    Guided Reading, based on cueing, has been scientifically debunked. The podcast Sold a Story made this very clear.

    • @3peaksclassroom

      @@GeorgeOu absolutely! In this context, I refer to guided reading as more targeted small group instruction. Thanks for your comment!

    • @GeorgeOu
      @GeorgeOu 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@3peaksclassroom The science says not to teach cueing or guided reading because it confuses most students, especially the ones who need the most help. The few students who can handle guided reading (whole language) can learn under any program. So the old fashioned phonics method is really what works for everyone.

    • @3peaksclassroom
      @3peaksclassroom 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@GeorgeOu absolutely! In my video I talk about comprehension strategies - which is second to the foundations of reading 👍🏻

    • @GeorgeOu
      @GeorgeOu 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@3peaksclassroom I am not opposed to other methods of teaching. My concern about "balanced" literacy is that it's not balanced, because its proponents actively hated phonics and explicit learning and spent over 40 years sabotaging phonics learning. Then only the wealthier families who can afford private tutors get their children the needed phonics. The non-phonics methods waste too much time on trying to drive a "love of reading" instead of the explicit mechanics of reading. Students need to know the how before they can learn to love, or not love reading. The love of reading is not that important and people can be functional intellectuals if they don't love to read, but they can't be functional if they don't know how to read.

    Hey! Thank you so much for this video. It was so informative! I just had a few questions. For guided reading, are the texts decodable texts for all groups? Also, when you’re working with the group of struggling readers, what kinds of tasks do you assign to the other groups? Lastly, are the main texts in the book’s modules ever used in guided reading? I teach second language learners so the main texts are difficult and all of the students have a hard time with it. How do you recommend running a class with the module story? Would you recommend a read-aloud session for that with oral questions about the genre or story elements, for example? So sorry for all the questions! I really want to give my students the best. Your advice is invaluable 🥹 thank you!

    I have subbed for about 7 years in 2 states (Missouri & Florida). Here are some of the things I have learned. 1. STAY CALM no matter what. Kids see that you are IN CHARGE and the ADULT in the room as long as you are not getting angry. 2. Be prepared for the worst by bringing a SMALL megaphone and a whistle. If kids get a bit loud and you don't need to SCREAM at them. Just speak normally into the megaphone. Once you get their attention, I tell the kids "This megaphone is kinda obnoxious isn't it! So I will just use my regular voice now." If the kids get OUT OF CONTROL, then blow the whistle! The kids will quiet down! The megaphone I use sparingly... the whistle I use RARELY. Explain to the kids that "we are getting WAY TOO LOUD and might disturb the classes nearby! so please go to your seats and if you talk, do it quietly." 3.... If one or 2 particular students are constantly causing trouble, I will talk to them one on one. I explain to them that I will put THEIR NAME in my daily report to the teacher because you did X.. Y... and Z bad behavior. HOWEVER... if you straighten out starting NOW... then I will let you watch me SCRATCH YOUR NAME OFF of that report!!! Later in the day... the kid is acting OK... and I keep my promise. If a lot of kids are misbehaving.... I will walk around the room and personally THANK the well behaved students for doing their assignment and ask them to please write your name on this list of students who are doing the assignment and NOT causing trouble! The "troublesome" kids see what is going on... and they want THEIR name on that list also!!! So I tell them, "Start doing your assignment and stop the misbehavior and YOUR NAME will go on this "good student list" also! 4.... No matter what strategies you do.... always remember that some kids will act up and you sometimes will not be able to stop them UNLESS you push that emergency button on the wall. When the administrator arrives, I give them a list of 5 or 10 MISBEHAVIORS that the student truthfully did! I try very much to NEVER push that button because administration is very busy and shouldn't be called for the minor battles. UNFORTUNATELY I cannot use some of your suggestions such as "learning kids names" because I am 69 years old and have some problems with remembering people's names. Thanks for this video, I am going to use some of your suggestions to improve my skills.

    Research has shown that children will be motivated to read a higher level if it's a subject they are interested in. Ex. I taught 2nd grade, and I had a little boy who loved airplanes. He would read 4th grade level books because he was interested in them.

      I haven’t looked into the grade 2 Ela curriculum into too much detail, but I can’t imagine they are vastly different. There is a heavy focus on phonics and phonemic instruction in grade 2 over grade 3, so there’s that piece that you would have to plan for.
