Mustard Seed Homesteading
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ก.ค. 2023
Hi my name is Megan! I love gardening, preserving and cooking from scratch with more endeavors as I continue. I’ve committed myself to learn the skills that have been lost these last couple of generations and not only to teach and pass them on to my family, but to share with as many people as possible. And that someone like myself who had no background or education in homesteading or gardening or anything preserving that if I can do it, you can do it!!
So welcome to Mustard Seed Homesteading! And I look forward to taking this journey with you all as a suburban homesteader. And my hope is to encourage and inspire you to learn, grow and persevere all things homesteading! 😊🌻

I am using leaves in winter. In the summer i love my mowed grass. It dries quickly and then weeds do not have a change. It becomes like a carpet on the soil cause it hardens while drying. So cool.

Hi! And Welcome! Glad you are here!! 🤗
Absolutely nothing negative or disrespectful meant: why are you growing potatoes in your greenstalks? I’ve only even seen people grow potatoes in-ground or in deep raised beds since they need tons of space. If it’s for mobility, don’t you have metal rolling raised beds? Same question for onions and garlic.
Hi! That’s a great question, I choose to grow them in my greenstalks because of the versatility and the success that I have had growing them in there. I also love the space that they save vertically as opposed to horizontal. When limited with space this is a great option to grow potatoes even if it’s a few pounds. I do agree that potatoes need space but I love to experiment and try new things especially when it comes to saving space. I do plan to try another method of growing potatoes, not just in the greenstalks, but I have not done that yet. I have also grown potatoes in very large grow bags, and I found that I had more success in the greenstalks. And with regards to onions and garlic, I had wonderful success with growing them in the greenstalks because they had their own individual space. I do grow onions in my raised beds too, and I planted some garlic in my raised beds as well, but with the greenstalks you can grow a tremendous amount of onions and garlic in a small space. And because I did have success growing them in the greenstalks that’s why I choose to continue to grow them in there. My largest onions and garlic have been from my greenstalks, it was super exciting to harvest. I hope this helps and I appreciate your questions. 😊
@ Thank you for the reply. I found your channel recently and I’m OCD so I have to start watching from the beginning and work my way to current and if you had addresses this in a more current video sorry I a haven’t seen it yet. I love your setup, I am green with envy of your greenstalks, I want one of the original and newer versions but haven’t been able to afford them yet so my family is making collecting funds toward them my birthday and Christmas gifts. Fingers crossed I can get one this year (or early next year).
@ Well I’m so glad that you are here! Thank you! 😊 And it’s ok I hope that my videos are helpful and please feel free to ask questions I would be happy to answer them. And I know what you mean I have had to buy these overtime and every single one of them I made sure they were on sale with a coupon because they are definitely an investment. I do have a coupon code for $10 off $75 or more if you want to use it when you do purchase one, and the best time is to buy it with a sale too so it’s double the savings. I will say to they are pretty tough because I had one fall over and it didn’t break. Another thing is, I love inexpensive ways to garden too, and I did a whole budget bucket video where I collected free buckets from the grocery store, that was one of my favorite projects to do. Have a blessed day! ❤️😊
I dont know if you have realized but all the videos that I have watched from you so far are only playing in left headphone, other videos are fine. Just letting you know so you can fix the audio problem.
Thank you for letting me know. When I have played them they have played back ok, but I can double check. Thanks.😊
My cone flower same and its almost a year old 😢
I know me too 😢 I don’t get it especially because the green leaves look so healthy! 🤷♀️
Hello Mustard, so beautiful your video and you garden, my name is Yuni from Indonesian 😊
Hi Yuni! And welcome!! Thank you so much!!😊
Hi Megan. What soil do you use in your Greenstalk planters? Our plants were tiny for our first try and I think the soil was too heavy. We love your garden; very similar landscape (slopes & hill) to ours. Happy Growing!
Hi!! 😊 And thank you! I use Baccto soil it is my favorite. I also use organic Kelloggs from Home Depot now I haven’t used that in the greenstalks, but I have used it in my bags and my buckets and that works well also. Happy growing to you too! 😊
Wow at the peppers and green beans! It’s fun isn’t it?!💚
Thank you! ❤️ It is sooo fun!!! 🤗
Those towers are so cool! It's like a big challenge to figure out whats most benifical to grow in them🤔 khole rabi? Or turnips might be interesting
I know I really like these! I wound experiment and see what works best for you. So far I enjoy growing strawberries, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, and garlic in them. I’ve grown broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, and those all do very well too. 😊
Wow what a good idea if you have a small gardening space but also only few people in Africa who can afford them they are beautiful. Me I dumpster dive for my gardening containers.
Thank you and I completely understand, I have had to buy them over time they are definitely an investment. I actually have a video I did on collecting free buckets from the grocery store with a break down of everything that I spent. I will add it here I really enjoyed that project. I love to find ways to garden for free or inexpensively to. 😊❤️ th-cam.com/video/HacQkg_HYwU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6B_FjwHEZCJUQsTP

