Sail with the Gales
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 พ.ค. 2021
Ahoy there....and thanks for checking out our channel!
We're Pete & Deb Gale from Vancouver, Canada, with a lifelong passion for travelling the world and experiencing new people, places and things. In 2018 and 2019 we spent a few weeks with a skipper friend on her Bavaria 45 sailboat in Australia, and started to wonder if we could opt out of the daily grind a little earlier than planned and travel on a budget.
So here we are; we quit our jobs….we bought a sailboat, we have a small cruising kitty, very little sailing experience and hope to learn along - we'll sea! ⛵️
We've always lived by the mantra "what's meant for you, won't go by you", so join us on our adventure as we find out if this sailing/cruising lifestyle is meant to be!
Thank you for watching and if you enjoy our videos please SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and COMMENT, it motivates us to keep doing it 😉🙏🏻

When is a sailboat not a sailboat? (new standing rigging) S2 | Ep25
In this episode we look back to Summer 2023 when we spent a number of weeks in Marmaris, Turkey upgrading our Amel Sharki sailboat. If you're interested in the process for servicing an offshore life raft, or replacing standing rigging....this may be the right kind of episode for you.
Thanks for following and enjoy!

You might think we’ve been “missing in action”, but the truth is we’ve been focussed on some major boat upgrades and repairs these past few months. While Galene now looks like new, inside and out, it’s taken its toll on our physical and mental health and well being. Here’s a quick video to bring you up to date. Thanks for watching! Pete & Deb

We're Cruising Again! (Greece to Turkey) and we ruined our new paint job in just 5 days - S2 | Ep 21
มุมมอง 5439 หลายเดือนก่อน
After 10 long months in the boat yard we are finally free to slip the lines and make a mad dash out of Greece and EU Schengen zone, to Turkey. Not surprisingly this turns into a "shakedown" cruise with numerous pieces of equipment failing, but we were not expecting to ruin our shiny new paint job along the way...

มุมมอง 1.6K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's been 10 long months in Corfu Yacht Yard and we are beyond ready to leave. However, there are still a number of last minute tasks to manage, along with our feelings of excitement and trepidation about finally splashing....like, do we even know how to operate and sail a boat anymore?!!!

In this episode we tackle our biggest boat job yet on Galene, a new hull paint job, and despite all the of research, preparation and hours and hours of labour involved, we fail to get the result we hoped for....it was devastating.

Boat Yard Sagas - Dirtiest boat job EVER! | Ep1
มุมมอง 2.1Kปีที่แล้ว
After almost 3 months away from Galene, we return to the boat yard in Corfu to commence work on a long list of maintenance and upgrade work. Feeling a little overwhelmed by the magnitude of tasks we've set ourselves, we decide to hold our noses and start with the dirtiest of boat jobs first! Viewer discretion advised; there are a number of expletives used to describe the task at hand!

