How to Brew Back-to-Basics French Press Coffee
Would you recommend this over the Lucca a53? I’m looking for a machine to start a coffee cart and hopefully into a trailer soon after. I’m not the strongest person out there so the 75lb machine is a little daunting for myself and my helper to lift by ourselves lol. But I would like all the features you mention in your video for mostly solo running of the coffee cart. Thank you!
The brew and steam boilers are much bigger in the GS3. Based on your needs starting out I think the a53 would be good. It’s 12lbs less and warms up in 15 min. I’m pretty fast so I needed a little more horsepower. Worst case scenario, you outgrow the a53 in a couple years and sell it. I think in nice condition you could probably sell it (or just make it your home machine). Holler if you need anything else therobmcgee@gmail.com
Informative!! 🎉
Besttt video super simple
🙏🙏🙏
Have an AV myself for mobile coffee business. Been an excellent machine, but it does start to struggle a little if you're using the hot water tap too often for long blacks/americanos. Would you purchase I second if you were to upscale for larger events or go different brand/model?
Same here. What a great question. I think rather than upgrade to accommodate hot water usage, I would explore having a strong electric kettle on hand for Americanos. One thing we're exploring in our cart business is also showing up a little early and pulling shots for iced drinks so that they're easier to move through the queue without putting strain on the GS3. My home research is proving no difference in taste even if they are in a thermal carafe for an hour or so.
So hard to decide between the AV and Mp
I think it comes down to whether you want the freedom of the programmable shots or you want the flexibility of the manual paddle. For me, with the espresso cart it’s a no brainer to go with the AV.
Thank you for this video!! Love coffee, nice to know!! 🙌😎☕🥰🎉
You’re welcome. ✌🏼
how how does it get the milk? Can we use insant coffee powder inside it in place of matcha powder? What's the minimum capacity milk to be added?
What do you mean by your first question? You can definitely give it a shot! I bet that would work. For minimum milk capacity do you mean for microfoam or for a powder-based drink?
Great video! I’m wondering what your opinion is on whether iced coffee is better via an expensive espresso machine or whether I should just opt for this French Press method. I love big coffees like iced coffees from Starbucks, and I don’t like them feeling diluted - I want a nice coffee taste
I think what I would do is start with the French press because it’s like $30 and see if you’re happy with it. Worst case scenario you use it in the winter time when you want hot coffee and you can then buy an espresso machine. What machines have you looked into?
Thanks man! I’ve look at the (stupidly) expensive Breville Impress Barista Touch. I’ve been using Nespresso for a while but want to level up for good!
“Tare your scale and start your timer” Yeah I’m not doing that 😅 and if you do that everyday you’re probably some kind of a***hole
It’s almost as bad as people who make judgements of others in the comments. Almost.
I’m excited to receive mine . Thanks for the review
Of course!
How is cleaning it? Do you use a lid while frothing? Seems like it would make a huge mess if you don’t have a cover on it.
Cleaning is actually really easy. The tip pulls out and just a little soap and water. Boom. Also, I do use the cover and would recommend always doing so - except when shooting a video for social media. 😬
What is the jug capacity? I'm currently using the Breville Cafe which has a 740ml capacity. I hope this has a similar large capacity.
Sorry, it’s 450ml.
Brother 170 grams is criminal amount of coffee💀💀
To make cold brew? Nah.
ty for the alternate measurements!
My pleasure. ✌🏼
And it doesnt cost an additional $1.25 per serving like Starfucks charges
Omg i love this idea!!! So doing it instead of messing around with strainers 😂
It make take you a couple tries to dial it in exactly how you like it (holler if you need help) but it’s 100% worth it.
Just tried it, with milk. I need to adjust the ice/milk rate, but it tasted good
A little tweak here and there always helps.
@@therobmcgee absolutely. Thanks for the video!
@@calangobranco9113 you’re welcome!
Any comparison to a Nanofoamer Pro? I have one of those and it crapped out after a few months - loved what it could do when it worked, and this looks like a more versatile and less expensive replacement.
Yeah, the BaristaMaker can do flat white and cap milk microfoam and has settings for alt-milks (which I haven’t messed with much tbh) and is about $60 cheaper. The Subminimal looks really slick and I would think they’d give you a replacement. But if not, I highly recommend the DREO.
I have a Timemore black mirror however im getting FFFF error. Only a year old. Disappointed. I do pourover and will be doing Picopresso. Recommendations?
That sucks. I would reach out to the company directly. Hopefully they'll give you a replacement.
