DELICIOUS Shoyu Chicken Recipe with Food Network Chef Ippy Aiona
🚨 Get ready for a story ‼️: Back in the day “Hanabata days” when I was growing up at my dad’s Hawaiian plate lunch restaurant (The Kamuela Deli) I would walk from middle school to the restaurant after school daily. I would cut through the forest when the river was dry and would get to the restaurant right around sunset time. The first thing I would do was put my backpack down on the table in the corner that all the old regulars, Barbra, Len and Steve commandeered nightly. Steve would be smoking his marlboro reds, because smoking in restaurants was a normal thing back then as long as you had a superficial divider to have a “non smoking” area. That always made me laugh. I would walk onto the pass and get the plastic Chinese saimin bowl, scoop a big pile of white sticky rice and walk to the hotline. No matter what I was eating I would always pour the shoyu chicken “gravy” all over my rice while Nana Sally Tablit would tell me “ay anako you getting so fat eating that”. It was my go to and ever bite I take brings me right back to the smell of Marlboro, Nana Sally’s tactful comments and the sweet salty flavor of my gravy soaked rice. Now years later I make this dish in my restaurant and I can’t wait for my daughters to create their shoyu chicken memories. Food is life and Memory inducing food is powerful! Skip the canola oil and use avocado if you value your health. Seed oils like canola, sesame seed, grapeseed, peanut, corn oil, etc, are made using industrial chemicals that have residue in the oils. Go look at others TH-camrs who did the research on this.

I had no idea you could pour the vinegar mixture in hot for a “quick pickle”, I always waited for it to cool down. This recipe is almost exactly what I grew up with, including the carrots and peppers, but we also add garlic and don’t put any sugar.
Can I use Hawaiian chili only? Wasn't sure if the other kind chili gives a different flavor that is needed. Can't wait to try this!

Hello ! I just came across your channel, and I am so excited to start following you. My great grandmother was from the Azores. I grew up eating the most delicious food not even realizing they were Portuguese recipes. Now that I’m an adult, I’m trying to reconnect with my Portuguese culture. I remember when I was in college, my beloved Vovo sent me a jar of pickled onions. I loved them so much I the entire jar in one evening and never felt so sick in my life! Thank you for this recipe, it’s so much reminds me of my Vovo. I recall a soup she made with collard greens, chorizo and white beans. Do you know this?