Loved the video guys. Its amazing how much you learn when you're having work carried out on your boat. You'll never regret having these things renewed, especially when you start heading west 😉. Thank goodness the furler chain plate was seen then. We have 26 points of contact with our rigging, I'm assuming you must have similar. We understand how costly new rigging is on a Ketch, eye watering! Pete, your narrative was brilliant, and yours too Deb 🥰⛵️🧡
Awww - thanks for watching and yes, it was our biggest investment yet and one that we hope will see us through our full tenure on Galene 🤞🏻. We had heard from a couple of Sharki owners about their chain plates failing, but was still shocked to see ours was on the brink of doing the same, it’s given us a prompt to inspect things more frequently! 🧐🤗
Hi Deb and Pete, your best video so far, nicely narrated and Pete your voiceovers are BBC-like , bravo !
Thanks for watching friend! I think Pete has missed his calling 😉🤣
Great video, new rigging will give you some peace of mind as will the serviced lift raft and a new main. All coming together, keep it going!
Thanks guys - you’re always so encouraging and we appreciate it 🙏🏻. We’re about to cross the Atlantic on our friend’s boat, hoping for some free time to catch up on video editing 😉. Looking forward to getting back on our Galene in the Spring ⛵️☺️
Love Love Love! Spectacular camera work - loved the underwater shot of Pete diving in and .... he has a tan - never thought we would see that. You guys are living your best life and we are are so happy for you. PS Get a cat! Love you!!
Thanks friends - we can’t wait to share our life on the water with you in person, we’ll be waiting when you’re ready 😘🤗
Thanks guys.. 😊
Wow
Don't be too concerned about having your videos close to real time. Our latest episode was recorded in October last year. To make sure the TH-cam Channel doesn't take over and interfere with us enjoying our cruising we only put out a video every second week. When we're actively cruising and on the move, we accumulate way too much footage in a fortnight to fit into one episode so there's no chance of staying current. We do put the date on screen in every episode and have found it really doesn't make a difference to viewing numbers how far back it was recorded but rather whether the content is interesting or not. We do catch up a fair bit each time we take a break and stay in one place for a while. In the end, it's your channel so do what you want to do with it and don't worry about anything else. Cheers Rob & Karen.
Thanks so much for the words of encouragement Rob & Karen 🤗. Been finding it hard to get motivated again because just as we thought we could settle into cruising life we started having engine problems. I’ve been wondering whether to just let the channel go, but hearing your approach and given I particularly enjoy the creative process, I’m going to pull out the laptop today and see if I can make an sense of all the footage we have from last year ☺️⛵️📷
Thanks for the update.. 😊
Thanks guys! 😊
I'm curious about your work, looking forward to see the results! There will come a day we have to do this with our Santorin and I'm not looking forward to...
Hi there - we filmed a lot of the work but the videos won’t be out until later this year. If there’s something specific you have a question on relating to new headliner, boat painting etc, feel free to message us by FB Messenger or email ‘sailwiththegales@gmail.com’ and we’re happy to share info, photos etc. Thanks for following 👍🏻
@@sailwiththegales thanks for the offer! We have time, at the moment all the lining mostly still sticks where it should. But as it is- it will come in future. And we first have to get our engine running. Seems to be extremely broken 😞
@hafenkinoblog yes, the engine is a must even with your lovely RT sails. Wishing you good luck, we definitely can’t offer any help when it comes to engines but will follow your progress.
@@sailwiththegales thanks 🙏
Lovely to see you back on YT 😊. Great update, you really have been super busy. Well done on achieving so much over the past few months. Looking forward to hearing what your plans are 😉🥰⛵️
Thanks guys….slowly but surely getting our head back in the game. Let’s just say we might see you on the other side of the pond, but Galene will be wintering in Samos again 😉
@@sailwiththegales Awwwww exciting 😉🥰
Great update! Keep it going ❤
Thanks for your kind words of encouragement 🙏🏻. We are trying ⛵️☺️
Greetings you two! It's the truth that I thought of you two tonight while doing dishes. Thrilled to hear you are on Instagram. Shall hop on over there now! Happy sailing.
Awww - always lovely to hear from you Cynthia. Hope you and Fritz are enjoying a lovely BC summer 🤗🤗
Great update guys, nice to hear your news. So what are these long term future plans of which you speak?
Thanks for watching….! Longer terms plans - hmmm 🤔. Learn to sail 😉
Hi from Oinoussa and Freyia 2 🤓 We hope your wrists got better and nice to see and hear you! We are going south tomorrow to Ormos, should be a quick and funny ride downwind with the Gennaker 😊 CU hopefully in September
