It would help a lot if u showed what brushes u r using while shading, like yeah, u mention soft brush and hard brush but they arent shown by default or the default ones do not give the same effect as yours

usually i just draw them at the same time and put a little dot for the pupils' actual directions

Alternatively, if you want to draw a perfect box, work backwards and start with a male torso. Then just erase the details.
