Touring by ebike around Ireland, Scotland and beyond - lessons I've learned from 10,000k, of cycle touring & wild camping including that all important 'how do you keep the battery charged' I've bikepacked Scotlands Islands and Highlands the entire Irish coast line including the Wild Atlantic Way and Eurovelo 1 in Ireland to as well as a 2000km cycle tour of northern Spain & the Basque country
eBiking Puente Viesgo to Ampuera - 21st day cycle touring Spain
This would have been a modest 63km cycle across Cantabria were it not for the state of my brakes which had escalated to a ‘hmmm the pads really are wearing out’. Normally I’d get far over 2000km from a set of brake pads but this Spain trip has not been normal as Ive now been up and down the equivalent height of Everest almost 6 times in 3 weeks. And apart from the meters of climbing a lot of that has been on rough roads with tight bends and quite often crazy 20%, 30% and even one thankfully brief 40% incline. You come down those with your brakes on.
They hadn’t stopped working but they were making the sort of noises that said all was not well. Initially today was fine, a long stretch of relatively flat cycling by a river and then motorway. The initial climb into the hills was also fine, nothing too ridiculous slope wise.
However after Entrambasaguas there was a steeper climb on rough roads into the hills (and another LGD encounter) leading to a very steep descent into a valley. The very steep descents in the older rural roads frequently feature a road surface which is parallel bars of concrete running across the road. I presume this is to provide traction in winter or heavy rain but it doesn’t improve the experience of cycling them.
Having come down I stopped for a coffee in Solorzano and checked the intended route ahead. Sure enough there was what looked like another of those descents do I decided to divert onto a main road, the CA 267 which although it climbed higher then made the descent via s-bends over a longer distance.
In fact this was another of these main roads withalmost no traffic on it, it wasn’t until I was back on my intended route and approaching Ampuero that the traffic picked up to occasionally unpleasant levels. But I got there confident my brakes would still function tomorrow on that all important final 52km to the ferry at Bilbao

Map at cycle.travel/map/journey/575262
Is this case I’ve linked to the original intended route as my diversion was only because of my brakes plus it would be very easy to reproduce from the map itself as its on a major road.

Cycling Cabrales to Puente Viesgo via multiple closed roads - day 20 ebike tour of Spain
มุมมอง 7712 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Today things went wrong in the form of closed roads and not once but four times. As I was already doing an ambitious 101km with 1600m of ascent and it was seriously warm this was a bit of a challenge by the time I got to my hotel 120 sweaty km later. The first closed roads was in the deep gorge running east from Arenas, as I’d said in day 19 there were signs but I hadn’t really paid attention t...

And as it was the route had more than enough spectacular mountains & my first close up encounter with goats. The initial route is on the main road but with a steep left turn up single track mountain roads and spectacular views as I negotia...

I’d thought this was going to be a getting from A to B day with little of interest until I hit the coast and initially it was the standard trying to avigate out of the city & then rural edges with big houses and bigger dogs. But it turned out there was a very pretty hill pass on the route above Figares where interestingly enough there was a Guardia Civil check point I suspect looking for helmet...
Review Bafang 250w ebike - the Conor Bali for touring?
มุมมอง 37314 วันที่ผ่านมา
A look at the Bafang 250w Conor Bali ebike to answer whether it's suitable for cycle touring. In brief if funds are limited it does offer a cheap ebike touring choice even if rear hub motors and the last of cross bar are not ideal. I'd rented this ebike over 5 days and my riding included a 65km and 60km rise around the volcanos of Lanzarote so plenty of steep ascents. My other eBike for touring...

Pola de Somiedo to Oviedo on day 17 of my ebike tour of northern Spain This I knew would be another big mountain day, starting with a fast 10km down hill from Pola but then with a long steep climb for another 10km to get me back to 1340m. This far into the trip without any rest days my legs are feeling it so I’d decided to use sport assist on that 10km ascent, using 45% of a battery in doing so...

Day 16 was a big 93km diversion south to get to one of the national parks in the mountains. irst thing this morning was cycling across the dodgest bridge yet, a narrow path and low railing along with rain & wind had me hoping no one would be coming the other way. It’s a motorway on the other side of the fence so lots of big trucks at speed just a meter away to add to the ‘I’m about to die’ adrenaline kick. The weather stayed miserable for about 45km to Navia which is about the maximum...