Hi Mattius - great to hear from you, did you break all speed records reaching Ormos?! 😉 Wrists are improving 👍🏻. Hope to be tapping away on the keyboard again real soon. We’ll touch base when we check back into Greece and see where you and Helga are at that time ⛵️⛵️
Great to see you back, don’t leave it so long next time 😂
LOL - we just got out of the boatyard after 2 months doing more upgrades. Another mad dash to Turkey currently underway ⛵️😂. Will get back to regular editing soon, thanks for sticking with us 👍🏻
Getting caught up on these videos and they are so interesting! Nice work both of you! 👏 👏 👏
Awww - thanks, we try, not too hard due to all the boatyard work, but we try 😉
Continue to enjoy these videos and impressed with the navigation and communiction skills! " just buff that out"... applies to classic cars too. A story when we see you next 😅
Too funny - can’t wait but hope you want at the wheel like me 🤦🏻♀️
Really enjoyed the adventure and the information provided. Will take similar route in June. Great job, well done.
Thanks Nick, glad you enjoyed it and hope you see dolphins en route too! 🐬⛵️ Fair winds!
Like the new intro. We also did that boat trip many years ago. I didn't like the turtle part either, but the rest was fun. Sometimes, you just have to do these things haha! Great to see you back out on the water. Look forward to following your summer season 🥰⛵
Thanks guys- we actually had a bit of real life footage to make an intro for the 2nd season 🤣. This all happened summer of 2023 but we’re planning to revisit most of it again this year (except the turtles ! 🫣). Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
You better watch out, Deb. Pete's going to get you back when you least expect it! Great to "see" you two again. Pirates?!?
LOL - thanks for watching Cynthia and don’t worry, we came through the pirate experience unscathed 😉
Thanks guys!
1:32 wow getting burnt Deb..
….that’s what happens when I remove the paper painting coveralls Trev 😉🤣
@@sailwiththegales yeah ya gotta watch that sun, i wanted to make a bigger topic about it when young Steve from Cordelia had his scare, one of them topics people don’t want to really think could happen, Luckily for me I’m from dark skinned decent although that doesn’t guarantee much, i tend to brown up, but Wendy my wife? She burns under a light bulb 😂
Hi from Freyia 2
Hey there - thanks for tuning in! 👍🏻
Fair play on getting the painting done. We’re going to repaint cockpit, coach roof & deck when we haul out. We are looking forward to our shake out sail 2024 this weekend (May) . Late this year because of jobs
Good luck with the paint job and hope your shake out sail went well! ⛵️
Need to install holding tank. What size is it? Wondering if position of tank would improve pump out capabilities
Hi there - it’s 60 litres. When we bought her there was a 80 litre tank in the V-berth (with expensive macerator pump) but it didn’t work/empty properly. We had the new one installed and it empties by gravity and works great. Also a “pump out” connection installed on deck which was a requirement for sailing in Turkey last year 😊
Looks awesome! And I think your thumbnails looks good (your question on FB TH-cam group). They are appealing and I will definitely binge your other episodes and follow your journey. Fair winds⛵️
Thanks so much, that’s valuable feedback for us! Love your logo btw 😊
@@sailwiththegales Been watching 6-7 more episodes now and don’t understand why you don’t have more views. Good stuff and so nice to see the great vibe between the two of you☺️ Maybe our paths will cross in Croatia this summer? Chartering a boat there for four weeks (third consecutive year for us down there now, just love it so much☺️) and yes we kind of like our logo🙏☺️
@sailingwyn Thanks so much, feel free to promote us 😉 You are going to absolutely LOVE Croatia.🇭🇷 Unfortunately now that it’s part of the Schengen visa program we won’t be going back. That said we spent 8 weeks there in 2022 (we made a few episodes in Season One about it). If you want any tips or have questions don’t hesitate. Happy Sailing ⛵️
Love the companionway door countersinks in the frame. No figuring where to store boards
Yes, classic Amel feature. Although it took a few cracks of the head in the beginning to remember to slide the top cover back after dropping the door on our way out 🤦🏻♀️
No loo paper in toilet paper, blocks up holding tank. Nappy bags are your friend
💯agree - nothing goes down our new loo unless its been eaten first 😉
Just found you after your FB question about thumbnails. Love Pete sitting on the toilet while doing the hull cleaning 😂 feeling crappy😂 just subscribed
Awww thanks for the sub and yes, it was a perfect seat to sit and ponder life “the thinker” pose! 🤣
Great video, and good job getting to Turkey! We'll be sailing a similar trip on our Amel Maramu, setting off from Preveza in mid-April; albeit we're going around the bottom of the Peloponnes and up towards Idra before heading west. We're aiming to get to Kos late May and then across to Turkey before our 90 days run out! Where are you now?
