Backpacking and dry camping the 27-mile length of the Sandia Mountains outside Albuquerque, New Mexico in the spring. We survive a storm and mild dehydration and enjoy the mountain range that is close to home.

Enjoy this peaceful backpacking trek southbound on a small portion of passage 19 (Reavis Ranch) and all of passage 18 (Montana Mountain and Reavis Canyon) in the Western Superstition Mountains. Happy New Year! All last year I would see the South Sandia Peak as I drove around Albuquerque - calling to me - reminding me I still had not seen it. It was a LONG grueling 13.5-mile day with over 4500 ft of elevation gai...

Lake Peak - but afraid of heights! Santa Fe, NM

This hike did not go as planned, but at least the fall colors were beautiful. There are two ways to Lake Peak - on top of a narrow ledge with scrambling and drop offs on both sides, or on a lower route with steep drops on one side and no scrambling. I am no rock climber; I have a serious fear of heights. I thought I could work on that during this hike - how did it go? Comment with how you handl...

    Great video of this beautiful mountain range. I've always wanted to do this same trip. So far, I've only done overnighters in the Sandias but will definitely add a multi-day trip to my list. I actually camped recently at your day 2 camp, awesome spot. Thanks for sharing.

      That is a great spot to camp! I am glad we took 2 nights - anything less would have been a suffer-fest. We went the second weekend in June, and, if we were to do it over again, we would go a few weeks earlier or sometime in the fall when the highs were in the 70s or low 80s at most (and get the fall colors!). Also, if we do it over again, I think we would cache water 5 miles in, then 5 miles south of the crest, then near campsite 2. Because of all that prep work you really have to be committed! Glad you enjoyed the video. :)

    I loved your video. I miss those beautiful mountains! We lived in Albuquerque for 13 years. A friend of mine and I traversed the Sandias in one day (on the summer solstice), about 25 years ago. That hike was one of the hardest things I have ever done. We hiked from the North to the South, and finished right at sunset. We live in NV now, but Albuquerque and the Sandias hold a special place in my heart! 🌄❤

    I have a bad fear of heights that seems to come and go depending on the situation, but at its worst it can be physically debilitating. I think the best things I have learned for managing it are to take a break, giving yourself time to think about and rationalize the situation, and to focus on what you can control, your handholds and footholds, the present and actual danger you may or may not be in, which is usually not as bad as your brain wants you to think it is.

    • @seekingthefreelife5914
      @seekingthefreelife5914 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That makes sense and thanks for sharing. I also notice I have had far fewer moments of being paralyzed by fear at a drop than I was before that hike, so it does seem like exposure reduces the fear. You are right, when it happens the brain (and whole body) is just overreacting. Thanks for the tip!

      You might be in luck this year! My husband and I stayed at the campground on 9/30 and the leaves weren't changing yet (9k elevation), but that is lower elevation than the aspens in the video which are a good 6-8 miles in and 10-11k elevation. (The video is from 2022). If you don't want to do the whole loop you can do the Indian Creek trail to the Bear Mountain lookout which might have the good Aspen views now. The campground is closed now, but the hiker lot might still be open. Good luck and if you go please tell me if you caught the good fall colors. Cheers!

I never got the views I wanted on my hiking videos, so I got discouraged and now focus on the moto trials videos. Making the hiking videos is a lot of work, setting up cameras, walking back and forth, etc. However, yours are very nice and I wish you the best of luck in growing an audience.

Not knowing how long we would be staying in Gardener because of the flooding....it worked out well for us. However, once the sheriff worked a way out for people once the water covered roadway was no longer water covered, we left. What an adventure that was!