Great video and commentary by the way, thanks.
Hi, what tyres do you find best! Thanks.
Great vids. Haven’t done any touring yet, just commuting. First thing I did was buy a fast charger for touring, then bought a second 500watt battery off eBay €130. Could be risky but seems ok and has decent range.
That’s certainly a very good price for that wh
Nice. Just browsing through your vids. Plenty of interest. Planning to do the royal canal/ old rail trail soon.
Thanks for the encouragement
Those cycle tracks at the start looked good, wish we had a few more in the UK. On another note and you may have said so already but do you take a spare battery?
Yes I’ve a 2nd 500whr. TBH I probably could have done all these days without it but day 20 with its 4 diversions and 120km might have exhausted a single battery and it’s nice to turn up the assist late in the day.
Great local tales.😊😊
Another great video thanks
much prefair to watch real time quick version can wreck a fellas eyes, looks like a super tour tho
Would you watch a 4-6 hour video though?
Also, the bags within bags can be a pain when youre looking for something you can't find. So its good to make a list of whats where or have coloured bags like yourself and making the habit of keeping things in the same coloured bag
Yes I did ent choose them that way but the different colours have been very useful
Wow!❤
04:30 There are actually some 200 bears in Asturias.
Yes I’m unfortunately unclear there, in referring to this specific part, two videos back when I’m in Somideo I talk about the bears there
Re. charging in cafes and B&Bs is it better to ask permission or seek forgiveness.
With B&Bs I’d certainly consider it part of what you’re paying for the room as much as charging your phone would be. Cafes I think if you’re spending 10 euro+ then 10c of electricity isn’t important but if it’s somewhere like Spain where a coffee might only be 1.50 then it’s different
Going to do that come the summer.
Great video. Have you used an electric hook up (eg as used by caravans),at a campsite for charging and did it work OK?
I haven’t - I did get a very short one for my tour of Scotland but in every case I was able to charge elsewhere so didn’t need an electric pitch. One issue with them is with the very short ones you couldn’t use them I rain without putting the tent onto the hookup plus you are probably going to have to stay with it as it charges if like me you have to remove the battery to charge
Consider a small bar end mirror, priceless.
I bought one of these in 2021. My only regret was not to have opted for the E14 Rolhoff variant as it has a very wide range of gears, ideal for hills. The Enviolo hub works fine but not great on hills so I find I have to compensate by shifting up through the assist levels more often than I would like, but then it is a heavy bike. that said, it's very comfortable thanks to the rear suspension.
What about a trailer set up with solor panel to charge battery save allthe bags .
The bags are easier when it comes to getting on or off a train and with obstacles when you are off road or trying to get the bike to a wild camping spot. But there are some people who tour with a trailer and panels setup although as I live on the Atlantic I think a lot of my routes would be tricky due to wind. Check my battery video in the great playlist and in particular the comments under it
Hope our paths cross someday! I’m starting easy in spring, looking at France EV4 and EV 1 Maybe Saint Malo - San Sebastián. Looking for easy flat paths, charging stations and a mixture of light camping and credit carding.
Ah I may well be doing the reverse route from late May - in comparison with this Spanish tour it’s very flat indeed (there were 5 by 1400m or higher passes in Spain - I think 300m is the high point on that route
@@Ebiketouringlife I’ll keep an eye out. I’m not sure when I will start, and whether I will go north south or reverse, still looking into that in terms of e-bike transportation.
@VistasdelMar2008 I used the ferry to Bilbao, was thinking south to north because it’s still pretty cold in northern France in May so getting there at the end of the trip might be better even if it is all uphill 🤣
@@Ebiketouringlife Makes sense. Given the very relaxing elevation profile of that route, probably the most important is weather. I have heard that headwinds can be a bit of a factor, less so on ebikes but it is something I need to think about. My first plan is consider to cover the hardest part of getting to the start in the north and then cycle back into Spain as I have more options to get home. But I am looking at going north to the EV4 and then crossing into Portsmouth to visit friends on the Isle of Wight, and then back by Ship to Santander from where I can probably cycle to Galicia or just take a bus. The route is more or less set, just not the logistics!
Current info suggests that late May / June the prevailing winds will likely be south to north. That would probably put me starting in San Sebastián and riding north on the EV1 either to Roscoff or further north via Velomaritime EV4 I think, up to Cherbourg or Le Havre to cross over to Portsmouth or Plymouth. Looks flat enough and a kinder way to start my EuroVelo lifestyle :-)
RIBA DE Sella (Say ya). In Spanish the LL is considered a “y” “ja” sound. Like the ñ it is a separate letter.
Thanks and I really should have known that from pollo and tortilla! Good illustration also of why I’m always telling viewers to read the comments
I often travel from Limerick to Galway and haven't noticed any places for bicycles like this, apparently they exist)
Most often it’s the very back of the rearmost carriage, look for the bike logo on the door which indicates it