Hi John - thanks for tuning in and glad you liked it. We’re currently in Samos Boatyard. Splashing first week of May and making our way down to check out of Symi by June 9th latest. What’s the name of your Maramu, we’ll look out for you. Were on No Foreign Land btw ⛵️
@@sailwiththegales I'll pm you
Been there, done that on a dock. All part of the learning process. You'll be fine
Good job guys! Nicely edited and great audio even with the wind gens whirling. Looking forward to more. Cheers!
Thanks for watching and your encouragement. Spent ages trying to get the audio right and glad it sounded right 👍🏻
Cheers guys!
Thanks for tuning in mate!
6:07 oh the distinct helm of a thoroughbred AMEL.. 😊
Oh yes, our happy place 😍
Thanks Pete and Deb, I actually feel into the unsubscribe crack in TH-cam, technically I wasn’t unsubscribe, i just didn’t get recommended.. cheers guys! Keep posting to the group as much as possible.. spread the word..
It’s a fickle platform that’s for sure….glad you found your way back to us 👍🏻⛵️
hey ... nice video
Was going to say, i think BA is around there, i remember you going through that cut..
He’s back on the other side at the moment woodworking away, hopefully we’ll “ketch” up at some point ⛵️😂⛵️
Thanks Ian - we’re back to boat work now, like you 🛠️
I always hate using the radio, don't know why, I just feel awkward 😂. We would love to motorsail the Corinth Canal, you're very lucky. Btw, you're both a lot betterxthan you give yourselves credit for. The squalls are good experience ready for your Atlantic crossing 😊. Great video guys 🥰⛵️
Oh boy! I can’t escape you guys 🤗.
@@trevhedges Haha! We love Pete & Deb and hope they will catch up with us the Caribbean sometime soon ⛵😊
Thanks for watching and as always your encouragement, we’re constantly facing our fears but feeling alive. One day we’ll grow up to be chill cruisers like you 😉
Super episode, Deb and Pete!! Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure.
Glad you’re enjoying the voyage Cynthia and thanks for following/ encouraging us 😊⛵️
Great episode, well done, it’s all coming together, have confidence in yourselves, you’re doing great!
Thanks so much….its a learning curve for sure, never a dull moment! 😉 Appreciate you taking the time to leave some words of encouragement 😊
nice video , well done
Thanks Ian!
What did Pete have written in his book? Is it a log book? Just wondering. Well done for navigating Lefkada Canal. We too pay for Navily. Its a great app. Did you know that its also used by backpackers? We've had about 50 people contact us on route to the Caribbean asking for passage across or to the next stop. I did feel for you, we've all had situations like that and we have marks just like yours on our hull so don't feel too bad 🥰⛵️
Hey there - thanks for the words of encouragement and that is interesting about Navily, wish we had it in our backpacking days 😉. Pete was making a note of answers to the questions he expected the bridge to ask us when we asked permission to transit. He’s like a deer in headlights in the VHF 🫣, as you know it can be hard to understand accents, so he likes to be prepared 🤓⛵️😊
Great to see you going again - good to have ya back! Don’t beat yourself up, happens to the best of us!
Thanks guys - the more time that passes the less it matters, although we’re just in the boatyard gearing up to repair it so there will probably be some more cussing 🤬 😉⛵️
this happens whith the bests, so don't worry to hard
Awww - thanks for your kind words, really appreciate it 🙏🏻
I remember when I sailed Lafkas and point s south, [Vilha bay included] it was beautiful, but the Meltemi & Meterini winds always appear unannounced. You would be sailing in 10 knots of breeze then WHAM! 20-25 knots in an instant. Anhored in Vilha Bay and overnight we had a wicked storm that kept us up most of the might. Overall the Ioanian sea was great.
I hope we have a chance to go back to Vhilo and Lefkas, we didn’t even have time to get off the boat. I bet you had lots of good times in the area, it’s beautiful! ⛵️
Great video. We love watching you guys as we are in the same boat (pun intended) as we are brand new and will be in the Ionian this summer. Our boat is in Aktio Marina. Sorry the scratch happened, I’m sure it was heartbreaking. Also thanks for the tip for Navily premium. I just downloaded it.
How exciting for you guys! The Ionian is such a beautiful sailing (motoring!) region! Glad you find our content useful and yes, the premium Navily subscription pays for itself in terms of keeping us out of trouble, mostly 😉⛵️ Thanks so much for watching ☺️
Good effort
Thank you so much 😀
We have to admire your grit. A week in the yard and we're over it. It will all be worth it though. Cheers!
Thanks! We hope that each year the time in the yard will become less and less 🤞🏻😉
Thanks guys - we’re hoping it’s an investment of our time that will pay off after this year 🤞🏻
The hard work really paid off. She looks beautiful
Thanks so much - we’re discovering it’s an ongoing project but at least we are getting some sailing in now too 😉⛵️
She’s looking amazing!
Thanks man- that means a lot! ☺️
