I still don't get the point of emotions. What I want and desire can be measured in objectivity and reality. Saying that "my hopes/dreams don't matter = antithesis of emotion doesn't make sense because emotions can drive that decision (sadness, anxiety, envy, guilt) as well" Subjective experience is very important, but the ability to reflect on the fact our subjective experience isn't indicative of the experiences of others is also equally important. Personally I don't see wise mind as this 50/50 balance between the two but maybe 80/20.

There is no one size fits all therapy. DBT has a high success rate, yes, and it has helped many people, but I think it is quite ridiculous for Linehan to say it works for everyone regardless of the severity of their symptoms, history or circumstances in their life. There isn't any therapy, no matter how beneficial many may find it, that's a panacea. Personally i find DBT very difficult to apply and absolutely hated it. There are other therapies to treat borderline personality disorder and you have to find the fit that's right for you.

You ever heard of "give someone a fish and they'll eat for a day, teach someone to fish and they'll eat for the rest of their lives"? If you have, giving them the fish is the same as giving them the solution to what YOU think THEY need to fix. "Resisting the righting reflex" means to resist giving them the answers of what you think is "right" for them. This fits in with the main goal of motivational interviewing... that the answer to all their problems is inside the person you are talking to. Its your job to use all the tools, principles, and spirit of MI in order to extract the goals and desires of the person from inside them and navigate resistance and ambivalence to help them create their own solutions ("teach them to fish"). The reason MI is important is because motivating people and giving them advice burns you out especially when you see people NOT DOING what you knew they should do! MI is special in this context because it delegates most of the decision making, problem solving, and credit taking to the client or patient. Its quite a rush when you're successful. I hope all of that made sense! Good luck in your MI journey!

Yea dbt good in many many ways. One thing tho is it seems almost cult-ish at times and (not but , AND) I think there are side effects from DVT and unintended consequences. Like the radical acceptance part really how is that different than disassociation and setting boundaries how is that different than trying to have control over thinks. Yes if somebody has any sort of confusion or issues regarding disassociation and or control issues with themselves being the issue or another person around them being the issue then it gets hard to disassociation with radical acceptance and also boundaries with control. So I think there’s some things about DBT that are not good for many people and maybe it’s just being kind of brought to the surface now or (I’m not really sure) I think that’s definitely something that should be explored though.

I graduated from one year DBT counseling and group Therapy today. I’ve had been offended since I was five but at the age of 43 I Received a diagnosis where I was able to go to DBT therapy. I am no longer Constantly offended and now I have skills to exercise not to be offended. And if I do become offended I have skills to get out of it! Acts 24:16. DBT also taught me critical thinking so I can find a place of forgiveness for myself and others! I thank God for this Freedom! And Marsha for her faithfulness to God.

The assumptions of this approach do not allow for any sort of individuality which is the foundation of all theories of human development. I am shocked this is an industry standard for couples therapy. It represents how subjective and ultimately unhelpful much of the field of psychotherapy has become. I’m a 19 year veteran in the field as licensed therapist

Dbt is just a fancy way of saying common sense. I can't believe i wasted 6 months of my life on that bullshit. Whoever created dbt simply took things that are common fucking sense and gave them fancy names. Emotion regulation: just a fancy way of saying calm the fuck down. How do you learn to calm the fuck down? By trying to communicate in a more pleasant way. Wise mind: just a fancy way of saying you can make decisions with some emotion, but also use logic. So, pretty much, make decisions humanly. Thanks. That was fucking enlightening. Then there's "Building mastery", which is just a fancy term for saying "broaden your horizons and challenge yourself because then you'll have a more fulfilling life, you stupid lazy fuck." Then there is the aspect of dbt that says "make goals and figure out how to accomplish them" really...you dont fucking say??!! You mean setting goals like getting through a class and getting a fucking job will make my life better??!!! I never would've guessed!!! Look, psychology is extremely important and helpful. I'm not knocking therapy overall. Get help if you need it, by all means. But, if someone says you need dbt, ignore that shit. There are useless idiots in every profession, unfortunately, and those in psychology who suggest you go through a fucking common sense program and those who teach the common sense program are idiots of psychology. And another thing: i was told to go through dbt (aka common sense training) because i was told i couldn't handle my emotions if i underwent trauma therapy. Call me stupid, but i think a trauma therapist, or any type of therapist for that matter, should know how to deal with a patient's sadness and negative reaction during treatment, instead of passing that job onto someone else and making an extra step and more work for the patient who's already suffering enough. Jesus fucking christ, we got some stupid and useless motherfuckers in this world. Holy shit. And yeah psychology patients, wake up! Therapy is hard! No shit! Nobody fucking said that dealing with your issues would be easy! But if you want to live a better life, you have to go through it! So you have to handle the pain. Life is one big shit sandwich and we all have to take a bite. That's my spiel for today. Fuck dbt. It's just common sense with glitter sprinkled on it, folks. The fact that this "therapy" was created by a person who believes in god just makes the "therapy" all the more laughable. If common sense was going to solve emotional pain, there wouldn't be any more depression or sadness.
