The Rings of Power | Tolkien Explained
I don't think this applies to the "woke" mentality now, it would be hard to write Glorfindel in as such a powerful character noting that he suddenly just dissapears when the fellowship is sent out and shows up at the end of the war against sauron, amazing as he is it would not be good for the flow of the movie as people would wonder where this immense powerful being suddenly went.
Especially since there would be next to no context for Glorfindel. For example, we at least know that Galadriel is the lady of light and bears a ring. We see Elrond fighting against Sauron in the prologue. Glorfindel’s feats were from the First Age, which is basically not covered in LOTR but in supplemental material. So if Glorfindel was in the movie in a somewhat significant part, literally a random blond elf would show up, wipe the Nazgûl, and then just disappear, making a lot of people who don’t know who Glorfindel is go “wait so are all elves this powerful or something? If even a random elf is this powerful why don’t the elf lords just so solo Sauron??”
That was the biggest mistake changing Glorfindel with Arwen
Um, Melkor did not rename himself, the Elves gave hime the name Morgoth (Black Enemy) after witnessing his treachery and dark intent. smh
do the wizards have a clear memory of their lives before appearing in middle earth? they knew saruman was boss and their purpose…
So they took out the greatest elf in history for toxic feminism great
Toxic feminism? The f*ck? Glorfindel does basically nothing in the books. He shows up for like 30 minutes and just gets mentioned a bit after that. Meanwhile, Arwen is literally useless in the books, and just serves as a standard female stock character to drive Aragorn. It makes perfect sense to cut out a character that most of the audience wouldn’t even know to give more agency and context to a character that actually serves an important purpose in the story. Arwen matters to the War, Glorfindel doesn’t.
@yanyanzhang5813 I totally disagree but that's OK. Have you seen the preview for the new animated War of the Rohan movie? If so what are your thoughts?
@ the movie looks good and I am willing to give it a chance.
@yanyanzhang5813 yeah I will give it a chance to but the reviews are kind of mixed so for. The Character Helm Hammerhand is really cool
Bro your description kills😂😂😂 you deserve a like❤️
Their gonna say this is woke lol
Let alone when eowyn kills the witch king by saying I am no man. This movie would have been canceled for being “woke”
@peewee0224 subtle nods to it is fine, but blatantly shoving it in your face isn't.
Question was he able to go back and forth to valor ? Or he was stuck in the body of man forever as Gandalf ?
I think that Glorfindel was actually shown/ listed in the films. However, I do believe the first Elf next to Elrond in the clip you showed would have been a better cast as Glorf. Also, as fantastic as a part Liv Tyler played, I think I can speak for all Tolkien fans when I say we wished Ol’ Glorfnuts was shown intimidating/ driving away the Nazgul in his light form.
I know right. He would have been such an amazing cameo. We all know he was too powerful to join the fellowship
See Melkor really wasn't a bad guy. He just looked around and saw all the other Valar had hot wives and he's like WTF dad! Well I'm just going to be a hater now
Tolkien didn't make a big deal out of it but Tom Bombadil was a registered Middle Earth sex offender...
Thangorodrim: an iconic trio of hollow funnels - unnatural "volcanos" that Morgoth raised to discharge slag from Angband.
and he caused incest. very evil.
I put this together in between lore projects. Let me know if this is something you'd like to see a bit more of!
I like that intelligent Dragons has come to be the norm in modern fantasy.
Couldn't agree more!
as cunning as the raptors of the jp/jw franchise
My favorite Tolkien character by far ❤
That’s practically the reason I did the video!!! Haha hope you enjoy it!
Do you think Glaurung was the most evil dragon? Should I cover the others?
I haven’t heard anyone else talk about Beorn and the Vale in this way and its how I’ve always thought of them - as protectors. He leaves his isolation and becomes the leader that men need. Its such an amazing story. Thank you for this video!
Thank you for the kind words! These comments keep me going! Great to have you here and can't wait to see your thoughts on other videos.
Glorfindel was a badass, nuff said.
☝️ spot on!
You need to do better research, several things were wrong
I appreciate any critiques. I do dive deep when I write out my scripts, but this is a hobby and I can only grant it so much of my time. Feel free to point them out and I will add them to my knowledge for the future. Thanks!
I didn't notice any glaurung mistakes. Care to Elu-cidate?