@@therobmcgeeI have reached out to no response from them on both IG and company support email. Shame I really liked it and my Timemore Chestnut C2 grinder which is awesome
Finally Iced Mocha recipe with proportions with actual coffee not instant coffee. I prefer to make it with double shot of espresso cause i like to feel a bit more coffee flavour with chocolate in the "background". I love it! Thanks!
Same here. The balance is what makes it great. I worked on that for a while before rolling it out.
Cool! Great to know
Yeah, I thought it was interesting!
@@therobmcgee its the flexibility and its reaction to the pours what makes V60 great
Thank you this is the most easiest way for me and less work 👏🏾👏🏾💯
You’re welcome. I’m happy to help.
Looks delicious ☕🧊
Only one way to find out.
Its insanely heavy, but it works fine on my normal 15A kitchen outlet. It's basically a commercial machine capable of running on normal residential wiring. Wondering if its worth it to upgrade the interface to the connected version.
"It's not light." - words spoken to my wife as I carried it into our condo on vacation recently. You're 100% correct. Honestly, I use the auto-on/off so much that I would consider it if I didn't have it. But also, as you know, it heats up pretty darn quick. If I'm working on the volumetric I'm using the interface on the machine because that just seems easier. I don't actually know how that works on the app, so now I have homework.
thank you for this! I just got my own home machine and am still figuring out how to do the things
That's why I'm here. Good luck on your journey.
Oh now I know why I never wanted a French press too much bother
It's not for everyone.
I don't get how these 1-3 pour recipes get such flat beds? I tried this 3 times in a row and despite swirling the coffee bed was never flat and started creating a cone. I tried swirling more and swirling less, whats the deal?
Hey. I don’t have this issue but I wonder if maybe grinding a little more coarsely would help. I always have a “wet sand” look to my bed when it’s finished. Let me know what you find.
Just bought one!
Nice, Micah. You won’t be disappointed!
Ok but how do you keep towel from smelling after so many times cleaning it. No matter how many times I rinse my towel , it stinks so much once it dries.
I usually only use it for 3 days and then wash or grab a new one.
Thanks!!!
Happy to help. ✌🏼
I love Wilfa, he is a great, reliable worker. But I don't grind espresso on it.
Fair enough!
Out-gassing of CO2 from roasted beans will increase air pressure inside the canister negating your vacuum. If the pump is coming on to correct the vacuum, that’s a good thing and doesn’t need to be “fixed”!
Yeah, you’re correct. I wasn’t clear. It was turning on will the lid was sitting on my counter, off the container itself.
Cheers, I liked the tips you gave along the way, I’m relatively new to making coffee
My pleasure. Good luck on your journey.
I just tried this😂😂 I just can’t express how thankful I am!! FINALLY iced coffee made simple 😎 I have been desperately trying to to decide what to do ever since the charge cord to my Homstan iced coffee machine broke 😫 I really hate waiting 12 to 24 hours plus I just like to have some fresh… NOW! Thanks so much for your simple informative video😊😄😎
Happy to help, Francine. ✌🏼
I happened to use the one I got for my homebrewing. It will measure to 0.01g as that's a requirement for a lot of my brewing chemicals if I'm scaling a recipe. Just because it was on hand, I've been using it. Downside is that it's not very water resistant, and over time the LCD tends to get a bit dim, but otherwise, it's $20 and is calibratable; i.e. you can calibrate to reference weights to ensure accuracy. I've never had an issue with latency on my shot pulls, similarly I am consistent to within about 0.05g shot to shot.
Glad to hear it! I have a Jennings 4000g capacity scale that I bought when I first started making coffee. It’s ugly and missing buttons and only goes to a .5g but it still works for cooking and baking.
The main thing that may break your requirements is this one only goes up to 500g. However, for espresso I've not run into any limitations there. And there's no timing feature as this is mainly marketed for jewelry and cooking. something to really drive home for the home user though, it's super easy to get bogged down into accuracy and trying to maximize your precision. But I've found that consistency is more key than the precision and accuracy. So even if this scale were somehow wildly off, it's consistently off.
@@DGPHolyHandgrenade That's a great point. Consistency is key. I've gone down the super accuracy and optimized brew path and banged my head into a wall over and over. Then I learned not to let perfect be the enemy of pretty dang good.
This video perfectly embodies why Acaia ends up being the only dependable option. TH-cam recommends this video to me, it’s basically a sell for zero hero which I have never heard of before. Cool. Click the Amazon link and oh surprise, turns out nobody else has either. Junk reviews and I’m click funneled into all the other Amazon suggestions for $50 scales with questionable reviews and I’m back to looking at Acaia again knowing I’m just going to have to bite the bullet because apparently small reliable scales are ridiculously hard.
