Why is Swazilands clothing industry thriving?

My shein clothes don't shrink. all the other retailers including cotton on that charges 400 rand a shirt at this point, does. Local retailers buy shit anyway and sell it at 300% markups and guess what? it comes from china and there's a good chance the rights violations also are applicable from some of these suppliers anyway. I don't think Either of these companies give less of a shit about the tax cause they know how cheap cost is for the product and will continue their operations. I will continue buying it cause I feel like the quality is just far superior for the pricing compared to what is available in the malls apart from big brand names around South Africa. Alot of people are very fucking lost in terms of where all our clothes come from. It all mostly comes from Asia at dirt cheap bulk prices, logos get slapped on and prints made and boom a shirt with a 15 rand cost and a 26 rand print is sold for R350. Only a fool suffers a fool.

This is a little bit of a naive take on a complex issue. Firstly tax avoidance is perfectly legal, and arguably in the SA context a moral imperative. SA corporates have entire tax departments dedicated to reducing their tax bill - the recent case between Coronation and SARS leaps to mind. Given the levels of household debt in this country it's hardly surprising that people leap at good value. It ultimately boils down to economic stagnation for 15 years which has eroded the purchasing powe of the middle class.

Most shops sell stuff imported from China, and then add a ridiculous markup onto it. Shein and Temu just lets you skip the middle man. My girlfriend wears absolutely stunning outfits on the daily that look expensive AF, have better quality than a lot of local stuff, while costing less than half of the price

People will always vote with their wallets. BUT if they were cheap but took months and were unreliable people would buy local. The point is theyre sometimes up to a quarter of the price for clothes for example, and they can ship it to you in 2 weeks?? They're cheaper and more convenient. So the point is their service and products a better value for money...

This is pure disgusting BS . Its either they paid you or you own a shop that you ordered from Shein all along just like takealot and double the price here in SA. Whats wrong if Shein its bigger than Nike or Reebok? . Ordinary people been ordering on Shein for years, it just got famous here as people are adapting to the internet and financial burden imposed by the same corporations you are pushing propaganda for. This is utter bulsh#@!. If our businesses were competitive this would not be a problem. As to the "toxic" materials used, we did a study and ALL the manufacturers use the same basic raw ingredients. Yes even the big brand names (who all manufacture in the Asiatics). The same factories that produce your niche brands that charge you double. But where is this narritive coming from? If you keep your eye on international politics you will note that the West and Europe is in a major tiff with China. China is a huge threat to the big industries in the west. Mainly because most if not all has outsourced their manufacturing capabilities to China. Now China wants to supply direct and cut out the middleman, hence the huge drop in pricing. So its no "DUMPING" goods on our economies and the only complainers are the brand owners funding this insane narrative of "beware of Chinese goods". Like all good things - our access to affordable goods are in danger of being blocked by the big corporate machine. Look I am all for nice brands, but is the price really justified? I think not.

Stef, I hear what you are saying, but this issues boils back to the Gov. With the insane taxes on everything, local business have to charge R1000+ ( for a hoody, as an example). So if I have to choose between buying something for R1000 or R300 (even if the quality is not as great) I would rather buy 2 of the R300 option, and have change The issue is at Gov's door step, not the big scary overseas companies. (just my opinion)

People are sick of being taken for a ride. Our local businesses has homegrown advantage but they would rather rip off a customer base than to build a loyal lasting base to profit of. Everyone chasing instant success and no longer want to put in the work to deliver good affordable quality products. So we get to choose where we spend our money. I mean we have worked for it and paid taxes while doing so.

This is not accurate infrormation. Local suppliers do not pay import tariffs. It's poor people (who need help) that are buying TEMU and SHEIN.

Local retailers also buy from china these cheap materials. They also have less sense of fashion here in SA. Shein came and addressed the aesthetic.

This is not sympathy on the side of the consumer. Rather on the side of a disconnected business sentiment with the reality of a consumer base it does not understand.

I don't buy from these platforms, they are flooding our market with cheap disposable garbage made using child and slave labour, nobody can compete with China, as we have to pay workers a fair and living wage. Most of the stuff you buy on there can only be used once then it will break any way

I think when it comes to 20% and 45% Tax Fee, the optimal percent I would go for as well is the minimum ,in this case 20% . Since I have a choice to choose the lowest 😂. I think they are not cheating, its just business. if its the loophole then I guess SARS should always stick to 45% or the highest percentage without considering choices then it will be fair. The retailers in South Africa are also expensive, there is also an issue with verifying our retailers as well, who verifies if our retailers are not selling non-toxic stuff? I guess is another thing to compare and have a measure or test to compare if Temu or Shein vs our retailers are not the same, I am sure we will find more similarities difference may only be prices which one will always go with the lowest

For the people that support Shein and Temu, dont complain about not having job creation in SA, i know a few people that started local manufacturing factories in SA, unfortunately they dont get the support needed by the public to grow their businesses and create job opportunities for more people. Yes businesses do tend to import alot of products from china but they do buy better quality for their stores. I would rather support a local business regardless if their products are imported, so that we can grow our country and still provide jobs instead of people lossing their incomes as businesses are closing their doors rapidly in SA.

Takealot sells the exact same goods as Temu except at 10X more profit and at buying it at half the cost because they buy from bulk from China. If you claim Temu sellls toxic items then Takealot sells toxic items as Takealot sellers all get the items from China. Takealot always makes losses even before Temu became popular. If they make a loss they do not have to pay tax as they make no profit. South Africa does not produce goods ourselves. Local SA businesses are all middlemen who import goods from China, just do not want competition Everyone buying from Temu pay customs, so much so that Temu's Buffalo partner has the highest tax compliance rate and as a result get special express treatment at the airport.
