MPC X and Roland Fantom Proper Midi Connection
Thanks for the honest review!!
Hi, great video, my interest and question is: which one is more honest and detailed? The hs8 or evo 80? Because they always talk about the frequency range but little about how artificial or natural their sound is, thanks!
@@luffer_punk Now that I’ve had them for a while. The Evo is more honest and detailed IMO
Great vid - and yea, agree, you got to explore a piece of gear right to the core. I have a MPC Keys 61 and love it... but hate the keybed, and now the pitch wheel and mod wheel have died... so I'm looking to get a Fantom EX to use as a master board with the sampling and sequencing power of the Key 61 on the tier above. Was cnsidering a Korg Nautilus, but hate the lack of controls and the clunky touch screen... so, any more input about using these two together is welcome.
It’s a great board with a lot under the hood, and I think it’s a great companion to the MPC
...привет,если есть коммерческие саунд пакеты для фантома давай меняться (чтоб не покупать много)
I haven't purchased any kits for the Fantom. But I'll definitely keep that in mind
Looking left and right, cant find the life of me a reason to skip the HS8... The rear port may be an issue, but I already have to effectively stick it to the wall to eliminate boundary interference and treat around it, but .. the budget allows for it.
@@szeredaiakos Tbh for the money the Hs8 are some damn good speakers. I can not get the focals to hit hard in the low end like I want them too.
Do you still have the Adam speakers? How do the Adams compare to the Focals?
@@TachyonTheImmortal Yes I do still have the Adam speakers. The mid range in the Adam’s are decent however it’s hard to compare the Adam’s I have to the focals due to the size of both of them. My Adam’s are 7” and focals 8”. So the bass in the Adam’s in my room Imo are almost non existent. But that’s just me. My space is untreated and it’s rather large for that size. If I were you and you had the money demo them both and return the ones you’re less happy with. Or go to your local Guitar center and see if they have them on demo to try both of them. I hope this helps.
@@jltbk5420 I just got the focal 8". Need to set them up though. I was considering the Adam 8" as a second pair because I'd like try out the ribbon tweeters.
I have my MPC X SE connected to my Roland Fantom EX 8. My goal is to play all my Roland sounds while combining the sounds from my MPC and saving the entire project on my MPC. I have my TRS quarter inch cables coming out the Roland going into the inputs of my MPC. I’m also connecting the MPC & Roland via USB. My issue is my MPC is not displaying the Fantom EX 8 in the “Input ports & output ports” of the midi section. I decided to order the midi din cables because maybe this was the missing component . Do you have any other tips on where I am going wrong?
I had this same issue. You have to go into the mpc preferences go into midi/sync then tap the reset on the input and output ports the reset looks like a circle ⭕️ arrow moving to the left. This should fix that. Hopefully it works. But the Fantom I had was the first model the 6 yours is updated so that maybe an issue if this doesn’t work.
@@GGVMusic Make sure you pick midi the 5th option it looks like a midi end then on the midi port scroll past Midi ABCD and Remote until you see the Fantom
@@GGVMusic I remember having a similar issue but I fixed it. Unfortunately I’ve gotten rid of both units so I wouldn’t be able to walk you through step by step however I still own a mpc live and that’s how I hook up all my synths. I use midi through usb connected to my Mio xl
I have krk5 inches now but I wanted to upgrade my monitoring . On the other hand, the focal 50 evo and the yamaha hs8 are relatively close to each other in the price range . What do you suggest? Focal 50 or yamaha hs8 or even focal 65evo? Thanks
I track out my hardware into my daw in standalone mode..If I'm in controller mode I export out into a folder and drag and drop into the daw or just record 1 track at a time into the daw (logic or reason)..some say sonically its not as good but it works fine for me..I use an Mpc X and a usb hub going into the Mpc all of my hardware is usb out to the hub so its easy in standalone or controller mode to have all of my gear connected..Fantom 06 Juno X Korg SV1 Moog Sub 37 Bass station 2 FA06 and a Mininova ALL into a Soundcraft MTK22..Sometimes I'll plug the fantom directly into the Mpc and record my tracks inside and assign them to pads to make it easy to save or export out in the computer.
