This video is riddled with false assumptions and bad faith arguments. You're reframing a bunch of things into an East vs. West dichotomy that doesn't reflect reality as well as conflating conflict with antagonists. This is genuinely painful to watch.
Cant do film by the rule of goldencut onli intuition will be interesting to yames joice do the animated films😂 that would be interesting like begining like dnding just watch the patch and yo hawe perfect loop of chaos after 3 loops start to see patherns repeated itself from one point of wev to another. Just drowing to infinity😂hai
cyberpunk criticizes the system by showing you how bad it could get, solar punk criticizes the system by showing you what we could have if we got rid of the system. the system is capitalism and authority
Out of all the videos I’ve seen of this Japanese storytelling framework, you’ve been the one that has explained what makes it unique and different the best.
Whats the music at 6:33 ? I know it from somewhere…
I feel like WALL-E fits under the umbrella of Solarpunk, and there really are some radical messages to it, about humans needing to leave a world where they are kept cossetted by consumerism in favor of less controlled, yet ultimately a more real, more fulfilling form of existence. It would have been so easy for the movie to do a standard "Humans need to stop destroying the planet" shtick and there are elements of that message in there, but ultimately, the story says that humans need to return to a more natural existence not because it's our job to fix everything, but for the sake of ourselves. As depicted in the movie, the Earth didn't need humans to come back and repair everything--it was already in the process of repairing itself--but humans needed to leave behind the artificial, stunted existence aboard the Axiom for the sake of their own health. Messages like these are important, especially because we need to root out eco-fascism wherever it rears its ugly head.
I'm going to throw out the book recommendation "Democratic Confederalism" and "Liberating Life: Women's Revolution", both by Abdullah Ocalan, since I saw someone else recommend Bookchin. I think both books are online for free. I'll also recommend the TH-cam video "The Communes of Rojava: A Model in Societal Self Direction" as well as the Unicorn Riot video about the YPG volunteers. The first is a great overview of how an actual solarpunk society that isn't in the Netherlands, and thus has to be prepared to defend itself against fascists and capitalists (very punk), can be organized. The second is a bit of a reality check for what that defense looks like.
While the world is being more and more this cyberpunk dystopia that was thought in the 80's people want to get escapism from it in form of Solarpunk.
A utopian vision where all are forced into a communal setting in a post capitalist world? Idk man sounds like communism to me!
Solar punk is like everything my late mother wanted to see in the world when I was young it was her dream to buy land and build an earthship on it sadly she passed before she could realize this dream I will carry this dream to its fruition I promise
Your video helped me a lot to organize my mind for writing a Ghibli themed DnD game, becose DnD is a game built only around conflicts.
You know it's funny, I've watched let's plays of all of these games and the story for all of these stuck with me, but I've never made the connection they were from the same developer.
Eboshi and Jigo are an example of those traits being flipped. They’re good people whose goals put them in direct conflict with the main character, because that’s how life actually works. Your conflicts are with other generally good people.
Solar punk is Communist propaganda in a shiny package.
You have played Disco Elysium, yes? The story of all of Martinaise, but especially the village on the other side of the water lock, reminds me of Norco quite a bit.
Yes, I'm a huge fan of DE! One of the videos I'm working on covers this game specifically
good shit good shit
Solar punk= better irl Cyber punk= makes better fiction
The video has a bit of an issue here and there, but it perfectly encapsulates the Solarpunk interpretation that I have and is trying to build. Great job! I'm glad you made this video to spread this idea
late to the party and not the most intelligent but I'll throw my hat in the ring: Solarpunk (and by extension many other forms of -punk) aren't punk because they rely on the label of punk as more of an aesthetic choice than being based on the actual ideology of punk because punk itself is a form of rebellion that shouldn't be codified; even in typing this up I'm kinda going against the idea of punk by trying to define it. Punk has long since been watered down to an aesthetic and or a genre that mantles some of the ideas of rebellion yes; but for the most part any form of media that tries to be punk isn't punk because punk itself simply is. It's people on their last dime playing a gig in an abandoned walgreens at midnight for the hell of it, it's swearing at the world because you don't fit, and laughing when it swears back. Most -Punk media is just people in the world participating in the same systems of oppression that would inevitably grind them to dust with a "dog-eat-dog" mentality and finally biting the hand feeding them the arsenic laced slop because they either have nothing to lose or nothing more to gain and want one last blaze of glory. Loved the video, looking into more -punk stuff because I like the aesthetic.
I played Unsorted Horror this year in February, and it was an experience that was stuck in my head for at least a month or two. Now watching this video, it reminded me of the way I felt playing through what these titles had to offer, and I gotta say it was way different than what I expected. I wasn't scared or anything. I was more or less surprised and, in a way, confused. Now that I properly understand what is going on, I still am surprised but no longer confused. Now my confusion is replaced with dreaded thoughts, if that makes sense. I am really happy this got into my recommendations. You really did a good job at showing and explaining what this collection of cruel and dying worlds has to offer for their inhabitants. And I guess for us the observers from another universe, far, far away from theirs. Thanks!
