Sailing Momentum & Great Coffee
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 ก.ย. 2020
My passion is both great Coffee and my boat Momentum and I'm driven by my desire to sail her around Tasmania where in 2015, she was built. My inspiration comes from two places, searching for the best coffee beans I could find on my coffee pilgrimage, which took me to the Highlands of Thailand to a village called Ayae. As well as from watching Eric Aanderaa (NBJS channel) onboard his 35 foot Contessa sailing around the Norwegian Sea single handed. It's great to have passion and adventure in your life and at 60 that's not stopping anytime soon.
Making Tasmania at Last - Solo Passage from Bermagui to St Helens
Well I finally did my solo crossing from mainland Australia leaving Bermagui harbour to travel south to Tasmania some 321nm. It wasn't without beautiful sunsets, excitement, strong winds and choppy seas or some stressful moments. But the conditions were perfect and I'd taken enough time to get myself and the boat ready. Weather report looked good and you can only look at it so many times. So I set sail and a blistering sail it was. Just what Momentum likes to kick her heels up and make some solid sea miles.

Momentums 2022 Tasmanian Circumnavigation - JB to Bermagui Phase 2
มุมมอง 2.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is Phase 2 of my move south from Jervis Bay (JB) to Bermagui via Batemans Bay. I had to have a few lay days on this route due to southerly systems that were coming through. Batemans Bay was a new port for me and I learnt a few good lessons about courtesy mooring. I also has some conflicting information about the bar crossing and yachts that drawer 1.9 metres. Lovely days though.
Sailing to Tasmania VDL Phase 1 - Sydney to Jervis Bay

Finally after waiting 2 years due to COVID, I managed to start my solo passage to Tasmania and then onto a Circumnavigation of Van Diemen's Land. All the preparation, planning and gear for the 4.5 months I would be away, was now coming together. You're always thinking about preparation and, 'am I prepared enough', but after nearly two years in the planning, I was sure I was now ready. I think a...
Thinking Beautiful Coffee July 22

What's needed to make a great coffee is simply a great bean. Then all you need a hand grinder and Moka Pot. No looking back.
Monlan coffee comes from the most serene jungle environment
มุมมอง 1203 ปีที่แล้ว
This beautiful region of Northern Thailand in the highlands of Chiang Mai produces some of the most amazing coffee in the world. The pristine mountains with their jungle canopy and fertile soil are ideal environments for the arabica coffee tress to grow.
Great coffee onboard Momentum with a Moka Pot

My sequel, episode two on making great coffee and showing that you don't need expensive espresso equipment, you just great beans. So no excuses, you don't need to drink 'Drano Coffee' anymore, and say good by to instant coffee as well, because life is too short.
Making Beautiful Coffee
มุมมอง 443 ปีที่แล้ว
My other passion after sailing is...beautiful coffee. I'm very fortunate to be able to get coffee beans, both green and roasted direct from a farmer in a small village in the highlands of Northern Thailand called Ayae. I'm passionate about ethically sourcing beans direct from the villagers. I went to Chiang Mai 2 years ago on a coffee pilgrimage to discover and learn the process of growing beau...
Momentum Feb 2021 Trip to Port Stephens
มุมมอง 2673 ปีที่แล้ว
Well I didn't get to Tassi in the end like I'd planned for the last 2 years as COVID19 ruled that trip out for me. Not to worry the NSW coast line has plenty to offer with beautiful inlets to explore. So I head North to Broughton Island and I do it over a number of legs. This Part 1 of the trip is Pittwater to Newcastle.
Sydney Harbour A Day Out Sailing
มุมมอง 1114 ปีที่แล้ว
I had some choirs to do, cleaning mould from around and under my Bimini cover. Followed by a quick battery charge run up the Lane Cove River admiring all the beautiful Jacaranda trees around Hunters Hill this time of the year. This was followed by my usual track under the Harbour Bridge, past the Opera House, while dodging the Sydney Harbour Ferries. I sailed up to Manly crossing the Sydney Hea...
Stormy return trip from Pittwater to Sydney Part B Nov 20
มุมมอง 3794 ปีที่แล้ว
After my passage north to Pittwater a week earlier, the boat had her Raymarine Quantum Radar installed. The HF Radio was checked and tested and then issued with a 100 mile certification. The passage back started out really nice and finished with some challenges. I lost my engine off Long Reef after being hit by the storm, when the sea water inlet for the engine came out of the water due to the ...
Sailing Momentum Sydney to Pittwater Oct 20
มุมมอง 7654 ปีที่แล้ว
An interesting if not bumpy passage from Sydney to Pittwater, with a surreal experience along the way with some magnificent dolphins off Long Reef. Strong headwinds and rolling seas made for a not so comfortable journey. But I was on my way to having my new Raymarine Quantum Radar installed in preparation for longer passages to Tasmania.
Momentums Passage from Tassi To Sydney - April 2017

A short synopsis of my passage sailing Momentum home from the Huon River in Tasmania to Sydney and her new home. A great trip, which was somewhat eventful. I learn a lot about the boat on that trip and 2 years later I’m still learning things about the boat after sailing her nearly every weekend.

