Fly Fishing a Mountain Stream with a Euro Nymphing Dry Dropper

Fly fishing with a dry dropper system on a Euro nymphing leader in a mountain stream full of small rainbow trout. Fishing with a dry dropper on a short line such as on a nymphing leader allows for better control in fast broken water, whereas in flat water fishing with a floating line will allow for a better presentation at distance. Fly pattern vs Presentation
มุมมอง 4.2K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Is the fly pattern even important?? In this video I fish with tungsten beads glued onto hooks to try and find out! In my opinion presentation is usually the most important factor, but there are definitely situations where having the correct fly pattern/size/profile/bead can make a big difference. Would you do the knot again, this time use heavy colored string and contrasting background for better visibility.
The fishing was great content. The language; from the onset, detracts from the enjoyment of the skill and experience you both clearly have.
Nice video mate
Brilliant session ! Just love those tight NZ streams. Gear question…what lanyard do you use….like the back net holder, exactly what I’d like to run / after to cross over with wet wading.
@@anthonyclark6118 cheers! Just a classic gear keeper type one, I think maybe the one I have is from Orvis

Never seen anyone use an automatic reel, seems to really serve a purpose controlling your line.
@@johnreed4962 can be for smaller fish, bigger ones it’s better with a manual one
Very nice work Ollie.
@@davidflyfisher6379 cheers!
Hi Ollie do you then just knot your tippet to the loop that you created?
@@davidreilly7907 yeah I just tie it on from there as normal
I absolutely enjoyed this fishing. Here in Wv USA, my favorite creek looks like this creek y’all fished. It has browns that get up to 28”’s on occasion but a 20” one is a big one here. I’m fishing it today and I’m hoping to catch them on dries. Thanks a ton !!!!!!
@@wvlongshooter3912 thanks! Tight lines
What a great video Ollie and that was both entertaining and educational seeing you two pro’s handle the wind on such small water. I will say, as a USA angler…those eels creep me out
@@blueridgeflyguy9551 cheers! I don’t mind the eels, but I really didn’t like the rattlesnakes in the states. I guess it’s what you are used to
Good effort landing that big one Ollie, lots of gnarly structure in there!
@@PeachyFlyFishing cheers! Need a little luck to with those ones
Good fishing boys!
Awesome fishing Ollie and Luca. Stunning browns from that stream

Hi Ollie, nice video and I/we appreciate your time and efforts in making and sharing it. What is the brand of your fly case, I tried to put into google a few guesses without success?
Thanks this is really new and helpful. Bye bye rings
@@marcelinomenendezvallejo8350 awesome!
Really helpful Ollie ! Thanks a lot for sharing your thinking behind all the tips you’ve shared here 👍🏿
Hi Ollie! Thinking of getting a euro nymphing rig for next season (northern Europe). Came across your channel this fall and are enjoying the videos! Looking at rods at the moment. Thoughts on the rod you are holding in this video?😊
@@Heinrich_Von_Schnellfahrer The rod is 11’ 2wt vision Nymphmaniac, I like it a lot for fishing for small to medium sized fish with tippet up to about 0.14mm. It’s also nice with light nymphs. Maybe a more powerful model is better if you are targeting bigger fish
@@olliebassettflyfishing Nice, Thanks! Thinking of a 10,6 3wt. They are currently 30% off for black friday, so its very tempting. I fish a large, deep river and grayling/trout between 1-2kgs (that goes for small to medium in NZ, right😅) are fairly regular so a little backbone would nice. I usually go for a 9 foot 4 or 5wt for highsticking/euro, but I`m not too keen on the faster modern rods as I find them a bit stiff for grayling. Easy to pull the hook/break the tippet when you need to move them out of heavy current.
Ace Oll 👌👍
Haha yes I got sucked in by the "1mm" tippet rings. Where did you get that strap for the c&f box, custom made I guess with the Velcro?
@@theheronknowsprimewater1035 it’s a cheap camera strap with some velcro sewn onto it
Thanks Ollie. How do you connect the tippet to the loop?
@@RuHa-s4q clinch or doubled clinch knot
Thanks mate Enjoy your channel!
Thanks - nice knot.
Great info thanks Ollie. One question. Apart from saving you from cutting back into your leader is there any other benfits over just using a knot?
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Hi Johan, I guess you mean a stopper knot? I guess it’s personal preference, but I like the connection I can make with the small loop, it very rarely breaks for me
@olliebassettflyfishing cool, I'll give it another try. What knot are you using for the tippet to the micro loop?
@@olliebassettflyfishing Micro loop mean you can do that diameter jump into fine tippets (why we use the rings I guess!). Carry less trinkets around too!! Have just always found traditional tippet to leader knots slip with these systems...tried doing micro loops at home with a bodkin....but this is cool and makes it practical on the water even for people with three left thumbs like me. Very very nice hack. Thanks mate...great camera work too btw!!

That is a world class river for Euronymphing. So much pocket water, so many big fish.
Epic angling Ollie. You really have it dialled in. Great tutorial. Really enjoyed watching how you approach each pool. Thanks for sharing.
Some stunning beautiful rivers.
Nice to see a fellow Bassett out on the river fishing! You would surely blow me out of the water as well!

Hey mate awesome video, in these warmer months where are the fish usually sitting in the water column?
When it warms up into the summer the fish start to feed more off the surface usually, although it depends a bit day to day
