What will a shower restoration cost?
This is a case study of what a shower restoration will cost in Woodland California. This client called us to repair the drywall to in their upstairs bathroom. On first inspection, it looked like a case where the water was traveling down the side of the shower, however, what we found was much more than that. This home was built in 2019, and at some point the PEX elbow to the shower mixer valve s...
What should we do with our dog when doing a remodel?

How to replace a bathroom shut off valve
In this video we show you the difference between a multi-turn and a quarter turn angle stop (shut off valve). It is common in most older homes to have a multi-turn angle stop under the sink. These tend to cause problems for homeowners because they will “freeze” open or sometimes closed. They also tend to be a source of many leaks that cause major damage to vanities or cabinets in the kitchen.

This is what happens when we start a project. The first step is known as demolition, or deconstruction. The TV shows have hyped up “Demo Day,” to the point where people think it’s all about sledge hammers and dust. While that is true sometimes, more often than not, we are being very strategic with how we deconstruct the room. This precision allows us to keep unwanted damage to a minimum. Here w...

Are GFCI required?
When doing a renovation or remodeling project, one thing that is often overlooked is the necessary updating of the electrical system. Often times when the project is specific to one part of the home, we don’t have to update the entire system, but we do need to be sure of a few things, one of those is making sure the proper circuit protection is in place. This includes GFCI and AFCI protection. ...

    I would use a uponor copper stub out on hot and cold side, sweat brass drop ear for spout, and a coated screws not a sheetrock screws. Wondering if you have enough left to cut out press cap on the toilet supply to put escutcheon and a valve, I would use a shark bite cap or a sweat cap. For those who get triggered by shark bite I won't put shark bites in the wall only for testing or a temporary fix.

      @@andrewisland8096 The sharkbites are great for the caps and temporary fixes, like you said, not inside the walls. The reasons for the press fittings, is mainly insurance. No flames inside the finished home. I appreciate the comments and the feedback!

    • @blacklabremodeling

      It depends. The original plan was to not cut the pipe, but unfortunately the brass ring crimped the pipe and caused some flaring so it wouldn’t come off. Have a compact pipe cutter handy just incase you need to cut it, so you can cut as close to the nut as possible.

    A ground fault is not an overload.

    • @blacklabremodeling

      A ground fault is an unintentional connection between an energized conductor and a ground, which results current flow through soil, water, or another conductive material. This can occur due to improper wiring, a faulty appliance, or a surge in voltage. The ground fault will result in a slow, but sustained raise in the current which is what makes electrocution a high risk with ground faults. The GFCI outlet detects this increased current and when working properly cuts off the circuit. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!

    • @JohnDemolition

      @@blacklabremodelingGFCIs only measure imbalance between phase and neutral. If current in - current out is greater that 5mA, it shuts off. This is completely unrelated to overloading.

    • @blacklabremodeling

      @@JohnDemolition You’re correct and I misspoke, thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @blacklabremodeling

      @@JohnDemolition however, a surge in voltage can be caused by plugging in too many things on the circuit (overloading the circuit), putting in a piece of equipment that requires more start up amps than the circuit can handle which will also cause the GFCI outlet to trip. So while a ground fault may not specifically be an overload, they are also often tripped by overloading the circuit they are protecting.

    I have found that LED replacement bulbs have wildly various lives. Probably the same for LED fixtures. It's unfortunate that there can't be LED fixtures with user replaceable bulbs, that the whole fixture needs to be replaced. I'm not sure what that means for contractors.
