When the youngest of our koalas first come to Friends of the Koala, they can be a little bit distracted by the activity around them and they've never been hand fed by a human before. Supporting the koalas to learn who to feed from a syringe takes a bit of practice.
Here Liz talks us through the do's and don'ts of feeding a koala joey with a syringe. In the video she is feeding Kookie and Pala.
We take a hands off approach to caring for our koalas, the less interaction they have with humans the better so joeys don't need our hands on them for feeding.
Liz checks that they joeys are swallowing what they are taking in, keeps things slow and calm. Our koala carers allow the joey to come to them and gently put the syringe tip only to the corner of their mouth.
Koala feeding is also a good opportunity to give the koala a visual once over to see if everything looks ok with them.
