Sold the 750
Down to a single bike again, which I'm okay with because the 850GL suits me just fine.
As a side note, this is about the third time I've done this video, thanks to crashing video editors. Persistence pays off, at least that's what my wife keeps telling me.

Safer on a Motorcycle?

Wherein I ponder whether it's theoretically possible to be safer on the road when on a motorcycle than in a car. In reality... probably not. But possible? In certain cases, maybe.

I'm not normally a negative person, especially while riding. But sometimes... you know... cagers!
That was the exact bike and color. I bought brand new in 1981. Wish I still had it, bought it in Sioux City, Iowa
That seal is made to install with the back dry, lubricant should only be applied to the lip of the seal, it is the friction of the dry rubber inside the bore housing that retains the seal in place
Still got your 850?
Buy a tripod..
what happened to the maker of this channel? no posts in years. Did he crash his bike? anyone know?
Just got this same bike. Looking forward to riding. 👍
Definitely ordered my handle bars. Those buckhorn handles needs upgrade
Just got this bike. From Michigan now shipped to Hawaii. Changing the handle bars similar to the one pictured here. Parts are hard to come by on this end. Suzuki shop here are worried they might not get most of the parts. But love this bike! Rides and sounds exactly on the video. Thanks! For your review.
That blankity blank blank!
Hey man, just bought a 1981 GS850L with intermittent spark, go figure. I looked up the part you listed as a replacement but it says its for a polaris UTV? is this correct?
Yep, that's the one! However, the regulator/rectifier only charges the battery. Replacing it will most likely not fix an intermittent spark issue. Head over to the GS Resources forums for help with that.
Thanks for taking the time to put this review up here. One of these popped up on my local Craigslist, and I was just curious what "real folks", and not moto journalists, thought of them.
Saved my susuki form a cafe racer butcher
Right on!
what have you been up to havent seen any new videos.i have a 82 850 gl also
I'm still riding, I sold the 850GL and picked up a verrry nice '79 850G with a bunch of '80 upgrades about a year and a half ago. I do love it so. I should probably do an update video, I only stopped making videos because my cheap cameras kept dying and I didn't feel like shelling out hundreds of bucks for a proper helmet cam setup.
@@motocharles4208 that would be interesting to see.take care
Alot of motor rattling.........
The chemicals, oils, gasoline, carcinogens will make their way through even if they appear intact, that’s why you need to dispose of them but if exposure is minimal I guess you can reuse them and save money.
I had that same bike in the early 80's. I put 33k miles on it before someone stole it! Solid bike. Daily ride for a couple years. Enjoy!
I had the red one. Loved that bike
Wow. You did it in-frame? Maybe I will rebuild the one gathering dust in the back of my shop !! Thanks.........
Dude, your video sucks
Hi mi friend. You have e-mail?
what happened charles why no new videos?
my gs1100 with the same dashboard as yours HAVE self canceling signals, i think your is juste broken
Hey charles would love to keep in contact during my rebuild on my 1980 850Gl
are you still making videos charles?
no new videos? are you still alive charles?
I about to purchase (probably) this exact bike from a guy who is moving, has a newer bike, and cannot take this one with him. He is going to let it go for only $650, which makes me ask a LOT of questions (was it laid down, engine issues, etc.) Turns out, he just doesn't want it. Sad thing is that it was all original when he got it, and took it in to have it look sportier :( I saw the before photos, and am really hoping he has the extra parts. Not sure if I am ever going to get it painted back to the original brownish-purple with gold pinstripe, but we'll see. He put in about $1K with all kinds of new parts all over the bike, so it's not like I'll be picking up a horrid basket case. It turns over and starts on occasion, which tells me he still has the old gas in it, sigh. I am seriously looking forward to this Monday to look at it, and then come over with a U-Haul bike hauler :) Thanks for the info on this bike, and the website you posted!
I also have a gs850g and while the weight sucks around town it's nice to have a heavy bike on the hwy.
I have a 1982 GS650G which is lighter. The GS850G uses the same frame as the GS1100G, so the frame will be a heavy beast. That's what attracted me the GS650G, as the frame is a lot smaller and you're still getting almost 700cc and over 70hp.
awesome bike.....I was 18 n 82....those bikes look so good....I had a78gs400 back n 82.... looking for 750e now
Hi, I have a 1980 gs850L and need to find the correct petcock. I have found 2 different petcocks online, one is 44mm from the center of the mounting bolts and the other 50mm any help would be apperciated.
