OMP Hobby M4 - My first RC Heli Build Part 4 - Completed Build & Spool Up Testing.
Build is now completed and a spool up test conducted to ensure there's no obvious errors. One was spotted but not by me in the spool up test, I had installed one tail rotor blade correctly and the other not. A rooky mistake by me and eagle eyed observations of the fellow OMP Hobby face book page collectively. Disaster averted.

    Hi Pete, Seems to be spooling up fine, of course sounds very powerful on 6s!! If you don't mind me asking what + and - pitch did you go with? And for your forward collective? Because I just fly sport I usually go with 10 degrees + and - and about 6 degrees for forward collective!! If I remember correctly, I have followed Ron Lund a few times myself over the years, so I think you made a wise choice there!! The Microbeast can be a little tricky to set up the first time!! But I think that because the Gyro is moving the cyclic servos and swash in the correct directions, that is a very good sign, Good luck with the maiden flight, I hope everything goes well 😀👍

    I think they look better without the side-force generators on the wings, as they look terrible and non-scale. My preference is scale flying, not hovering and stuff- so thank you for posting this video. This fall, I'm flying down to the factory to discuss a full scale GameBird and looking forward to trying the scaled down version first.

      Thank you for your kind words and viewing my channel. I struggled with orientation when the SFG were installed. As you say not scale and not necessary, the model fly's just as good without. As you will know most 1:1 scale aerobatic planes have guides on wing tips for orientation not to help with the maneuvers. Good Luck in the fall with the full size Gamebird if its anything like its smaller brother it will be a great plane to fly.

      Hi Thomas, I left the H1 controller where it was originally mounted on the frame. I bought and installed a longer cable so I could have the GPS mounted on the wooden mounting tray in the fuselage. I bought the cable new from Ebay at a cost of £8 posted. Stop the video at 11.05 minutes played and the GPS unit is mounted on the wooden frame next to the mechanical frame. Unfortunately the image is dark and difficult to see the GPS unit but in the 30 seconds before as the camera pans round the heli you will see the H1 controller and the cable running around the frame to the GPS unit. Good Luck with the build

    Hi Pete, I'm glad to see you checked the completed parts for threadlock!! Thats a job thats so important and often overlooked, like what you did with the heatshrink on the tail pushrod, shows your modelling experience!! Just a word of caution regarding the microbeast, double check that your set up guide card matches the firmware number in the unit!! When i set my first Microbeast up I couldn't understand why the guide card wasn't matching the sequence on the unit, i then realised that the guide card that came with the unit was an earlier version!! I had to download and print the correct manual and quick guide card to match the latest firmware on the Microbeast unit!! Then it all followed the correct sequence!! All the best Pete 👍

      Hi Ian thanks for the heads up re the Beast version. I also down loaded the manual from the Align web site. I set the unit up yesterday using the manual while cross checking the steps on the card, printed manual, and heli's movements. All seems to be working as should but I will go through the steps again today checking I have the correct light sequences for the settings I require against the movements on the heli. It took me 8 hours in total and I found the process confusing at the beginning. Being locked away in the workshop without distractions helped and I got there in the end. thankfully I have an understanding wife😂👍

    I am like the fan that you added to your esc. Does it help it keep cooler? I live in the southwest in Az. . The temps here are running above 110 . I do must of my flying at sundown when it,s cooler. This is something that I should do.

      hi Thomas. Yes I would recommend adding the fan I also use 2200mah packs instead of the suggested 3 to 4000mah packs. The shorter flight time, reduced flying weight and fan all help to keep the ESC noticeably cooler. The fan plugs into a spare channel on the Rx and starts working as soon as the battery is connected. Hi Thomas, The conversion was pretty much straight forward and without any issues. A couple of pointers if I may, try to minimize weakening structure of the fuselage when installing the mechanics especially there the canopy attaches to the rest of the fuselage and the tail area. Also install a cooling fan for the ESC. As you will know the ESC run hot on Fly Wing Models anyway but runs even hotter in the confines of the scale fuselage. Thanks for watching and participating in my channel and please dont hesitate to send me a message if you require any further help. happy flying

    • @All_things_RC.
      @All_things_RC. 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Jeff, With the fan in place the ESC is slightly cooler. I have made another two precautions which is to use only 2200mah 4s lipos on hot days. The 2200mah lipo gives 8 minute flights as apposed to 20m with the 4000mah. The lighter 2200mah batteries reduced flying time, lighter weight battery and the fan unit all help to keep the ESC cooler.