Hi! And Welcome!! So glad you’re here!! 😃
@@MustardseedhomesteadingThank you. I’m wondering what your planting tool is called and where you got it? It looks amazingly useful.
I always thought you had to sprout them first , good to know I could just pot them up . Thank you
Your welcome! I did let them sit in my garage so that they sprouted a little bit and then I planted them but my follow up video to this where I harvested them, I shared how the turmeric was difficult to grow and I had to plant that more towards the surface. I hope this helps. 😊
Wow fantastic harvest! Can you tell me when you planted the ginger? What month ?
Hi! And thank you!! 😊 I planted my ginger right at the end of March but I’m going to try next year to plant it a little bit earlier and maybe even leaving it in my garage to get a head start.
Tremendous ❤❤❤ Joe to do it?🌷😁
Thank you!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Definitely my fave time of year to garden. I love your set up❤
Hi and welcome!! Me too fall is so relaxing to me!! And thank you!!❤️
Your excitement is palpable, friend. What a wonderful accomplishment! Did you get the ginger and turmeric you planted from the store?
Thank you friend!!! 🥰 I purchased the turmeric from a farm in Florida and the ginger I purchased from Azure Standard the company that I do my hauls from. You might be able to find a local farmer by you that sells turmeric, buy a couple of pieces and then you can start growing those and then from those pieces you grow more each year. I hope this helps! ❤️😁
What a beautiful dahlia! Do you remember the name and where you purchased it? I’m curious on how you prepare or process your green beans, peppers, and tomatoes 🍅! Maybe you can do a cooking video and share some recipes!😊 Thanks for the beautiful garden tour! Its such a joy to have a long growing season like we do here the South! Blessings from Bama!
Thank you!! I love dahlias now they are so beautiful 😍 I don’t remember the name of them, but I did buy them from Costco. I also bought peonies, but they never grew in the smaller pots next to the dahlias unfortunately. And that’s a great idea. 😃 I should show how I use all of this food. My green beans and peppers I just chop and freeze but my tomatoes I make salsa, but I might make spaghetti sauce too. I’m not sure yet, but I should share with others how I use this food especially when I harvest a lot! Thank you for that idea!! And I absolutely agree, I am so grateful for the long growing season in the south! Blessings to you too!! ❤️
Uh-oh! I bought hard neck and soft neck! I’m going to plant them both and see how they do! Such an informative video! Thanks you for sharing! Blessings from Bama ❤
@@BamaGirl978 It’s ok!! Definitely plant both and experiment!! Hard neck might do well since you’re a bit more north of me!! Now just FYI hard necks will grow scapes in the spring so just cut those off so the bulbs can fully grow and you can eat those too!! I’m so glad this was helpful for you! Blessings to you too!! ❤️🥰 Your welcome and thank you!!
I am so happy I watched this and looked more into Azure I thought it was a local co op around Alabama!! They are EVERYWHERE!! I am going to sign up there is a drop location 20 minutes from us!! Great video!! Thanks Megan. Of course the first item in my cart was the ice cream for John. He was watching with me 😂 do you automatically get the 25$ when I use the link attached?
Hi! I am so happy you like Azure!! They are such a great company with great products!! I’m definitely going to share on my next video that they’re all through out the country, I did not think to say that so I’m glad you mentioned it. 😊 Their ice cream is delicious!! You both are going to love it!! 🤣 And yes, if you use that link, it does bless us with $25 as a credit towards our next order but once you become a member, you can then get your own link and share that with your friends and family. I love that Azure has that program for members! 😃
I so dislike when I start watching a video, and 2 minutes into the video it becomes very apparent it is a promotional video….just add the word promo in the title, so people can make the choice if they want to watch the video or not. You forgot to mention Azure is very expensive compared to other sources to buy bulk organic foods online
Hi! This is in no way a promotional video. I truly enjoy purchasing from this company and I want to share that with others. If you feel that way then please don’t watch because you are saying something about me and my channel that is not true. You do not know me, and my heart is to truly share with others products and companies that I believe in. If there are other companies that are less expensive then by all means go and shop from them. Please do not say things about me that are not true.
That was not a promo video. That’s one of the bonuses of this channel is being able to share helpful information. For this company to support local and small businesses is amazing. I am a member of on online organic grocery store that delivers monthly to our home and when I compared prices for some of the same products Azure Standard was actually less expensive. Eating clean and healthy is not cheap period. That’s why we don’t eat out because that’s actually more expensive and you are getting basically poisoned at the same time.
Wow so much negativity for no reason🤔 Maybe you aren't aware but Azure Standard is a pretty well known company in the homesteading, natural minded homemaking, and even prepping communities here in TH-cam land. A simple search before you decided to accuse a stranger of being underhanded would have yielded a TON of Azure Haul videos🤷♀️ They are popular and really helpful to people wanting to discover products and decide quantities in their own Azure orders. Anyone who joins Azure(which is 100%free of membership fees) receives a code after their first order that they can then share with WHOEVER they want to. The code gets the person 15% off their first order. You stated that there are other companies with better prices on bulk items..that may be true in some areas but i know in my particular area that isn't the case due to shipping rates. If I do find a better price on something of equal quality I simply buy it from there if I choose. Showing and talking about something you spent your own money on isn't a promotional video...do better please in the future and just keep strolling if it really bothers you that much.
@@kimberlysmith673 VERY WELL SAID!! Thank you! ❤️

