    But that membrane though... .4 micron? Where does one go to find these materials so as to make a DIY system?

      zero discharge = its non rechargeable equipment which would be disposable upon reaching its limits. i.e mixed bed non regenerate-able.

    • @NZESPK

      depends on feed water. usually 50% for the below 10,000 ppm TDS and the lower product percentage if TDS more than 10,000 ppm..

    The comments about softeners are misleading and erroneous. My softener uses 2 cylinders which use salt only in cleaning. One cylinder is cleaned by softened water provided by the 2nd cylinder so no unsoftened water ever touches the moving parts. Conversely, no salt ever escapes the softener into the drinking water. Reverse Osmosis is 'old hat' because it is so wasteful and expensive to run. It's also complicated to maintain and requires pre-treatment for most water sources, especially for salty water.

      I wish i could only click thumbs up on the first part of your comment. RO is FANTASTIC for brewing beer. Part of the brew day is adding salts to RO to modify the chemistry of the water for better balance of flavors weather the beer needs to be malt forward, hop forward, or balanced.

    First of all I don't have a problem with salt, I have a well and my problem is chloroform, would this system help clear that, and could I hook it up to mywell tank in the cellar?

    Don't forget to mention how much membranes are and how fast they will foul out if iron and calcium are not filtered before hitting the RO system.

  • @gregsimonson4312
    @gregsimonson4312 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Water softeners only use salt to neutralize the negatively charged beads in the system, to purge contaminants into the drain side during cleaning cycle, system then purges with water to clean salt out of system to get it ready for another 3000 gallon cycle, or whatever the program is set at. No salt ever gets into your drinking water.

    • @jakejones5736
      @jakejones5736 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      "No salt ever gets into your drinking water." For what it's worth, I drank water from a water softening system and nearly threw up! I took a sip from the tap, and it had just enough salt in it to cause me to immediately spit it out.

    • @fired71
      @fired71 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jake Jones If you felt the taste of salt in the water from the water softener then it could be due to the following reasons:1. It could have been washing itself at the time that you decided to drink some water in which case some salt could have escaped into your home. (this is likely due to a power outage which could mess with the timer that is on the system. This is why if there is some type of power outage that lasts for an hour or more, the water softener must be re-programed)2. The water softener is using more salt than it should and a technician can lower its consumption enough to where the system can clean itself and further prevent it from entering your home. There could be other reasons but only a technician would be able to further troubleshoot the system. Cheers.

      Salt is necessary for human health. but we must maintain its quantity as per WHO recommendation. continues taking free of salt water could damage our organs.

    softener may add sodium (Na) but does not add "salt" (NaCl) also a salt is the combination of an acid and a base the result is a salt, there are many salts. This info is biased and incorrect..... my opinion lol
