Check out a "the tabletop engineer." he played the DHM and had the exact same problem you are having.

The DHM is a tougher play than I'd have imagined, though I think you had some poor rolls losing so many minions early. One thing that could help is getting out in front more with your Necro to help soak some attention, and avoiding the softer minions as much as possible. Being capped at 2 Quality minions is pretty brutal though!

We played this for quite some time great game. Good way to bust out your old miniatures. There were a few quality of life changes we made along the way. Changed the minimum distances to 1" as 3" is a bit too restrictive on some scenarios. Also playing a pitched battle is a good way to learn the rules but really you have to do the scenarios as its much more fun plus really stops any min/maxing. Scenarios in lion rampant can usually be used without adjustment so thats handy. We used to allow one activation reroll a turn whilst we were learning, to help game flow. Then we agreed the 'befuddle thee' spell was OP so we didnt use it. Anyway these are just suggestions love these osprey sandbox blue book games.

Great rules and is the foundation for many other genres. So if you learn one they are all similar. I would say it is a "small" army game or a "big" skirmish game because you have units but you don't need a lot of models or units. Standard army size is 24 points which can vary in number of units but typically 4-6. And they work really well with multiple players because it is I-GO-U-GO rather than alternating activation. I highly recommend them and enjoyed your video!

For any wargame or RPG game : Preparation and Planning in that order. Do you need the maximum number of figures allowed for your group? Or a smaller group with more weapons and powers? Work out what will suit you the best. Look at what you are allowed to know in the scenario if you have 3 scenarios try to think what you need to win them. Also if the scenario that you know little about, put all you know into working out what you do know or you have guessed about it.. If it looks to be an assault then prepare an perhaps alter your crew to suit, but if it will be a trap or puzzle then think accordingly. If you are sure you will lose then do what Napoleon did during the Waterloo campaign. Put your 2 ic in charge and blame him for whatever goes wrong 😇

love this...one of my go-to army-size games and simple enough that i started playing with my son when he was 7. i do wish it had a bit more depth; i keep hoping for a second edition treatment like lion rampant received which allows it to expand with more special skills and spells. but even without that, it's a bargain. like most of my larger model count games, i make it work on a 60x44" tabletop or 48x36" in a pinch.

Half a year has past since this video, so what are your thoughts about the game now? Likes / dislikes.... I just got the game, and it seems nice that even though a character is removed from the table (killed), that doesn't necessarily mean that the character is completely dead, unless an 8 is rolled. I am also considering just taking both options each time a character levels up (instead of selecting only one of the two), as more abilities equal more options / fun.

Nice job! Yeah, paladins are tough as nails. Oh, and Offense attacks go against Defense (unless stated otherwise), even for ranged attacks against your minions. Good luck against those pesky heroes next time!

I'm I the only person who is not at all on board with the under mat terrain? I think it plays and looks bad. The mats seem great, but putting books under your mat for terrain is not it.
