Hey Bill, if I use sanded grout will it be more durable?
Hey Bill, if applied to driveway with some type of sealer will it hold?
Would have liked to have been there when it was put on the floats.
Nice one, smart
Sweet!!
In the pool very cool!!! Thanks❤
AMAZING!
saw it live, beutiful landing.
Great video. Thanks.
Used you process a few years ago and it’s still holding up great!
Are the ribs full ribs and slip onto the spar or 2-3 piece ribs attached/aligned separately? Any washout by the plans or same rib-airfoils everywhere? If you could show a bit of the plans and structures that would be nice.
That looks a great Volmer build!
Thousand thanks, you made my day !!!
Just saw this. I am amazed with your ingenuity Bill.
Great explanation. Dad did a nice job with the wing attachment points. Amazing craftsmanship. 👍
Thank you, Thank you and Thank you,
I have a pebble pool deck .. what should I do ?
Will the system be powered by the engine (alternator) or is it battery powered? I plan to put a Trig 22 in my ‘46 Champ (no engine-driven electrical system) for ADS-B Out so I’m exploring what battery to use.
I fly a glider and I use a pair of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries of 10 AH switched so that only one will be powering the system at any given time. Light weight and small in size.

What if a company claims I put the wrong account number? Can I ask them to provide the account number that was typed in?
Thank you! Mine is from a 1947 Ford 2N tractor that hadnt run in 20 years. Starter wouldnt spin Took it out of the tractor. I wondered why the bendix would not spin all the way. I thought mine was broken. No parts store was open so I sprayed it with WD40 reassembled it and put it back on. And it actually worked.
Awesome, I am glad this helped!
Charlie is the man! Good job
I’m halfway through how are you going to back cut it?

Very helpful. Your step by step process and attention to detail was of great value to me. Thank you.
Awesome, I am glad it was helpful!
A pain in the eahs is putting this lightly. And that is being conservative. Apparently I am one of those "PEOPLE" that realized the gear did not retract while trying to start a John Deere 1010 after a rod bearing change. Yeah it took me about 30 minutes to find that first spring clip...then the second...and then... Yup. The two coiled springs. Only one fell but was caught in my celled floor mat. I did work out the functioning. The fact that the engine needs to start for the bendex gear to retract/return. But was baffled as to how the outer ring needed to be positioned before inserting on the splines. Mine has 4 times more splines.(The fine splines...Thanks Oldpuck...) So I don't know if I want to pop those plugs out to replace the springs and plungers. But it's on the armature shaft back by the lock pin is where I am also baffled...a circle segment key on the shaft...what is/does that do? I appear to be missing it. And I didn't drop it...I checked my video taking it apart. ... Watched that other video. My bendex points the other way.
I think some peoples thumbs are in need of some repair.
Yes sir they can differ a bit, but the basic design should be the same.. All the best, Bill
I have done this with shim stock too. The mechanic does what's necessary to get the job done.😊
Hi Bill, great workmanship and a wonderful design. Really nice !!! - Congrats and Best Regards from Alaska! Lars
I had cf oqf 1st built from plans.the gear was operated by a power window motor going through a 3/4 threaded rod.Simple lots of grease .I weigh 215 so I took it out and put in a Johnston bar.Less weight less to fail .
???
Looks like you could launch it abd have a "wade up bar".... only in calm water! Cool project and bar.
I've been listening to Jimmy Buffett since dinner. Sad for the loss but blessed by the music and friends. This really tops it.
ow are things?-wow. this is super ~ ;)
Wow, you really fancied up that VJ-22😂
Who would buy this boat ??? With all the options available ?? 🤷♂️
Its a 48' Fountain Express, who would not?
Not sure if you'd need to bother with that last cable/bungee to lock the gear all the way down. Part of your landing checklist is going to be making sure your gear is locked in whichever position it's supposed to be in for whichever surface you're landing on anyway. The easiest way to check with the Johnson bar still there would be to push/pull on it, which would complete that last inch of downward travel, even if the wind didn't do it for you. If neither happens, I'd wager the friction of the wheels spinning up when you touch down will be enough to lock it all the way down, since they're mostly moving backwards by that point in the rotation. Of course, that'll slam the Johnson bar down into place with some authority, which is like to scare a few pounds out of the pilot, if ya know what I mean. Nice little bit of ingenuity, all things considered. Well down sir.
I'm sure you've seen or done the trick w/ spinning the bendix on a screwdriver (removed from the pinion shaft) using a wire wheeled grinder.
That will work! Should work. My Bendex points the other way.
unfortunately, the wire wheel trick didn't work on my Bendix for my plane. So I reinstalled on the plane w/ the gear extended and when the engine kicked over, it spun the drive so it retracted back in as designed. Happy ending.@@modifyman6977
this was awesome! Been looking for disassembly instructions for my drive that's off a Piper/Lycoming/Prestolite starter. It has 400 hrs in 35 years (~350ish cycles- replaced in 1987 at 857 hrs., now has 1260 hrs.) It sticks and takes 2 or 3 tries before it engages the flywheel. Everyone says to replace but I think it just needs cleaning. FWIW, Lycoming says to not use any grease, just spray silicone lube. Mine has the fine splines, not the wide ones like yours. I think the internals are just gummed up w/ west Texas dirt where it used to live before I bought it and brought to Dallas in 2021. Can the roll pin be reused?
The roll pin can be reused if it fits in tightly..
Fine Splines! That is a better terminology...I'm soaking mine in mineral spirits now but the silicone spray when reassembling sounds like an idea...since I have no graphite.
I don't have a roll pin...it's solid. @@billtabbert8632
So I’ve been trying to figure out a way to do this without going to a specialty place to buy the products. Can you just use a masonry paint over this?
Yes, no problem
I’m looking at building this plane. How long did it take you to build? Did you build it from scratch or finish it?
There are many 1/2 finished projects out there that would speed it up.. This was an aircraft that was never finished. My Son and I stripped right down to the fuselage.
Wear golf shoes walk in it.
Nice Bill. That's thinking out of the box. I like that you are able to use the johnson bar as a backup. Most likely the only emergency use of it would be to lower since if you take off and it doesn't work you could just keep the gear down for the flight and land on land. But you still don't have to waste a good day puddle jumping just because of those pesky landing gear. :) Awesome job! Now you need to get it to go 180 degrees. :) Darrell W. Volmer Club of America
Thanks Darrell! I have seen Volmers with the chain and gear and just wanted to try something different. I like the thought of a back up. I sat in mine on stands and successfully operated the gear manually , but it was definitely a two hand operation and I am not confident I could do it if I am privileged to get older.. 180° could be accomplished (or real close) if I cut the Johnson bar down to go below the the mid structural support, and modified the mechanical advantage I built to dip down into the bilge with the same curvature. I am currently relying on gravity, and then the wind generated by flight to lower the gear and this would have to be addressed if I went to 180°. In lieu of 180° I was considering constructing a vacuum infused carbon fiber aerodynamic shield that the gear would fold up into on the sides of the hull. They would weigh about 1.25 - 1.5 pounds a piece and significantly reduce the drag, become a step and could possibly be designed to aid in some low speed water deflection. If I construct these molds I will design them where these could be bolted right to the side in minutes. But you know its always about weight though. After attending Sun and Fun we have to go back to work in Toledo and the Volmer will have to sit until fall... Ironically, it will be completed today but I will be waiting on FAA paperwork for months... I am also considering designing and building molds for new sponsons because, well you know... why not... Bill
One day I will have to barrow that tool ,and we have a four blade warp drive if you would like to compare performance.
Absolutely, no problem!
