Have an app idea? Don't make this classic startup mistake
Nelly, I have an amazing idea for an app, where can I find a developer?
This is a question that I get from non-technical startup founders almost on a daily basis.
One of the biggest and most expensive mistakes that I see entrepreneurs make is wanting to hire a developer to start writing code…way too soon.
In the 10-step development process that I use as a CTO to manage my teams and projects, writing code is actually step number 8!
Which means that there are 7… steps… to take… before even a line of code is written. Doing these 7 steps will make writing the code so much more efficient, so much easier for the developer and if you do these 7 steps, well then, you will also save a ton of time and a ton of money.

You don't need a CTO to build an MVP and get your first customers. A good CEO can sell anything. Not all good CTOs can.

That's exactly why I'm not advertising myself as a would-be CTO even though i'm coming from a technical background. The list of requirements regarding skill and whatnot is potentially infinite and the results are very measurable (vs negotiable or evident later in the future) - this by itself is a challenge, but then it's the reason why we'd join a startup. However, meeting those expectations and filling this role of an 8-armed tech wizard 24/7 likely won't help the early CTO to grow into the role of a later CTO. Getting replaced for "objective reasons" seems far too likely. :/ Consequently, this perspective should be part of the conversation when negotiating a CTO position which will partly be paid in equity. The counterpart will have to build a lot of trust and discuss his/her position on not so happy outcomes as well.

I think the video has content but it focuses primarily on web based startups. My business builds hardware technology so instead of a developer I am certain I need an engineer

What happens to that early developer who built the first version? Especially if they built it for equity only? I’m about to agree to build a product for a startup for equity but I am worried about being just kicked out. I’ve worked as the first technical hire of a startup but once the product was complete they found cheap devs oversees and fired all tech in the us which by that time had grown to 5 members.

@enlightmenttechpts7926 good points except too: 1. mixing CTO and coding work is not a great thing - there's a so-called fractional CTO model (CTO as a service) which can provide in-depth technical guidance for senior developers - the developer can create value in his 100% time, and the company gets his CTO for a fractional price and without giving out equities 2. no, no one should rush into hype and new technologies - especially not startups and SMEs (not in their main and first product development)

Hello. Having worked in robotics since 2008, I believe I have some knowledge worth adding to this video. The first thing I would like to say is thank you for trying to encourage women to get into the tech fields and AI. It is clear that AI is going to be critical for many aspects of society over the next 20 to 30 years, and longer in many different forms. My problem with some of the things that you said was that men put their biases into the AIs that they create. I would suggest that that is a very simplex understanding of AI, the data sets, and the training that goes on to any AI or machine learning device. There's no question that data sets and the way AIs and machine learning systems are designed leaves a large space for unknowns that they're not trained on. Instead of suggesting this is a male versus female thing, I would suggest it's just the fact that we're early in understanding how to design and train AI systems. I had a discussion many years ago with a group of roboticists in 2010 about this very subject and the fact that we need to design wisdom into our robotics and AI systems. The problem is it's easier to state the problem than to fix the problem. I am writing my next book on AI architecture to achieve consciousness and I have quite a big section on ideas behind adding wisdom to our systems. If we don't think about this as we design our systems, it will just be one more problem that machine learning and AI systems will always have. As an engineer and not a neuroscientist, I look at the ways to build things such that they meet all the criteria of the design. I appreciate any discussion on bias, problems, and adding wisdom to our AI friends that will be with us in 10 or 20 years. I can't wait.