Onboard Momentum

This short clip provides a look onboard Momentum my 2015 Adams / Sayer 11.9 timber sloop built in Tasmania by Malcom Oats. Beautiful....
Cheers much appreciated.
Thanks for popping in. Tasmania is full of monsters and frightful seas. I work on the sea every other day out of Dover. Just don't come, it's Hell on Earth. But most important, Don't buy a house down here!! The Bunyips and Dropbeaars will tear your face off. Stay Away!!
Hi, just watching you going into St Helen’s. You had my lady (The Admiral) packing herself with the shallow channel. We touched mud in Lakes Entrance and she tells me now (We draw 2 metres) that St Helen’s is crossed off our agenda when we go around Tassie in ‘24. Really enjoying your videos - thanks! Rod & Lillian
As an extremely recent convert to sailing, on my 40' cruising yacht, I feel very connected to your in this video. I'm currently re-fitting my marine navigation and power systems in order to start circumnavigating Tasmania - the beautiful island that I'm fortunate enough to live on. What a great life - living on and loving our yachts;. :) Great coffee to all. :)
Nice video well done! Just sayin……I love my pacific light windvane it always works.
Well done.
G'day Momentum. Alexandra Bay is a great anchorage. Next time we're there together, have to catch up...Free Spirit
Great passage vid, thanks.
Great video mate. I'm wondering what size Bialetti Moka Perculator you have. ?? Buying without seeing here in Port Lincoln is more than difficult. I bought a two cup some time ago and it was tiny.
Richard it’s a 6 cup Moka Pot. It makes about 2 cups.
Thanks Frazaer. Really lovely boat that you have. Thank you for posting.
Thanks Frazer. Beautiful Sydney Harbour and another of what I consider to be my home waters , having grown up in Collaroy and being a boatbuilder , Pittwater, Brookvale Mona Vale most of my life. Now stuck in Port Lincoln. Thanks for the inspiration.
Glad you enjoyed it
Just noticed that you picked up two more subscribers in the time that I was watching this video.
Thanks Frazer. Very interesting and a great video. Thanks for posting. Hope the radar is to your liking.
Thanks Frazer. My home waters. I was a shipwright at The Royal Motor Yacht Club back in the day and prior to that many years building boats in Brookvale and Mona Vale. My girlfriend Sue's family had their home in the Southernmost bay of Pittwater. Winjijimi Bay. Such a beautiful part of the world. I miss it so much being down here in Port Lincoln. Thanks for all the great videos.
Thank MateA lot of really great information for me here as Im planning to sail my catamaran home to Sydney from Port Lincoln at some time in the future.
Tsunamis are generally at their worst within harbors from what I am told. Japanese For Harbor Wave. A lot of chain out is a great idea. Thats what its there for.
Thanks for the great video. A lot of really useful information for me as I'm planning a trip around from Port Lincoln to Sydney.
A great video and very useful source of information for me. I shall follow your channel with interest. In particular your circumnavigation of Tasmania. Thanks so much for posting.
If you ever want someone to hold the camera, hit me up. Old, grey and wild with a touch for adventure. Well done on this, your trip of a lifetime. All things considered, a great production considering that you are single handed. Cheers and fair winds.
Well done mate, we just bought an FP47 Soana
Crossing the Tasman? 🥴🤔 more just skirting a small edge of the Tasman ☺️
Umm --- Near enough wouldn't you think. I sse this as a great souece of informstion . More credence to him . My opinion for what its worth --- A great effort.
wow Sailor, 👍
A famous boat next to you at Jibbon, "Archer"
I just discovered the joys and tastes of the Moka pot, can't believe it's taken me 71 years to find, better late than never, You have more patience than me, I start with boiling water, takes two minutes and my induction hot plate is great for this.
Nice. Just completed a BB to JB return its a good sail in right conditions. Bar at BB is a bit confusing, people go by the chart datum, but I use the bar LAT as that is what it is dredged to. I have measured the LAT for over two yrs it about 1.8-1.9 then add the tide of the moment to get total depth minus your keel depth to get clearance under the keel. Its never failed as a method. Local knowledge like that makes a difference but its hard to get in most ports of call. Best.
Thanks for that information. It's a great help.
Nice day out on the most beautiful harbour in the world.
Good adventure 👍⛵️
Nice clip Frazer - great support to the local growers - well done
Love it mate. Grand adventure.
Mate, you might want to ditch that music. It over rides your dialogue to the extent it’s hard to hear you. And it’s an annoying sound too.
Nice one Fraser, quick passage on Momentum! 2nd reef made for a comfortable trip for a solo sailor, well done 👍 Ill be in Sydney on Waywood this Weekend!
Are you sailing alone?
Mostly
A bit of cunningham may have helped with number 5
Mate, that's good stuff there. You're getting better each time. Keep up the good work, Cheers.... PR
Nice One Frazer , boat handled the conditions with ease , it so cool to watch your videos, im already visualising , what it is going to be like when i finally get on board Waywood , Pittwater will be one my first stops.
Looks good Fraser. Particularly liked seeing the photos of Momentum being built - do you have more of them to share? And from someone who's lost a few caps overboard, when you're sailing Tassie, don't forget to tether your cap to you something other than itself. :-)
Capt Ahab!