hey i just pickuped one of these 1980 gs850l and i was wondering if you could point me toward the correct petcock for this thing, I've seen 2 different ones.
Have you checked out the GS forums or gsarchive.bwringer.com/ ?
Actually I found the correct petcock, I never got any reply from gs forum lol
I had a 80 gs750 same as this one with S&W Street Stroker shocks, fork brace, RD 350 bars, header. Fast and excellent handler, nice comfy riding position. A suggestion to the owner of this bike... I noticed your tach isn't working, I found that when my tack wouldn't read properly or not at all, to clean the cup inside the tach that's spun by the cable. It seems moisture finds it's way inside and effects the tach.
Fantastic review. I'm loving old Japanese bikes, my dad just got a cb900 and I love that thing.
Where did you buy the seal from?
Any online OEM parts vendor will have it, your local Suzuki dealer can order it too. I probably got this one from an online vendor called partsoutlaw.
Whats size or number thats oil seal
@@motocharles4208 thanks for the video, I was looking for the seal number and your video helps very much 👍
I have an 1980 gs 750. Man you got lucky with that one. Pristine. I'm envious. Got mine with 18k miles and I've put about 15k more on it. Put a valve cover gasket and fork seals on it when I got it. Other than that zero issues. Just general maintenance. What I really like about the gs is that it was really advanced for its time. Seems like Suzuki had to try harder than the others because they came late to the 4 stroke game. Long message but I've not met anyone else who has one lol. And I've read every article I could find on the gs. Never got to talk about it with anyone though. Pretty rare bike.
Just started watching your videos, I just acquired a 81 gs750e, pretty much identical to the one in your videos, except no crash bars (which I want) and the rear shocks are OG. OG paint as well and is Immaculate, only has 8500 miles on it as well. Im the 3 rd owner, previous owner only road for one season and before that the OG owner had it but pasted away and it sat for a while. First off, it’s my first bike and what a first bike to have, fast. Definitely see why people may like it, dislike it. I’m 6’3 so sitting up high is nothin crazy, along with having to rest feet, but can be cramped when riding and my feet on foot rests, almost like a win-lost there no matter what, depending on height. But still, a hell of a find. And as a beginner the hardest thing I find is the friction zone on these and trying not to stall, because it is at the end, but also soo small, but still a great bike. Also, I took the BRC as well, glad I did because this is a monster compared to those, then again, what isn’t? Haha
I have this exact bike, less than 6K, stored for 17 years. Everything he said is true about this bike. The engine on this bike is a TSCC engine, 4 valves per cylinder, book says 63 HP, 625 dry weight. In 1981 it was rated the best 750 of the big four, top speed 129 mph. Cruising speed is 85 mph. Shorter front forks, dual front disc, rear shocks has 5 spring rates and 4 dampening adjustments. For a bike that is 36 years old, it runs like a bat out of Hell. Yeah, I kinda like it.
TSCC TWIN SWIRL COMBUSTION CHAMBER
Looks fun, I have the same project on my '83 this winter. Love this bike.
Best gloves ever.
Hey Charles, Great video. I could not agree more with you. I am a new rider and today I went for a ride in the morning and I just felt so confident and everything went so smooth. I loved my morning ride so much that I decided to go for another one in the evening. I had a little moment of target fixation in one of the curves I came across and this started the domino effect of mistakes. I just couldn't wait to get home so the ride could be over. Glad to hear even skilled riders are bothered by the same things. Take care
I work in fuel industry and wear these under my industrial gloves. Because cancer causing ordorless Benzene and other odorful hydrocarbons (gas, oil, asphalt, etc) penetrate Nitrile after an hour, it may be a good idea to throw them away after single use. Your choice though.
whats the top speed did you do with your bike?
Beautiful bike. I had one just like it in college 25 years ago, and was sad to let it go when I moved on to the real world
These are awesome. Even reusable if you don't tear them. 5mill and 9 mill is all you need.
Multiplexed tracks... I like it.
try riding with an open face helmet with a freezing sub 32 degrees ?

I just purchased a 850 a couple weeks ago, it's definitely a fixer upper as I haven't gotten it started yet but I too live ypsi/arbor area and am having trouble with the front brakes, would like to pick your brain on the issue I'm having with the handle having no pressure what so ever.
Hey man! thank you for the informative video. just a little feedback about the video: you could improve the flowness of the video by editing/cutting the parts where you are distracted, silent or going off topic. Cheers!