@@ktiemz 2 that immediately stood out, Glorfindel did not cause the flood or horse-waves outside Riverdale, that was Elrond with a Gandalf assist. The other is that when he died, what was special was how quickly he got a new body, as most elves are reimbodied once their souls are ready. Glorfindel's selfless sacrifice was what strengthened his soul as that is an action that Eru appears to appreciate (see Gandalf's return)

wow new channel with high quality production? new sub. however, Arwen did not only replace Glorfindel in the movie for plot streamlining and female representation purposes, but also as a plot device and reward for the male hero, Aragorn. ps. are you using AI images? there's a lot of artwork i've never seen before. just curious.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I use a mix of AI and original artwork. I had a ton of fear around “fair use” and copyright when I began the channel so my first video is rough in many aspects… It has essentially all AI images and I learned a ton from it. I’ve evolved into mixing film video and stills with artwork and some AI to fill the gaps. Good luck to you!
@@FablesoftheFellowship I look forward to seeing where this channel goes! keep up the good work!
Stick with me. I’ll do my best to deliver. Also, i don’t think ever knew about the “reward” of Arwen lines of thought but I can appreciate the idea!
He killed what is essentially a Fallen Angel, a.k.a a Balrog.
I can see the parallels. Good call out!
Killed a Balrog .Nuff said .
☝️This! Couldn’t agree more!
Are there any other Elves that match or surpass Glorfindel in your eyes? Let us know!
King Turgon, I think.
Elu Thingol was tall, mighty and wise, despite his haughtiness. I don't think the elder king looks favorably on haughtiness though...
@@thearnorianruby4681 Turgon certainly was admirable. He knew to trust in wisdom beyond his understanding. But could he slay a balrog??...
@@ktiemz I think he killed Gothmog, but I may be wrong. Want me to get back to you on it tomorrow?
@@thearnorianruby4681 all good! Ecthelion of the Fountain slew Gothmog. It is still remembered where I live
Glorfindel was such a BA character
Couldn’t agree more!
Beorn is another one of those interesting characters that point to a whole world of magic and mysteries that never get directly mentioned in Tolkiens work.
I agree! We all know the "soft" magic aspect of Tolkien's lore and as much as I would love a fleshed out system, it's fun to speculate!
Do you think Beorn would have been on par with a Balrog? Or am I way off?
I think that would be a reach. 😅 I feel like Beorn would be squished pretty quickly.
That rendition got you a Sub 😎 🧊🧊 👦
Let’s go!! I appreciate you. Everyone else is giving the opposite impression 😅
One thing that might explain Sauron and Saruman coming from Aule's stable so to speak is that, aside from Melkor himself, Aule is the only one of the Valar known to have _significantly_ erred according to what he was supposed to have done. Namely, he made the Dwarves in secret, knowing full well the plans of Eru in terms of the Firstborn (the Elves) and Men that followed. Of course, Eru discovered this and may not have been pleased initially, hence Aule offered to destroy the Dwarves before Eru forgave him and gave them true life, but it perhaps hints to something in Tolkien's writing about the pridefulness that comes from crafting things of power. Which brings us naturally to Sauron, as perhaps the second (or third, depending on where you put Feanor) most powerful crafter of things after Aule, and to a lesser degree Saruman. The latter was also a forger of magical rings, although far less powerful than the ones Sauron and Celebrimbor forged. Perhaps the urge to craft is but one step away from the desire to control and dominate...as opposed to I imagine the more free and libertarian vibe of someone like Yavanna.
Such a great breakdown and analysis, overall. Others have said something similar but you’ve added even more detail and it seems you’re on to something! Thank you !
Excellent video overall, thank you! Only a couple of points to clarify: - 1. _Technically_ all the Valar set foot on (early) Middle Earth, as their first home was on the Isle of Almaren in the Great Lake in the first version of Middle Earth (during the time of the Lamps) before it was remade. It was only after this was destroyed by Melkor that the Valar moved to Valinor on Aman. 2. Melkor (meaning "the Mighty One" or perhaps more accurately "He Who Arises in Might") never to my knowledge called _himself_ "Morgoth". "Morgoth" was a name given to him by Fëanor when Melkor destroyed the Trees of Valinaor, killed his father and took the Silmarils, meaning "Dark Enemy" or "Black Foe" and was was essentially a curse. He was also known as Morgoth Bauglir, which added the word for Tyrant/Oppressor onto an already foul name.
Thank you so much for the kind words and critiques! I am torn over Almaren = Middle Earth. Imo, as that was an entirely different piece of land before being reshaped, they are different places entirely. But I do get the other side as well. Either way, I love the discussion! Thank you
Nice work!