The two big differences I see in Western versus Eastern story telling are in general Eastern story telling trusts the audience more, and what the Japanese call Ma, or the space between. There is so much direct and specific exposition Western stories because the writer/director just do not trust the audience, to the point it is insulting in many cases. They don't trust that 'showing' will be enough for their vision to shine through. So, they beat you over the head with exposition because the gods forbid you have a different interpretation of THEIR story. Don't want to paint too wide a brush because there are some really good stories that trust the audience and give space for the audience to reflect and breath, Arcane comes to mind having just finished it. But, there is also a lot of crap like Marvel and Lucas studios who like to put spectacle before story.
Talking about solarpunk to distract us from the fact that cyberpunk is less fiction by the day (and this is bad).
Summary for myself - The conflicts are not driving the story, but the twists are - Characters grow, but don't radically change - Antagonists are rarely putting their heart into defeating the hero, and similarly, the hero doesn't fight them.
Hi! I wanted to ask if you know whether Mike Klubnika is actually from russia and still lives in russia. Making games may be difficult there these days. I know that Indika devs had to relocate to finish their game, and it was relatively tame in terms of themes and delivery. Buckshot Roulette, on the other hand, has a very risky premise and execution.
He's Estonian
@kemuri181 thanks! That means I can buy his games without the fear of supporting the russian economy in a teeny-tiny way, and that's a relief.
@@jackmama198 don't say you assumed he's Russian just because his "surname" is Klubnika... 💀
@kemuri181 kinda did 🤷♀️ Though not just that: the soviet-looking architecture in his games, the peeling of potatoes as the ultimate hell (as that is what soldiers/prisoners usually do in the post-soviet army/prisons), the overall dreary atmosphere of each game as a fact of life rather than a deviation from the norm, etc.
@@jackmama198 so what..? Have you heard about Disco Elysium..?
your videos are always food for the mind, i genuinely think these kinds of essays should be shown in schools. These are THE problems that we are facing currently and their consequences will only increase in time. I feel like education in most cases does not do enough work to raise the public awareness of environmental pollution and overexploitation of resources
7:05 ey a tree face
Solarpunk always felt uncomfortable and weirdly paradoxical and "fake" to me. One weird thing is this phenomenon of... I dunno, "Denial" and "spite" that surrounds Solarpunk? I am not talking about the "it would never work" type of denial, but the opposite: That this will work no matter what and the spite of capitalism as the ultimate evil of our time. It has this odd aura of childish and naivé "entitlement" and "moralism", that makes it seem like an utopia. But it feels more like a contrarian counter-culture reaction more than something natural. It feels artificial, something that was born in the empty space of a conceptual opposite. And I think there is a weird paradox in that the idea of "green" is being forced to be a "counter-culture" societal structuring. It's like a bonsai tree: Carefully crafted and maintained nature that's restrained and kept in line in it's small habitat. It will not grow too much, and it has to keep up the appearances. It has to look good, or else it will be replaced. It never came across as a hopeful message or view of the future, more than it came as a childish eco-jihadist utopia larp. It completely ignores that people might be greedy, how people will actually interact with the world. EVERY single solarpunk visual lacks cities. There's only few people around. It's this subliminal messaging that "we humans" are the issue. That if there was just very very very few of us, then we can live green. That our issue is our scale, and the answer is to cull it down. And if you think about it: Most cyberpunk depiction are all about overpopulation. Post-capitalism reigns supreme when people become statistics.
wtf do you know about the conflict in Israel? shelling civilians? bro you better keep on making videos about video-games and stories..
Not your bro. Sources are in the description.
Dont know how many of these Ive watched on here. Just love hearing about this amazing movie studio ♥♥♥
How does solarpunk work in a winter environment???
@@lucasmrazovic6933 another reason why solarpunk feels fake, although pleasant. It implies small sized populations, no large cities, everyone is a farmer of some sort. And yes, in winter, how do you produce energy with so little sunlight ? Where did they mine for the rare earths used to make the trillions solar panels ? And in this utopia, what do you do with the dissidents ? So many questions…
Tartarus Engine doesn't really have a twist imo. TFW the literal "Hell Machine" turns out to be _bad?!?_

@@Crow-mortis that soundtrack is as amazing as the game is, it elevated the long walks from boring to nerve wraking, and accentuated the stress of the situations every time you enter in an infected area
@@them_best It really is peak atmospheric horror. It's my favorite game and the soundtrack is just fantastic.

Phenomenal video! Loved every second of this!
Solarpunk is shit, it's really just aspirational techno-hippie bullshit, with no teeth, no analysis, no solution, it's just "hey, if we solved our social problems and suddenly technology was more like magic and we lived in a post-scarcity world, wouldn't life be neat ?". It's boring bullshit.
Solar punk just sounds boring