    Hi how you getting on with this conversion and how are your esc,motor and batteries coping? This is something I want to try myself but I see you've used a 470 shell. After talking with suppliers at long length they have informed me that the fw bell 206 is a 470 size and the fw450 is a 450 size heli (including the fly wing airwolf fuselage as I'm informed the airwolf fuselage is for a 450 size heli). Considering this I'm wandering how well you cope with the heavier 470 fuse? I'm thinking of trying to squeeze this into a 450 size bell 206 but not the fly wing version as this is a different configuration that doesn't use a tail boom. Only thing I Don't like with the 450 bell 206 is that the tail ends by the rear rotor rather than the rear motor cover you seem to get on the 470 size bell 206.

    • @All_things_RC.
      @All_things_RC. 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi I first bought a 450 body and had to cut too much of the body to ensure the mechanics fit. I could get them in by removing the structure (flanges where the canopy meats the fuselage) but this would weaken this critical area and create a lot of vibration which would effect the operation of the flight and GPS controllers.. Stepping up to the 470 size meant I didn't have to cut any of the fuselage to get the FW450L frame in. Yes this added the weight but as yet I haven't had any issues and the stock ESC & motor cope well. I have over 100 hours flying time since the conversion. When I flew the FW450L in its original format I used 4S 4000mha lipos however now the electronics are enclosed on the 206 body I use 4S 2200mah lipos to reduce the flight time and stresses of all the extra load on the motor and ESC. I have also installed a cooling fan on the ESC.. The ESC is warm to touch but not overly hot. If you go on my channel, select playlists and then select watch all this will give you access to all the videos on this heli and the series of the conversion. Thank you for watching my channel and your input please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

    • @Tucker_T
      @Tucker_T 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @All_things_RC. Your information is so valuable thankyou so much. I'm in a different scenario to you as there is now the option of buying the fly wing 206 fuselage. It seems it wasn't available when you started your build. However after watching some vids I can see the fw 206's mechanics don't have a boom instead the rear rotor is fixed to a small carbon board coming out of the tail in the fuselage.With this in mind will the boom from a fw450 fit into/down the tail section? Or could I just fit my main body and attach the motor as per the standard fw206? I'm glad you mentioned that the 450 fuse is to small as I was going down that route so many thanks! I was told that the fw206 is a 470 size but it seems its in-between. The 450 size is 610mm long, the 470 is 842mm long but the fw bell 206 is 720mm! So do I gamble on the fly wing fuselage or just get a 470 as you have..... Using smaller mah batteries makes perfect sense too even when you buy these models the 206 comes with a 3000 as standard but the 450 comes with a 5000mah. But in saying that the airwof version comes with a 5000mah but then I'm informed the airwolf is a std v2.5 450 inside..... have a while to decide as I'm still waiting for my 450 v3 to be delivered (by 12th july) I have ordered an airwolf fuselage but I do prefer the bell 206. I'll probably end up buying a 2nd model!! Lol

    • @Tucker_T
      @Tucker_T 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @All_things_RC. strangley enough the fuselage's I've been looking at are from RC-Topmall, they look great quality for the money. I will definitely go down the esc cooling route as it seems to have been a common issue with the FW450, although I might be inclined to try and install some small fans to draw air in then a couple expelling air out of exhaust tubes.... just a thought. Hopefully my model will come with the V4 esc as they are supposed to be less vulnerable to over heating.... I'm not a 3d flyer nor do I aspire to be as scale heli's are my thing so apart from the extra weight from the fuselage I wont be working it that hard..... but thanks to you it will definitely have some form of cooling system (a case of prevention is better than the cure)😎

      Hi Jeff I flew two GPS Models on day 2 of a 3 day Geo storm, both suffered intermittent lack of control. Days two and three were the worst days of the Geo storm which effected most GPS applications in the UK. This included commercial airliners, and car sat navs among others. The H1 controller has worked flawlessly in both models up to this day and since. I wrapped the cable from the H1 controller to the GPS unit in copper foil to prevent interference. The Geo storm is the only explanation for GPS issues I faced on the day but like most electrical issues its hard to confirm this.