It’s a sell for any scale that is pretty darn good that doesn’t break your bank account on features most people don’t need in most cases. I have Acaia, Jennings, Hario, zerohero, and previously had the other scales. I test and consider the end-users needs before I recommend things. I wouldn’t tell the casual espresso enthusiast to buy the E65S I have but would recommend the X54 or Vario.
$12 is literally all you need - my does time, grams or ounces and 10th of gram - everything more expensive is a scam
Which scale are you using?
IMO there's a few more elements to consider when buying a scale that you didn't mention: 1. Low latency. Many cheaper scales (~$20) will have 0.1g accuracy, but often they'll be super slow to update measurements. Some scales update only every second or half second, which could result in a delay of up to 10+ grams once you stop the shot. Of course, you could manually compensate for this by stopping the shot early, but that's inherently error prone. 2. Ergonomics. Having a scale that you can pick up and move without accidentally pressing a button is important. Some scales, like the Timemore Black Mirror Nano, put their capacitive buttons in awkward places that makes them hard to use and difficult to move. 3. Water resistance. This is more of a "nice to have" than a necessity, but if you're spending a lot of money on a coffee scale you might as well spend just a bit more to get one that won't break if you spill coffee all over it.
100% agree with those additions. Thanks.
You're right, but does a scale like this even exist? I've had Hario Metal Drip Scale for a couple of years, recently I flooded it with water, and after it got dried, the display cuts the top part of all digits, which makes it barely usable. I'm looking for a replacement for it and also an upgrade (the Hario is a bit slow, and the buttons are not always responsive), and I noticed that currently my only one reasonable candidate is Timemore Black Mirror Basic 2 (I've seen a test and it's very quick in terms of the booting and responsing to buttons taps). I'm also considering AVX KC215B, but I'm a bit scared that it could get broken after a while. Is there something similar to the Black Mirror, but cheaper (which could mean that probably without the pairing with iOS feature) on the market?
@@adrianniechcia2579 what about the 3Bomber mini? $15 less than the Timemore and similar design and functionality.
I have a scale for pour overs from hero company it is high quality and way cheaper
I’m a big fan of zeroHero.
@@therobmcgee yep
I like the accuracy and build quality. But now there are better options.
Yeah for me I have the lunar and never used the app only for updating the firmware.
Crazy, right?

Thank you.
Excellent video! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks, Dave!
When someone makes coffee based on taste then he is simply telling his story instead of how it should be done.
To a certain extent, yes, but I think there are some basic qualities like clarity, sweetness, strength, and mouthfeel that can be generalized and communicated.
Thank you for this video. Works really well 😊
My pleasure.
Thank you Rob 😍
You’re welcome!
OkThe most important thing is the water temperature. I use whatever Columbian roast that I have a digital coupon for. Medium grind. By making sure that the water temperature is 200-205 F I get a damned fine cuppa coffee. Also the coffee to water ratio makes a big difference but that has more to do with personal preference as the ratio affects the strength and not so much the flavor.
Truth
I want a video just about latte art.
“A lot of people want a lot of things”
Milk is a *good* choice. 🥛
Beautiful machines beautiful review thank you very much❤ I have some question how much do steamer should be I use C/elsius and how much the machine the water should be thank you very much🙏
Thank you. I will double check later today and will get back with you.
Ok so the brew boiler is 96c and the steam boiler is 126c. Great results with both. I use a medium roast espresso. If I was doing dark roast I would drop it down a few degrees. The steamer “could” be lowered a few degrees as well if you wanted to.
@@therobmcgee thanks bro appreciate it.. 🙏🙏 I'm sure that you work with the mini you think the machine that we have better? I can still change that to the mini if I want...
I wouldn't change to the mini. The GS3 brew boiler is much bigger and the steam wand is bigger and more flexible. The mini is great, but you'd be downgrading.
@@therobmcgee thanks very much bro thank you I stay with this machine in the right side front of the machine Dove some option for button I see some video that you can have it to make the water more strong something like that I don't know
I’m planning on starting a coffee cart. I heard mixed reviews about using this machine because of the high volume of customers. What’s your take on that?
Dude, if you’re plumbed in using the flojet it rips insanely consistent shots for hours on end. We’ve done 9am-3pm events with a non-stop line without issue. AV over MP for carts 100%. Plus the You and Mini don’t have the same horse power.
@@therobmcgee thanks bro I have the same machine la marzocco gs3 Av I hope it's better from the Mini 🤦 or the mini better than her what do you think? And don't forget to give me the which number the steamer C and the Machine boiler
I agree with @therobmcgee , the GS/3 packs some serious horsepower, this is one of it's main points over the competition. It will keep pulling shots and steaming milk as fas as you can tell it to. You can really stand it on it's head.
