May also have noticed some cracking at the front of the keel plate assembly.

    I have delivered several of these boats. Well cared for they can be good if this layout, draught and performance is whay you are looking for. But the lifting keel adds complexity and therefore cost. From experience. This complexity in design is their greatest downfall particularly as most of them have not been maintained as they should have been.

    • @newkippertales7524
      @newkippertales7524 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks very much for your comment, very insightful. As you say the keel is such a mixed blessing unless well cared for. Indications are its very expensive to maintain or get reconditioned and this example didn't inspire confidence in that area.

      Hi, Thanks for your comment, we have indeed been talking about the liveaboard option, but also its the more space onboard thing that also attracts, but also while Kipper is tough as old boots, she is a motor sailor at heart , and the prospect of better sailing performance also attracts and as you know from our Vlogs we do seem to have gone from one issue to the next and not been getting much of a sailing return on the effort, but who knows perhaps we have at last trued the corner ;-) but all this being said we would find it hard to part company with Kipper

      Hi. Thanks for your comment, The thing about twin keel is that its something of a trade off, You get the ability to dry out which means its not all about marina hopping, plus you can explore the rivers and estuaries as we have tried to do with Kipper and not get hung up on water depths. But the cost is you do lose performance to windward as you dont have the same bite from the keel and thus get more leeway. To give an example Kipper is twin keel, and on one stretch of the cleddau river which runs East/West its over a mile wide, on one side of that stretch the tanker ships berth East/West to load and off load to the oil refinery. While sailing that stretch to windward (West) close hauled with Kipper we made a tack out of one mile then tacked back a mile and just made to windward about the length of a tanker say 800 feet! so you can see thats not great for progress to wind. But saying this some boats like the Colvic Countess and Westerly centaur in bilge/twin keel form have longer keels than kipper and they are better angled for giving a lift to wind so do perform a lot better. They also say that Twin keel can be a handful in a big following sea and don't track to well, but I haven't experienced that problem personally. Talking to friends with Bilge keel boats like the ones mentioned they accept that 45 to 50 degrees is the closest they may get to the wind. I confess part of me wants that windward performance of a fin keel, but another part likes the ability to dry out and not be to fixated on the depth gauge. Anyway hope this was useful.

    Did this journey as my passage plan for day skipper last week. It went quite well and looking back was very enjoyable despite the pressure being high at the time. Nice adventure for my first time or as skipper. First of many hopefully😊

    Good to see you have it sorted. £1500 for an air leak - ouch! I have a searover 28 on the east coast which we sailed (mainly motored) round to Skegness from Menai when I bought it back in 2018. We put nearly 400 hours on the motor in 2 weeks and the beta never missed a beat. I used to get a bit of diesel leakage from the filter housing which would siphon fuel from the tank when moored. New filter housing (buy it from a tractor shop- Cheaper) and she's sorted. The only failure I've had is corrosion of the small aluminium washers under the leak off unions on the injectors. Easy to replace but again, buy from kubota dealer!

      Some good tips there Russell Thanks. Yes indeed with the repair we had replaced everything from the tank onward so I guess logically there was only the tank left to look for problems before we called in the pros. But I confess I doubt we would have found the problem as it was only visible under pressure. I did think they would repair the pipe but no they got 2 new ones made up including one for the return feed at a cost of £150 each so it all mounts up. But we are up and running once more and with luck can start getting out on some proper adventures like yourself.

      Yes indeed taken a very long time to get to the bottom of it and frankly I don't think that we would have found the problem in the tank ourselves. But we had changed just about everything else so very few places left we could have looked. 🙂

    Really enjoyed your video, the reason for watching it was to show my wife Jack Sound which I've often talked about. And then lo and behold you followed Happy Quest the gaff cutter through! After Jack we set a course for Ramsey sound going North. I've just been informed by my wife that she has crossed Jack Sound in her Kayak!

