66’ Thunderbird - Replacing solenoid & ignition switch
My battery was dying every day, and I figured out my radio was staying on even when I’d turn the car off and when the keys came out. I asked many people on forums and they said unless my radio was direct wired, it shouldn’t do that. So I started with the solenoid because it seemed like an easier replacement. That failed to fix it but hey new parts. So I got under the dash and removed the switch as well as a light bulb for the ignition. Hope i described things well enough to help someone doing the same thing I did. Maybe you won’t struggle like me 😂

66 Thunderbird - Brakes are back to square 1
มุมมอง 312 ปีที่แล้ว
So after a lot of trial and error from learning the hard way, I managed to get right back to where I was before I started adjusting that rod from the brake booster. The pedal is back to 90% air, and 10% brakes. That last 10% of the pedal push has to be pushed hard, too. I’m just going to take it to a mechanic who does a lot of classic work. Also, watch the last video In this clip and tell me if...

66’ Thunderbird - New Brake Light Plastics, Bulbs, and more

Ordered new plastics for the rear end and LED bulbs as well. I made a lot of mistakes in this video so learn from mine lol. I had bulb issues, parts issues, and me being dumb ordering wrong parts. So pay heed! Idk why this one was 20 minutes long. Sorry if i drug it out, but i wanted to share everything on my mind. Tell me what y’all think about going LED, and the resistor issue that i hear abo...
66’ Thunderbird - Installing Fuel Pump, Water Pump, Radiator, Coolant Tank & more
มุมมอง 1542 ปีที่แล้ว
Got the whole coolant system redone and going back in. Everything got refurbished, rather than replaced. The alternator got refurbished, and i replaced the regulator for it. I found out i already had an electric Ignition system, so that was cool to find out after new spark plugs, wires, and a coil pack (the MSD coil pack didn’t get featured this video but is on now). I put new shocks and rubber...
66 Thunderbird - Removing Water Pump, Alternator, Shocks, & more
มุมมอง 832 ปีที่แล้ว
I’m slowing removing the simple things and removing rust, painting, and repeating. The water pump has been sent off to Houston to be refurbished. The Alternator has been refurbished. And today I’m picking up the coolant tank and radiator that’s been refurbished as well. Please help me out there towards the end, i have a couple questions on how to start removing that harmonic balancer and the st...
66’ Thunderbird - Pulling fan blade, radiator, coolant tank & more
มุมมอง 2002 ปีที่แล้ว
For whatever reason, when i ran my AC the bird decided to die on me. I got pulled home by Dad and we saw there wasn’t any gas in my in-line filter. We poured some in the carburetor and it ran briefly, leading me to believe my fuel pump was out! So this process of trying to get hands on the fuel pumps (2) bolts has turned into a major overhaul of my coolant system! But i still have things to rem...

The gauges at night look great, wanted to show just how good though! I’ve discovered more problems to address with the steering column. The PRINDL won’t light up outside of PARK, or when the wheel gets moved to the right during PARK. Hopefully it’s a loose connection i can unplug and plug back in…..probably not though lol Also my blinker doesn’t click continuously when engaged. It also won’t cl...
66’ Thunderbird - Headlight Switch & Gauge Bulbs (Concluded)
มุมมอง 5732 ปีที่แล้ว
The $28 switch from NAPA was janky and and failure. I bought the $62 switch off of Mac’s Auto and it was a success. The Gauges look great with the new LED’s installed. I hope to replace the speedometer, odometer, radio, ignition, and the headlight switch bulbs as well. My next video will be the turn signal indicator light bulb replacement.
66’ Thunderbird - Greasing Ball Joints, Oil Change, Headlight Switch & Gauge Bulb Replacement
มุมมอง 3672 ปีที่แล้ว
Ball Joints are busted and my friend just said save up for new control arms. Hope that grease helps a bit until then. I changed the oil with NAPA’s 30 weight oil by Valvoline, and used their Gold filter as well. I used 5 quarts, hope that’s enough. I read on forums it was 1qt for the filter & 4qt for the pan. I removed the Headlight Switch from the dash as well as the Bulbs from all 4 Gauges.
My 1966 Ford Thunderbird - First Look
มุมมอง 1.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I recently bought a 1966 Thunderbird with a 390FE V8 motor and 97,000 miles on it. Bought it from original owner out of Waxahachie, Tx. The only rust on her is underneath in places like the leaf springs or the rear end, but the body is flawless damn near. Planning to fix exhaust leak and replace the shocks soon. Any other comments or suggestions are welcome!