Thank you Jared! I appreciate it!
So, from what I’ve gathered from a lot of art and imagery of Arda is that it is a flat plane right? So a creature like Ungoliant must have come into Arda from above it. Maybe creatures came from underneath as well? As there were no powers to control them like there was for creatures like Ungoliant, these creatures were able to reproduce and spread rapidly covering the entire underside of Arda. Here, they eat tunnels through the stone over millennia trying to make their way up towards where the life essence is strongest, on the surface.
You may have something here! I like the imagery you're giving me too. Thank you!
I was recently thinking about this...because how Tolkien wrote about them made me curious and i can imagine it can be horryfing to be down there. So yeah there should be a fananimation about this fleeing and fighting in the depths of Arda...maybe an offspring of Ungoliant could be there too, an offspring who is much more terrible than Shelob. The fananimation would be like a sick horror video...maybe i will work on something like this in the future. I always missed fananimations about Silmarilion and Lotr...i mean just imagine an animation about the alliance of Melkor and Ungoliant, their escape and their fight
I'm telling you what, if I had any animation ability, this would be up there on what I might create. I can see it if I close my eyes, almost like an anime style chase but of course keeping it Tolkien inspired. This is great... Thank you!
I smell ChatGBT influence in this script
How dare you, sir! That’s an insult to AI everywhere. I appreciate all critiques, though! Good luck to you!
@@FablesoftheFellowship wasn't a critique! If you didn't use it, then it's a compliment 😉

That rap was like a bad local furniture store commercial in 1992... i think i'm out lol
Is it weird that this is exactly what I was going for? You may not want the furniture but you will always remember the jingle…
@@FablesoftheFellowship hahahaha well - fair enough lol touche
Thanks for the good laugh, Hex! Good luck to you, I hope to see you in the future comments as well!
I view this as the Balrog flying up through what is essentially a hollow earth to escape the clutches of the nameless things. Gandalf grabs him and has to periodically fight to stay on.
This may be the case but as I said in another comment, was it just 10 days of running and grasping and fighting each other?
"pursued him, clutching at his heel" sounds like the Balrog was booking it out of there as fast as he could with Gandalf literally hanging onto him for dear life. The team up idea is cool but I think is reading too much out of the few words we have, which are simple but clear.
I actually agree with you mostly, I just love the imagery more than anything. However, it was 10 days… it was just a chase/hold on for dear life for 10 days? Maybe because they are demi-gods the 10 days is more like an hour to you and me?
I picture what under zeds shack in pulp fiction where Marcellus Wallace and butch team up
😅😳
Tolkien to the end of his life refused to explain much about Tom. He said "Even in a fantasy world, some things must remain a mystery".
Exactly this! Thank you Brian!
Varda created the stars after the shaping of Arda, not before. They were created after the toppling of Illuin and Ormal to give some light for the awakening of the elves
Thank you for the correction. I’ll make sure to this information for any future videos about it!
Share your thoughts!! Does the “rap” work? 😂 Did Gandalf and Durin’s Bane team up against the Nameless Things?
It for sure sounds like something out of a Lovecraft story. And that make sense, Lovecraft's works were popular by the time Tolkien wrote LOTR.
Great callout and spot on @youbiv!
So the best explanation is that he is an anomaly that was born in the creation of the world and does not fit into any category.
Yep! That is probably the likely but least “fun” answer.
Sauron and saruman served Aule, then Gandelf served Manwe
Spot on! Any thoughts as to why Sauron and Saruman lost their ways and became evil?
@@FablesoftheFellowship sauron was so obsessed with ordering and thought that only he could do it and well became power hungry and was convinced by Melkor to join him in his conquest of Arda . Saruman was power hungry wishing he could achieve the same power as Sauron and even attempted to make his own ring of power
Great assessment! Thank you for sharing!
@@FablesoftheFellowship thank I have read the silmarilion
That’s great! Definitely a little heavier/intricate than the Hobbit 😅
Just to share, I made representations of 4 blades from your video here during one of my plays of Skyrim: 1. A Glass Dagger for Sting 2. A Nordic sword for Orcrist 3. An Iron Greatsword for Glamdring 4. A Dragonbone Greatsword for Narsil/Anduril I used anti-daedra and anti-undead enchantments to work around the warning ones from Tolkien's work
This is the kind of cross platform lore that I LOVE. I mean, if you carried those blades with you in-game, it was assured you would win! Thank you so much for the comment!
