Teach your son to be Dangerous (a poem)
Teach your son to be a dangerous man.
When he’s in elementary school, teach him to respect girls,
Remind him that “boys will be boys” is an excuse for bad men.
Let him join cheerleading if that’s where his heart lies,
And teach him the importance of finding what he loves.
In middle school, teach him to fight with more than his fists,
To stand tall even when his heart is cracked open,
Let him know it’s not weakness to let his tears fall,
And love is never something owed, only freely given.
In high school, teach him to pick up a bouquet on Valentine’s,
Not just for a lover, but for a friend,
Because that simple act will knock the world off its feet.
Teach him his heart can be soft, even when the world says otherwise,
And when they tell him "don’t," you remind him, “But what if you let?”
And even when he’s grown, teach him to take a hit-
Teach him strength in silence when his mother’s in the fight,
Make him fear the consequences of disrespect,
Let him see in her eyes that the battle’s never about him vs. her.
Don’t raise him to know just manly words,
Raise him to know kindness is strength, never weakness,
Raise him to understand equality like he knows his own name,
Raise him to speak kindly of the weak, the old, and the stronger.
And maybe my daughter won’t need to arm herself for survival in the dark,
She won’t have to fight her darling with her heart locked in fear.
But she’ll know her worth in ways that leave hurt behind,
She’ll show the world how to kill with love,
Because love-real love-is the most dangerous weapon you can hold.
And tell him to die knowing love-
That will make him dangerous enough to change the world.