    Dude thats so cool. I was looking for a special cluster for a custom build for my son and I was thinking this old ford third had a cool set of gauges and man this is *&$@ing cool. Now I just have to buy 1 and see how I can round off the right corner cuz when you look at these on eBay the right side is a straight down cut and the left side is rounded. Anyway thanks for the video. 😁

    Hello Ben. I was thinking about your other post about how your engin RPM changed drastically when applying the brakes. This is probably a vacuum leak in the power brake booster. If it's the original one, the internal rubber doesn't seal because of age. Also, when the master cylinder leaks brake fluid out of the back where it attaches to the brake booster, the booster will pull the fluid in and cause internal damage. George B.

    Hello Ben. For yoy saying that you don't know what you are doing, you did a good job replacing that starting solenoid and ignition switch! If you have the 1966 Ford Shop manual, on page 15-20 under Specificatons, there is a listing for light bulbs. Make sure the bulb number you used for the ignition switch ring is a 1895 type. Even though they are 12v bulbs, they may have different brightness, and could be shaped different. George B.

    If your engine rpm’s change when applying brake pedal, you might have a vacuum leak. Time to find out where. FUN. There are several easy ways. Start by disconnecting and plug ports going to everything and plug those, at the manifold. Leave power booster hose attached. Apply bake pedal check engine rpm’s for change. Check the hose for leaks . Change as needed. Use VACUUM HOSE. NOT FUEL HOSE. Good luck. Isolate. .

    I know the feeling. I’m wondering if there is supposed to be something like a pad or gasket between the lens and mounting surface. To keep moisture out and to cushion it. Is there anything like that on yours? I would immediately find a way to repair that crack before it cracks worse. Good luck. Car looks great. Clint in Michigan

    Hello Ben. I enjoyed your video of switching over to LED. Those new lenses look great! If you look closely at that center tail light bird script, you will notice that the "pegs" are tapered. As you tighten the nuts that hold it on, they will "bite" into the metal pegs creating their own threads. But it does make a nice display! Thanks for showing. George B. in Michigan

    Hello Ben. Looks like the car is running good. Has that exhaust noise, but sounds like you have it covered with new manifolds. The area that you power washed, and by the battery is painted the same color as the body of the car. I don't know if you intend on keeping it as original looking as possible. George B. in Michigan

  • @servicetechnician3264

    Hello Ben. You found yourself a beauty! You will probably get many T-Bird lovers giving you some tips. I see Joernone has already chimed in! Check out Nick at Vintage Thunderbird Repair, Alvin at Jamieson's Repair Shop, Gordon Miller's channel, and Pedalbox. I am sure there are more on TH-cam to find. I would inspect the exhaust manifolds carefully with an inspection mirror while it is running so you can find where the exhaust leak is at. These cars have an "exhaust control valve" located on the passenger side where the exhaust meets up with the exhaust manifold. You can sometimes get a leak there, or hear it "rattle". As far as the non-steady idle, it could be time for a carb rebuild, or there could be a vacuum leak. I like what John says about the master cylinder. If you are adding brake fluid and are not seeing any leaks, it is possible that you are loosing fluid from the master cylinder into the brake booster. Fluid can damage the brake booster internal workings, and could be getting sucked into the engine through the vacuum line from the booster to the intake manifold. I hope you post more videos of this nice looking car! George B. in Michigan

    Don’t worry about those timing marks on a harmonic balancer. They are only needed forwhen the car is running and you are checking the mark with a timing light. The three bolts should be holding the belt pulley to harmonic bouncer. The one big bolt holds that assembly to the crankshaft.Good luck moving along. Do you have a shop manual?

    That last thing you grabbed under the hood, is the temperature control valve, operated by vacuum. When you adjust the interior temperature that valve opens or closes for coolant to flow through the heater core.