This is exactly why I made the video. To get feedback with other users of the same type of workflow. My question to you is when you sample into the Mpc x to the pad do you hear a difference in sound quality as opposed to tracking the Fantom directly into the Daw while using the Mpc to trigger the sounds. Because I feel like when I’m listening to my tracks on the Mpc when it has my hardware playing back through Midi the sound quality sounds better but just by a little as opposed to me sampling the hardware into the Mpc to the pad as you explained. Has that been your findings as well?
Great stuff! Liked and subscribed. Just what I was looking for. Fantom EX will be here tomorrow. Will be sure to mention you when I post my video.
Thank you so much. I got rid of mines (Fantom)I want it back now 😅
I recommend to try subwoofer with these monitors. Both Yamaha and Focals have low bass. If you produce hip hop you need a lot of bass and only sub can give that. I recommend any sub around 10 inch or more in size - like KRK S10 or if you can spend more than take Neumann KH 750 DSP. And it will never be not loud enough because subs have their own volume and crossover controls which allow you to instantly have more bass or less bass - depending on workflow.
I’m actually gonna have to do this because I feel more and more that I’m not feeling my music the way I used to when I had a smaller room
When I’m trying to do this layering zone 1,2 and 3 it seems that I can’t adjust the volume per zone individually. As soon as I change zone 1, zone 2 and 3 are changing to the same volume level automatically. Any advice?
I had that same problem. I never figured it out.
And i also got rid of my Fantom So I can’t even attempt to work on it again to help you
@@jltbk5420 it’s crazy! First time I hooked it up everything was perfect. After that I think I changed something and now I have this issue. I know it’s possible but don’t know where I went wrong… Thanks tho! What workstation/keyboard do you have instead of the Fantom?
@@roderickalbus5818if you haven’t made any patches that you want to save just factor reset it
@@roderickalbus5818 All I had was the Fantom but like I said I got rid of it and replaced it with Analog synths. I already had a prophet rev 2 at the time of owning the Fantom. But I just recently grabbed a Moog sub 25 Prophet 6 and Prophet 10. I like the sound of the prophets
Was lookin into these speakers for my setup. Appreciate the vid!
It would have been nice to hear a comparison between them
I know. It would have. But I wasn’t equipped to show that demonstration. Thanks for commenting
@@jltbk5420 Even a phone recording would have been enough to hear the nuances, i`m looking to get these 80 evo`s over my hs8`s and have nowhere to listen to them, i can only purchase from thomann .
Good honest review, informative information tnks
The longer I have them the more I love them and hate them at the same time. 😃😃
@@jltbk5420 i have to replace my Mackie XR824's imo wonderful sounding monitors the tweeters are magic, i'm leaning towards these as I love the sound of metal tweeters and I know the bottom end on these is tight
You got my dream setup. MPC X and A Fantom. Saving up.
It was good while it lasted. I got rid of both of them. Got a similar but different set up now.
@@jltbk5420why lol
@@eddiecardona1161 It was a bit redundant. I already own a mpc live, so there was no use to having the same machine especially since I don’t have multiple studios to house it. If I did that would make sense having two current gen Mpc’s. I got rid of the Fantom 6 because they offer those same operating systems as a plug in on Roland cloud. I felt that 3k could be better spent elsewhere.
Turned out pretty fire and yes talk through your process brother, look forward to hearing what You do with the other Vinyl.
funny i reached out to Akai about that pad pefrom issue. Did you reach out to akai? I think the more people who brings it up they will look into it faster.
No. I didn’t. I just plug in a midi controller or one of my synths and achieve the lower octave that way.
I Thought about the Focal Alpha 65 But went with the ADAM AUDIO A7Vs 👌🏽 DSP built in Sonarworks for Room calibration A7Vs are the Truth!!! Now the Focal Solo6 are also up their . 800$ Each monitor for the A7Vs 1600$ Was not bad at all and 3500$ for the Focal Solo6 Shalawam..
Tbh that was my 1st choice but I had a budget. When I get a dedicated studio space I’ll definitely put money where it’s needed (monitoring-acoustic treatment).