How do you use turmeric daily?
@@sweetgreengoddess Hi! I use it in my shakes every morning. 😊
I just pulled one tumeric yesterday and she was huge! The plant was trampled by chickens and I was testing to see size. Im gonna leave my tumeric and ginger for a few more weeks in 6b NE TN. I've been using frost covers and heated greenhouse is going over top.. I may get even more time in the ground with these babies. This is my first year growing them in the ground and I'm impressed with the size of the ginger plants, the turmeric plants look small, but the biggest rhizomes i've grown yet
Woo Hoo!! I love it!!! ✋🏻🤚🏻 “high five” Congratulations!! 🎉 And that is such a great idea with the frost covers and heated greenhouse!! Thank you so much for sharing how it’s growing and your experience so far with growing them and in your zone. I’m really big on trying things even when they say it won’t work or it will be hard to do because we never know unless we try!! If you can, let me know how it goes once you harvest everything. I would love to know!! 😃😃
Ok. I need help. I CANNOT get turmeric or ginger to grow. I to use it daily. HELP
Hi!! I completely understand! I had a difficult time growing turmeric at first. But then I figured out a way to have it start growing, in the short there’s a link to my harvesting of ginger and turmeric and what I learned about growing it. I’m going to leave a link to that video as well as a video that I did months ago with regards to planting ginger and turmeric. I also plan to do an another video showing how I plant my ginger and turmeric after what I have learned in this last year. I hope this helps! 😁 th-cam.com/video/n_x9Q35Fcu0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=EhPAa3U80aaFddgK th-cam.com/video/LeUALQaQkTE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ckzFc0l3ZFocF2HE

Hi Tanya!! I will put a link right here and it’ll take you to the green bean that I think you’re talking about. I purchased them from MIGardener. migardener.com/products/maxibel-haricot-bean?_pos=1&_psq=maxi&_ss=e&_v=1.0 I hope this helps! 😊

Hi! Thank you! They were so easy to grow, I highly suggest you grow both. You will be so happy that you did, and then keep a few of those pieces and regrow them the fallowing year and hopefully you will never have to buy them again! 😊