Thanks, you made it really easy. Cleared doubts that I had & now I'm good to go. Dublin to Cork!
@@psingh9435 glad you found it useful
E-bikes aren't allowed on public transport anymore. There are seriously inadequate means for safely securing E-bikes around Dublin, let alone the rest of the country.
@@skateboardingjesus4006 there’s a ban on e-scooters due to the number of battery fires because of lack of import controls but not e-bikes
Looks like an absolutely fabulous ride.
Thank you for the info. When you sign up for one of the Velib temporary pass, let's say the 24hr pass Classic 5€, do you have 30 minutes included and get charged beyond that time? Or do you need to return you bike within the 30 minutes to avoid charges? I am not clear how the timing works. Please let me know if possible. Happy riding!
You’ve 30 minutes from when you unlock it to get it to another station and lock it otherwise your charged a euro extra per 30 minutes. But you can drop off one bike and take another straight away
@@Ebiketouringlife Thank you for the reply. So it is designed for short trip use which does make sense.
Great video follow up on your Royal Canal trip. Looking forward to the final section as far as St Mullins. Do you mind me asking what make/model tent is that? It looks great
MER Hubba NX1 - I’ve a review of it in the gear playlist
“O vi eh do” Remember ever letter is pronounced in Spanish. :-). Saying Hola, is fine, if you are coming up to people who don’t see you trying to pass, a gentle “con permiso” is also considered polite.
Great video! I’m thinking about packing my e-bike and trying out this greenway. I really appreciate being able to hear your reflections on biking in this specific video. It seems that as you are coming closer to the end of making the final edits you are more aware of just how much there is to say about the why rather than just the where. Thanks for this.
Thanks and if you’ve an ebike I’d do the trip at least as far as the pass as the roads are quiet enough after the greenway and it’s spectacular up there. That whole descent from Pola de Somiedo to the end of the greenway is possibly one of the best bits of cycling I’ve ever experienced
@@Ebiketouringlife Not sure my Tenways CGO 600 can handle that climb (single speed Gates Carbon Belt drive), but I will try to find an elevation profile for it in Cycle.travel or Komoot to see how daunting it is!
The amount of miles you put in on the bike ,would it be a good idea to carry 1 set of brake pads as only a couple of ounces and a ten minute job. rather than having the anxiety on downhill sections. I love what you do. You are a great inspiration for me this summer to tour. I like the information you give on train boarding with bikes. Safe travels my friend.
My mechanical skills are very limited in part because I’ve very little focused near vision so fiddling around with small parts is a challenge. However yes I was caught out on this trip as I was used to brakes lasting well over 2500km and didn’t anticipate the greater wear from steep hair pin descents so I think I’m going to have to teach myself to swap out pads. BTW in general I’m against the idea that you have to be good at maintenance before touring as it would put people off but it’s certainly a very useful set of skills if you want to stay on the road
Sometimes pads just need a little sand paper and water after muddy tracks. Weighs nothing to bring.
you should use clipless pedals.
love your videos Andrew look forward to your 25 videos stay safe.
I have travelled the Renfe Cercanias or Feve Narrow Gauge from Ferrol to Oviedo which stops at Canero. Trains are twice a day, I believe, in both directions. I am almost sure that bicycles are allowed for free. There is either a designated carriage or they can be left elsewhere, as long as doors are not being blocked or other passengers are being inconvenienced. If part of the route is closed for maintenance, perhaps the replacement bus is unable to carry bicycles. You cannot buy tickets online for this narrow-gauge route, nor the one from Oviedo to Santander. You buy from the machine or ticket office, if available, or onboard from the conductor.
Thanks very much, that saves much searching on my part. One curiosity is the station next from Canero appears to say no bicycles but I wondered if that might be because steps are required to access it
@@EbiketouringlifeMy understanding is that in rebranding the whole line from FEVE to Renfe Cercanias involves huge investment and upgrading. This would involve the stations and platforms along the route but perhaps not those in the very rural areas. It is a lovely slow way to enjoy Northern Spain. The Euskotren - the Basque Train Company is similar in being narrow-gauge as were all those lines now closed - many of which are now Vias Verdes or greenways.
Leixlip to Maynooth section currently been surfaced and looks great - up to now it was very muddy in the wet winter months
Any idea of when that will be finished, the sign they had up in the summer said 26 weeks which would be soonish.
@ first section is complete so it adds a few extra km from Leixlip to half way to Maynooth but 2nd section doesn’t get completed until July /Aug I think
Lovely but where is the cycling infrastructure to enable using a bicycle to cycle to school, work, the library, the shops, to friends ... blah, blah, blah???????
On this channel I’m mostly looking g at touring by eBike so while I mention city infrastructure relatively frequently in that context it’s not my core topic. That said these greenway do also offer excellent commuting routes for those living near them as is observable the last few km into Athlone on the Mullingar to Athlone one
Sad to say, I rarely used my tent, just age caused my degradation. Just the fact that it stayed stretched in the folded position was probably not good for it.
How long did you have it for? With modern materials if there is no exposure to sunlight or heat I’d have thought it should last a couple of decades stored properly

Recharging in churches. Reminds me of a bike packer on TH-cam he kept using grave yards for free water sources. I understand if youre stuck but advertising 70+ thousand viewers of hers to enter grave yards for water just seemed like a bad idea. People already hate cyclists and that wont help our community much. Also its probably not the best water source to drink. I just couldn't see myself doing it and i guess churches are the same for me.
Was a but of a wet one but for Northern Spain i suppose thsts to be expected
Well done man
For those who might not be aware the “Deep Sinking” is located in what was the former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s constituency. In fact Leo’s home was within 100 metres of the access to the canal pathway at Coolmine. It was not uncommon to see Leo and his partner walking the canal at this point so he would be well aware of the historical issues raised in this video. While not condoning parish pump politics what legacy has our former Taoiseach left to his constituency? Absolutely nothing of note! If ever a Taoiseach had an opportunity to do some good in his own area by pushing through this development has sadly gone amiss and the “Deep Sinking” to this day remains a disaster zone.