Not sure really if a proportion of the praise of the "correction/compensation" feats on various monitors seriously equals its real usability in terms of "solution" to the room and placement. Given the obvious marketing hype, these switches are there to fiddle with the monitor response to compensate for acoustics in particular. One technical fact worth consideration is, that the studio monitor is originally constructed and tuned to perform as flat as possible across the bandwidth in which it is physically able to reproduce the sound. The flat performance is crucial part here. Engaging any kind of room correction (usually via low shelf eq), or high / low trim, directly influences the original flat performance of the monitor, usually as an attempt to sort out the missing or inadequate acoustics. As much as these functions are useful, they can (and quite often are) be also misleading, when engaged. Most of the time, when one needs to "correct" monitor, the issue is the room. The prosumer market expansion lead the music gear brands to develop and offer quite impressive tools for money and quality previously unheard of. Home studio monitoring is a great example. 25 years ago, there were no 8" bass monitors of similar quality for a price the low end/mid end is offered today, not to mention the quality. Thousands of the dollars were invested into rooms and monitors back in the days, today a very good sounding monitor sounds 20% of the price. As the brands are dealing with many new customers buying various affordable monitors, (such as 8") they realized that many semi pro-sumer's preferences do not consider acoustics as vital investment, yet want buy big monitors. Acoustics do not change monitor's performance, but they affect the listener's perception, and the difference between the treated/untreated room is huge. Now without room correction function many brands could be potentially facing bad reputation, coming unjustly from the users complaining about monitor's performance, although the problem is their untreated room or wrong setup. With a bunch of a fiddles at the back og the monitor one can satisfy his "sound" taste, thinking the troubles had been overcome. The truth is, no one can cheat physics.
@@indyawichofficial1346 Everything you’ve mentioned hit the nail on the head. Treatment is the most important part of a music studio. This is exactly what I mentioned in the video before upgrading monitors put that money into treatment however my motivation for upgrading was based on my last set of 8 inch monitors (Yamaha) giving sounds they were busted. If I could do it all over again I’d buy another pair of Yamaha’s. They just sound true to the source. But I agree most of consumer studio monitors can get the job done as long as you train your ear to what the speaker does. In my experience the Krk exaggerates the low end, same as the JBL. As long as you compensate that in the mix any studio monitors would be good but they’d really shine with proper acoustics. Unfortunately I don’t have the luxury of properly treating my set up do to the room I’m using :(
And thats just it with vinyl , you get cool samples nobody used , out of those records you never heard from. Yeah online has more , but how are you gonna look for something you dont know ( the name of ) ?
That’s correct. This is what I thought was so special about ordering a mystery pack to sample from. “Never know what you’re gonna get”
This is dope
Ps yeah talk through them… you connect with the viewers more that way
Thanks for your input and I will. I wasn’t sure if anyone wanted to hear me ramble or just get on with making music.
Yeah the work around for the pad perform octave problem is, when you open up pad perform, cycle the octaves all the way up until it goes to highest and flips, then cycle back down til you get to the octave you want to be at…that’s the only way to get to the lower octaves for some reason… it’s a big they have had for like 8 months now… hope this helps
Thanks a lot

Good seeing you bro bro
Thanks man
Thanks bro!
I do the same thing.. I use my Maschine MK3 to generate 8 bar loops , then I export to mpc x and chop up.. or I just use the stems as is in mpc to finish … using them together is a dope combination for sure…
Ps i also use Studio One 😂
Dope🔥
Im sorry no one has told you what you need those speakers are too big for your space and your asking them to work full range in hiphop. That wont work you need to take those back get some 5" or 6 inch moniots and a sub and set it up so the cutoff frequency has no gaps 85 - 100hz thats how you take care of your spl problem the overload production is from low frequencies at high spl thats how you destroy speakers.
