Computer Crime Cop Reviews Hacker Movie War Games
Inspired by reviews by Watch It For Days - reviews of Columbo television series.
Welcome to my review of the hacker movie WarGames. I can provide a unique perspective on the movie because as a computer crime cop in the 80s I chased after hackers committing crimes.
I was a sergeant in the theft division of the Austin police department where I investigated all computer crimes reported. This was a new thing for the department, I had free reign as nobody understood what I was doing. It was just a bunch of good old boy cops around me. I attended Austin community college and took every computer science class I could so that I would be better at the investigations. Texas had no computer crime laws at the time and eventually I worked with senators and state representatives to craft chapter 33 of the Texas Penal Code entitled computer crimes. Here’s a couple of the cases that I got into.
First I set up a sting bulletin board, one of the first in the nation. A bulletin board was simply an electronic message board, a rudimentary email and file exchange system that people could dial into with their home computers and a modem. Think America Online. People could post public and private messages, play online text based games, and exchange software programs - usually pirated games. I got an IBM PC computer and a phone line at the police department and set up my bulletin board called the Underground Tunnel. But how could I get away with an obvious police dept phone number? The University of Texas at Austin police gave me a dorm room phone number and arranged for that number to be call forward to my number the so I could pretend to be a UT student. The purpose was to just monitor what was going on in the bulletin board world, and to see if anybody would offer stolen software or credit card numbers or anything like that.
Calling long distance was expensive. A big problem therefore was with war dialers because they were attacking Western Union’s Metrophone long distance calling card service. Armed with valid calling cards the hackers could attack computers in California while others stood by pay phones in housing projects and sold long distance call time to immigrants wanting to call home - usually Mexico & Latin America. I took an Apple ][ computer onto the Texas House of Representatives floor and demonstrated a war dialer hacking Western Union (with their consent) in support of the proposed computer crime bill.
The data center case mentioned was with Continuum, a company that leased life insurance programs to sales companies using actuarial software called Life 70. Thomas Groom, their data center manager stole the software and their client database. He bought a used IBM mainframe computer and negotiated an office space lease with all bills paid. The computer used more electricity than the cost of the monthly lease. His plan was to steal clients away by offering services at a steep discount. But the first client he approached ratted him out. I searched his business address and his apt, both of which were cleaned out. But in his apartment he left a single piece of paper in a trash can under the kitchen sink. It was a storage unit contract! I hit that and found all the stolen software and charged him with felony theft.

Colonoscopies Save Lives

I didn't get a colonoscopy when my doctor recommended it. I waited a year because COVID made elective procedures challenging to schedule. That gave the tumor time to grow and metastasize into my lungs. Instead of a 45-minute procedure to get scoped to snip out any polyps, I'm on a grinding two-year battle with full-blown cancer. Don't procrastinate! If you're due for one, GET IT! It's painless ...

A better look at the catch Butch Johnson made against Denver! Going frame by frame Butch caught the ball and held it firmly between both hands on about the 1 yard line. His momentum carried him over the plane of the goal where it became a touchdown. Nothing on the ground after crossing the plane applies, as it normally would have had it occurred in the field not involving the plane of the goal ...

Even to us non-Cowboys fans the shift has always had an amazing look. In unison the players crouch to rest their forearm on their thigh, stand up, then put their hand on the ground. It's a great nod to a *then* great franchise. Before the salary cap there were five offensive lineman who made over a million dollars a year and four of them played for the Cowboys. America's Team is one of the all-time best marketing phrases.

By rule, this was not a catch in 1977. The 1977 rule stated the following: "A Player is in possession when he has held the ball long enough to give him such control as to enable him to perform any act common to the game." And later: "A Catch is made when a player inbounds secures possession of a pass, kick or fumble in flight." The requirement for two feet was addressed in an Approved Ruling. Please note that the player was not required to perform an act common to the game; he was required to hold the ball long enough to perform such act. The key words in the sentence are "long enough." The phrase "long enough ... to enable him to perform any act common to the game" was an expression of time. The expression of time has changed on several occasions since 1977, not always for the best. The 1977 two-feet requirement was interpreted to include any other body part that touched the ground. Johnson's elbow touched the ground, so he fulfilled the first two requirements for a catch: control of the ball and a body part on the ground. Did he hold the ball long enough? It's pure judgment. Most people don't think so.

He never had control of the ball, the ball was moving the entire time, and he quickly dropped it. It wasn't a catch today, it wasn't a catch in 1977, and it wasn't a catch even in fantasy land, which is where this poster and some of the minions chiming in reside at.