      @@jeffkraus1457 Hi Jeff not the war in Ukraine. I think this is something that happens in space that that effects GPS, weather etc. Over the three days of the Geo storm (as reported by news channels) we could even see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) clearly in the south of England. This is the first time I have seen them in 60 years. I can only assume this phenonemum effected the GPS usage in the UK and it was on the news with lots of reports of Commercial Airliners having to be re routed due to GPS issues.

    Pete, how are the wings held onto the fuse? I dont see sny screws or clips ?

    • @All_things_RC.
      @All_things_RC. หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Gerry Thank you for watching my video and your question. I have always taped my wings on to models using electricians tape for models under 3m wing span and have never had issues. The main reason for this is it is not possible to get your hands in to bolt the wings on. I have also found with models at this size it is easy to damage the model when removing the wing if using pin retainers. The wing root and fus is easily damaged when inserting the wedge to separate the wing from the fus. My method for taping the wings on is as follows 1, start the taping process on the top surface of the right wing leading edge, 2 work towards the trailing edge of the wing, 3, go around the trailing edge and under the right wing 4, come over the leading edge of the right wing to meet and cover where you started, 5, continue diagonally across the top of the fus to the the traling edge of the left wing 6, continue under the left wing 7, come over the top of the left wing leading edge and continue down to the trailing edge to meet at the point where you came across the top of the fus. What is important with this method is to ensure the tape is overlapping the wing and fus on all areas and and be continuous on all steps above. Dont stop, cut.and start again.

    Awesome flying buddy. Keep practicing in idle up 1 as this mode has a fixed head speed wear as normal mode doesn't. It's way easier to control in idle up 1 my friend. I'll hopefully put a video up wensday night of a flight with my m2. I'm now very confident in flips rolls and even steady inverted flight. I can hold inverted for a full battery now. Again well done mate your coming on really well. 👍🏻👌

    Nice Model! Since you are on two blades (EC145 uses 4 blades) and tail on the right, the setup is similar to most common RC heli mechanism. you would have got along with any flight controller, offering self leveling and panic rescue. Don`t mind, you will calm down, get used to it and want even more. Keep it up and fly safe. Thanks for sharing!

    • @All_things_RC.
      @All_things_RC. หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for leaving your comment. The mechanics are indeed from an Align Trex 550 and therefore the set up is therefore as is. I bought the heli second hand in this configuration including a GPS controller. I will leave it in this set up until I get proficient at flying RC Helis, with standard flybarless controllers, once I have I will convert the EC145 to true scale. At least as the EC145 is I will be able to comfortably fly the model.

    • @All_things_RC.
      @All_things_RC. หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the advice. I have flown over 100 Flights with the setup as was and 8 flights since without issue. I believe that the loss of GPS was caused by the Geo storm that happened over three days. This incident happened on the second day of the three day storm. In and around the UK there was 100s of issues where GPS was being used including full size aircraft, cars, mobile phones etc. I also I had alot of vibration on the vertical fin which could have affected the operation of the Heli. If the problem re-occurs I will put the GPS outside the fus.

    How do you calibrate the esc? I cant get mine to take off. Flyfun 160a

    • @All_things_RC.
      @All_things_RC. 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi are you flying from grass? As you may have seen on my channel and other YT videos the early models were very underpowered. Calibrating the ESC is as follows. Switch your tx on. If you have a motor kill set ensure it is deactivated. Put the throttle stick to full. Switch on the model. The esc will beep twice. Immediately after the second beep lower your throttle stick to bottom position. The esc will now go through the normal start up procedure of beeps. Once the esc has completed the beeps switch the model off leave the tx on. Re start the model and you are good to go.

      I was concerned about the weight and wing loading and it effects on landing. The model has to be flown down, forget cut and glide. You will be punished with a bouncy landing if you slow it down too much. Thanks for the comments on the site, we have been there for over 30 years, however the 200m walk from the car park puts allot of people off flying with us.

      This had crossed my mind. The only damage was to replace the blades and a good look over the model found everything in good condition. I carried out a re calibration on the tx and H1 unit. I flew here Saturday and the same thing happened with intermittent GPS signal. I managed to land with no damage. Saturday was the hight of the Geo Storm. Maybe it was this. I will have another good look over the heli, re calibrate and try again.