Much respect 🫡
My space is actually pretty big. But you’re right as far as treatment
@@jltbk5420 yeah it's it's because you're sitting so close to the camera. It's hard to see how far away you are from the speakers, but as long as you've got three feet or more from you and the speaker and then 3 feet from the back wall minimal then the eights are a good choice. Any less than that I still go with the recommendation of going with a smaller monitor and a sub. Especially because with room acoustics the low end is the hardest to tune properly. Moving your sub around while taking room measurements can give you a massive leap in acoustic response over the inability to move your speakers.
th-cam.com/video/bZp2_bJi3a4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2rfUYSNvFQC4ZNyR your adams were not setup correctly in your early video and your getting a narrow tweeter disruption pattern and off axis frequency cancelations in the near field when they are on their side
For some reason my fantom 0 doesn’t have an option for Slave mode.. any advice on how to sync up to record midi ?
It’s in there
If you’re on the mpc just select a midi track then on your Fantom select a sound. Make sure you’re on the corresponding midi channel. So if you’re on midi channel one on the mpc the Fantom has to be on channel one as well
@@jltbk5420 I understand that part but what I’m saying is whenever I’m in the menu to setup my midi the part where it says sync mode i only see the options to put it in internal , remote , or external…slave mode is not even an option for me ?
@@SolidKampSounds Ok I see what you mean. I never put it on slave. It syncs through usb. But I also hold shift then whatever midi channel I wanna use on the Roland
Kinda hard to explain without me seeing what you’re screen
Thank you sir!
Been trying to figure this out for a long time thank you
Try out some pure piano runs using the focals. Piano notes in the low register can cause some very obvious distortion on some focals that other instruments and full mixes don't cause.
Dope setup bro
hi mate, the price is a good point. i listened to alot of studio speakers(adam audio, krk, presonius, jbl,and so on.) at a closed room inna store called "Music Store" in cologne, germany. when i was there the focal evo 80 and evo twins and the tannoy gold 7 sounded both "better" like more warm and more full of depth than the Yamaha's. They felt 3-d somehow haha, like the sound is more around u. The Yamaha HS8 sounded not that good in that room BUT they sounded sooooo good when a friend had then a few years ago and we where listening to them. i dunno, maybe it was the setup of the speakers at the store that wasnt right. u know i like to hear alot details in my music(i listen to rnb, some pop and house stuff) but also like when the bass is hitting good, im not producing or mixing yet so i just need good, clear sound^^ So i was pretty sure imma buying the Focals, either the Evo 80 or the Evo twins but as u said, price is a thing when u pay either 299,- or 440,- for one speakers atm in euros =) i might switch my decision and either go with the tannoy, but the gold 8 then or the yamaha, if i will miss bass, i just trow in a rly cheap Mackie CR8S-XBT Sub for 200,- and i will be fine i guess. my room is only about 11 feet x 9 feet so i GUESS bass will be fine. U may say i should buy 5 or 6 or 6,5 with that small room size, but i like my music loud and alot bass and amybe moving soon to a house so^^. Maybe the tannoy are "the best of both worlds" im not sure yet haha thx for the great video!!! <3 from germany
Dat shit fire I have a mpc live &mpc 1 mpc 1 how did u do the 3parts like that
Thank you. The song (sample) that I selected had so much space without vocals so I chopped it to do 3 separate takes to alternate while changing sequences.
So if they are at the same price which would you purchase. Just sold my Focal alpha 50 evo's still in the dillema of whether upgrade to 65's or try the hs8s instead. I do think Focal alpha's soundstage and imaging is good but just cannot stand with its midrange (its a little bit reccessed and v-shape so I could not have the full picture of how my guitar sounds when I am tracking my guitar). Would you consider HS8s better at tracking guitar using amp sims(such as neural dsp's plugins)? :)
The price point is not the same. You’d pay $200 more for the alpha series same size 8 inch. IMO the focal sounds great maybe even better than the Yamaha. But for mixing I’d prefer the Yamaha just because I’m familiar with what I’m hearing. They’re flat and for the most part what you’re hearing is most accurate to what will translate in the car or ear buds. If that makes sense. If you’re asking which one should you buy over one or the other. I’d buy both and keep them to demo them against one another and make my decision that way. Return the one you’re least satisfied with. What I like may not work for you that why I say demo them. Just make sure you purchase from someone who has a good return policy.