    Ben, You're moving right along, my friend. I'm happy to see you diving right in there. My favorite saying: "it will bend to my will." You're already making it do the same. Btw...malfunctioning master cylinders can be a very scary thing, especially when you hit the brake. 😁 Considering how much brake fluid was under the car, the engine quitting when it did was good Karma and all that. Ben, Way to go. Those LEDs do look good. I have a set, but not yet installed them. Two days ago I completely finished the undercarriage and I'll soon be starting on the interior. All the parts have already been cleaned, de-rusted primed and painted, so other than squaring away a vacuum line and a few wires that go under the carpet, it'll just be a matter of throwing things back together. It’s says there are 3 comments as of today, but i only see yours here for some odd reason? Anywho, i plan on buying a new cylinder soon. As for the booster, I’d love to find a whole new unit but as i said in the video all I’m finding is refurbishing services. It’s not an issue for me to go that route, I’d just be sad about the downtime for the bird until the boosters redone. Got any advice about approaching that?

    • @joernone
      @joernone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben, Schucks! I wish those missing two comments were there, as I had already sent the info you asked for. Here it is again: This is the place to go to get your booster rebuilt. They've been in the business for like a billion years. They did a great job on mine: boosterdeweyexchange.com/ Call them in advance and they may have an already rebuilt one on the shelf. If so, it'll be a simple exchange. If not, they'll give you instructions on how and where to send them yours and they'll do the rebuild and send it back to you. If I recall correctly, they told me it would take 3-weeks to do mine, but it only took about two. I was very happy about that. As for the master cylinder: I have a brand new, never used one I was going to put on my T-Bird, but opted (via subscriber pressure 😊) to go with a double reservoir instead. Right now it's just sitting on a shelf in the garage collecting dust and you can have it at no cost. Consider it my contribution to your new/old Thunderbird repair project. Sound like a plan? If so, email me at my TH-cam handle @ gmail.com. Lastly, Go here and watch videos 44 thru 49 and you'll learn all about how to do the front end repair work on your T-Bird. th-cam.com/play/PLPagKqeCjne_hKDsIPEQ8N39tUAHVVLB-.html Regards, John

      That’s mighty kind of you, brother. I’ll definitely email you tomorrow about those details for the master cylinder. I’m watching video 65 about the booster tear-down and it looks beyond me lol But I’m hoping i can at least remove mine without taking much of, or any, of the dash. Once interior parts come off they rarely go back on the same way in my experience. But it may not turn out that way. I like to be minimally invasive if possible, mostly out of fear of me breaking irreplaceable things lol God bless you John. Hope you enjoy your holidays

    • @joernone
      @joernone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben, I sorta went overboard on the booster removal process. It can be done from the engine compartment, probably a lot easier and faster, but I always like to go for the gusto. After I disassembled the booster I decided it was best to not take any chances rebuilding it incorrectly. One mistake and the brakes would likely fail and someone might get killed. The thought of that forced me to allow the hands of experts do it for me, so I sent it off to Portland. It's OK to kill myself, but I don't want to take anyone else with me. Lastly, my friend, we've got to build your '66 Thunderbird repair self-confidence. All one needs to tear apart the entire car is a few wrenches, a pair of pliers and a screwdriver as the whole thing consists of only nuts, bolts and screws. That's it...nothing any reasonably intelligent person can't handle. So start thinking: "Let me at this. I can do it!" And as for that "minimally invasive" stuff. Pfffttt! Where's the fun in that? 😁 I'm always here to answer questions. Regards, John

  • @joernone
    @joernone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ben, She's a beauty for sure. Congrats to ya, my friend. Great Christmas gift in my book! Btw...not to worry, zero vacuum tubes are in the car. I do have one recommendation, other than you must fully enjoy driving her around: Ask the original owner if the brake booster and master cylinder are original to the car, thus 55-years old. If so, it's time for them to be replaced. It's not something to be delayed. The '66 T-Bird weighs over 2-tons, meaning brake failure can do great damage to whatever it hits. One other thing: Your exhaust system isn't stock, but if it looks and sounds good, then keep running with it. You're a lucky feller. Contact me whenever you might have a question. I'm always available. Regards, John

      Thanks for the feedback buddy. It’s already brought me a hundred smiles in the past couple weeks. I recently had to fill the master cylinder backup with fluid. So i know it’s time. That exhaust leak has to be fixed soon, as well. After that it’ll be shocks, but hopefully the springs are still spry. I want to replace all the rubber suspension parts i can. I’ll tackle what i can on my own, as i want to avoid mechanics’ labor fees. Im glad to hear from you so fast and hope you’re doing well up there. If you’re ever near Dallas, give me a heads up!