      Small world Dave, Yes indeed we got set up to go through for the first time but we spotted another boat heading south on the last of the tide and bailed it so we could let them through so we had plenty of room, but finished up followed Happy Quest through which was very handy, but she did give us a few nervous moments as she seemed to flirt with Tusker rock but I'm sure it was all a matter of perspective :-) Obviously your good lady is far tougher then us lightweights sincerely hats off to her. :-)

      @@newkippertales7524 Hi Again, Not sure if I'm reading you right but was that your first time going through Jack Sound? If so congratulations. Happy Quest is engine-less so we would have been taking advantage of the stronger tide at Tusker. If you look back and keep on the Transit of the Black Rocks and the Western end of Skokholm that will keep you off the Crabstones and Tusker, and once you can see the Garland Stone you can turn north. My Father was a friend of Rubin Codd he was the last man to farm Skomer. Rubin had a clinker boat with a Seagull outboard. When I was a kid Rubin came back through Little Sound and then through Jack, as we crossed Jack we came across a Duck swimming to the mainland she was followed by her Ducklings tweeting loudly and keeping line astern. Rubin said he knew they did it but it was the first time he had seen it! It's a place of many stories!

      @@daverolstone5669 Hi,Yes indeed it was our first run through Jack sound, we had set up initially as engine running but on tick over just as insurance just in case things went to the bad but mainly under sail but a boat came through the other way just on the last gasp of tide heading south so we broke away and let them have the space and looped around to try again, in the meantime we found that we were now following Happy quest and I don't mind telling you we were glad about that, but we had some very nervous moments when she seemed to be heading straight for Tusker but suddenly she luffed up and was away across the bay, and just left us for dead wow what a boat. Hats off she looked amazing and we were very jealous of her abilities as a sail boat as we embarked on a rolly crossing of the bay killing time before we could get into solva. Happy quest looked amazing you must be so proud, I know we were impressed and no mistake :-)

    Hi we just bought a colvic sea rover 28 and want to install a diesel heater where did you mount the exhaust? Did you tap into the original exhaust system

    • @newkippertales7524
      @newkippertales7524 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. The exhaust was a headache for us. first plan was to take it directly to the side of the hull. But the rolling boat meant a danger of water getting into it and would need water traps etc. but perhaps it can be done. Second plan was to run it aft to the stern, which is what we did in the end, but as I had to pass it below the cockpit locker etc we had no access to get to it and pin it up and off the hull. So only way was to insulate the pipe as seen on the vlogs. Seems to work but frankly I have thought seriously about moving the whole thing and mount the burner in the engine compartment somehow and find a way to get the exhaust off the hull. While the double insulation of the exhaust works it worries me sitting on the hull as there are massive heats involved. Hope this helps.

      Not used it much to date but so far so good. As mentioned in vlogs, I took the view that it was cheap enough and if it didn't last at least, I would have all the structure in place to upgrade to perhaps a better known brand. Link is to the same kit we bought. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B4S9QYWN/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B0B4S9QYWN&pd_rd_w=6QnFM&content-id=amzn1.sym.8d91a06c-52c8-441e-afa4-963e53268566&pf_rd_p=8d91a06c-52c8-441e-afa4-963e53268566&pf_rd_r=2KHD4PB161GMXSQZHKRM&pd_rd_wg=7gSsw&pd_rd_r=c4bda15e-8dcb-46bb-9c77-029f50ad0e8e&s=automotive&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw

    Brilliant boat! Love the videos, My wife and I have recently purchased a colvic sea rover and we found out that it is 'SR1' the very 1st one built in 1967. We currently have it moored in Aberystwyth and are looking forward to our adventures. Lois & Al

      Wow the very 1st one thats great, what a privilege to own her. We looked seriously at Aberystwyth as its just 12 miles from where we live, but it was about the same money as we pay now, but now we have full tidal access so no worries about how much water we have. The down side is that living where we do, we have a 60 odd mile drive to Neyland, but what makes it for us is the fact that we can get out onto the Cleddau in almost any weather and you can cruise for a week without reaching the sea at all. Hope you will keep us updated on your own adventures.

    According to the manual, I believe the unit should be installed in a fore and aft direction. Also the fuel pump should not be mounted horizontally but diagonally at an angle between 15 to 35 degrees, some people recommend 45 degrees.

    Would a following sea be a potential problem for you exhaust?

    • @newkippertales7524
      @newkippertales7524 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Water trap is an integral part of the system. The outlet element also has an angled pipe to help with that very same problem. So limits the chances but still its not an impossibility. Alternative mounting would have been on the hull side, and while that would have been far easier in fitting and heat protection etc. but there is a much higher risk of water getting in there, after all the boat rocks and rolls all the time so shipping a wave into the system would be a very real possibility. I guess its lesser of the evils as they say, but the approach I have taken seems to be the convention. :-)
