Hout Bay Ingoma Choir, South Africa

The Hout Bay Ingoma Choir is a South African voice choir performing traditional African choral, with a bit of Western and English gospel and pop thrown in. They were established in 2017 as a celebration of singing talent and an opportunity for social upliftment. All members live in the 'township' of Imizamo yethu in Hout Bay near Cape Town.
They are available for hire at weddings and other private events.

In early 2023 British singer-songwriter Harry Lloyd aka @WaitingforSmith was taking a break in Cape Town, finding inspiration in its landscapes and people to compose some new songs. Just one extra element was needed to perfect the music and experience: vocals from an authentic African choir! Harry was quickly introduced to Ingoma, and we spent a couple of beautiful sessions together in the recording studio, recording backing vocals on four songs, including Let Light In and Small Things

Zamile Gantana was the father of Ingoma. He helped raise us, teaching us about music and performance. He was such a huge inspiration. He passed away in July 2020 after contracting corona virus. This was a special wedding request for a bridal entrance, starting with the Circle of Life opening leading to Can You Feel the Love Tonight? "Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba Sithi uhm ingonyama" Is the powerful opening - here led by Anele. It is Zulu, composed by Lebo M. for the musical, and simply means "Here comes a lion, father. Oh yes it’s a lion!"

We did a selection of songs to welcome the guests to the evening dinner...this is such a powerful song...led by Amava and Yolanda...it's actually quite apocalyptic in meaning, translating as "The World is at the Brink of Catastophe" - perhaps appropriate for the era of global uncertainty we are living in!
