In this video I demonstrate the extremely easy prep of benzenecarbaldehyde from benzyl alcohol using (bis)pyridinesilver(I) permanganate in dry benzene. The prep takes about 30 minutes. A far superior prep of thallium(I) sulfate than anything I have shown before. Doing it this way dissolves the metal over a couple hours whereas if you just try to dissolve thallium in sulfuric acid it will take several days of heating and stirring. In this video I prepare a complex of thallium(III) iodide and rubidium iodide using thallium(I) iodide and elemental iodine. The reaction must be carried out in methanol; ethanol and other common organic solvents as well as water will decompose the TlI3 intermediate as well the final Rb{TlI4] product.
