    We tried 100 Easy Lessons, but my children ask "why" certain letters make certain amounts and why they make multiple sounds. For this reason, as well as dyslexia, we stick to Orton Gillingham based reading programs. Tried LOE and love it, but one of my sons doesn't and it's so intensive teaching 2 different levels and 3 other older kids. This year I purchased OPGTR and Reading Lessons Through Literature to see which would fit our needs better. For a more gentle approach, I'm leaning towards RLTL and combining my boys.

    We are using The Ordinary Parents’ Guide to Teaching Reading for two kids so far and love how simple and effective it is. My oldest just started 1st grade and we are on lesson 190. We’ve been using it for 8 months. It was so hard at first and now she’s doing multiple lessons a day. My 4.5 year old is on lesson 80 (she was eager to start) and we are now slowing way down and spreading each lesson over a couple of days. You don’t have to use the letter tiles and index cards. We only did a few times and it just didn’t seem necessary so we stopped. We just stick a post-it note on any lesson that is challenging (per the book). The ‘two review and one new’ technique seems to work. We’ve added used decodable readers from eBay like the ones that go along with All About Reading, Christian Liberty Nature Reader, MFW Bible reader, etc. for additional practice. We love this program! It’s so plain and simple. My kids get distracted with too many colors and pictures. This allows us to learn and move on.

    I recently helped my best friend's 16 year old daughter complete her online school. She had done almost none of it & it was due in 2 weeks😂 She had recently moved and was traumatized by her parents divorce and was going to blow her straight A transcript. I stepped in and literally did every class myself - i was shocked at how much bs it was. No kid is going to remember any of the junk i learned in those classes. It was boring and dry. And a lot of it was inaccurate or poorly taught. This eye opening experience showed me that i should stick to home schooling.

    I’m in Texas as well. If I try out the virtual schooling like K12 or Connections Academy: will it be hard to pull them back out of that public school system to go back to homeschooling? Because I’m homeschooling my 3 & 5 year old now but struggling to come up with my own curriculum. And how do I find other homeschooling families

    We haven’t had any problems with the letter sound “hints” in 100 easy lessons so far. As a separate activity for learning long vowels, my daughter marks words with dry erase marker to determine which vowel makes the long sound and which vowels are silent - I have her cross the silent ones out. So she understands that some letters are silent in words and accepted that explanation of why some letters are small in the 100 easy lessons book. We also practice reading for 5-10 minutes a day with Bob books and other readers that don’t have all the sound hints and she doesn’t have any issue with the normal print. She does get a bit hung up on different punctuation marks but I just tell her to relax and not take them too seriously and I will teach her what they mean later. 😅 I do feel like 100 easy lessons puts a lot of emphasis on memorizing common words which isn’t necessarily a bad thing and helps my daughter read more quickly, but she is really good at memorizing them and slacking a bit with sounding them out. I’m wanting to start in one of the middle lessons of ordinary parents guide after we finish 100 easy lessons to hopefully get her more help with understanding spelling rules and sounding things out.

    Thanks for the flip-through! We loved their books on economics but hesitate to get a history book as a multiethnic homeschool--- nearly a year on, do you feel the Tuttle Twins history volumes fairly represent the nuance of and contradictions present during the formation of our laws, states, and culture? I took AP and honors classes and recall slavery being about 2 weeks out non contextual info that was rarely connected to other events worldwide.

    I wanted to add that I think there is a huge part of psychological impact when it comes to labor beginning and progressing. As soon as I knew my doula was on her way, labor hit hard and I lost my plug. Lol I guess I relaxed enough to give it the energy.

    I have 10 babies. My last was unassisted home water birth. He was 2 days past due 😅 I totally get the waiting those last weeks part. I could tell in your video of the supplies you were close to labor. I ended up doing reflexology for my feet and then relaxed the next day and then labor kicked in. Less than 5 hours and he was born. I think it is important to get a good rest in right before labor takes off. It works to prep the body too! Love the supplies video too. I have 5 girls 5 boys. I love hearing birth stories no matter how many I have been through, seen or heard before. Oh and I am for sure doing a "honey to do list" next time. 😂

      I know since I birthed on my own I also just put all my trust in God and felt heavenly presence in the room when he was born. Both my mother and baby's dad's mother have already passed away and I did not feel alone. It was the most beautiful experience, especially having 5 of my children in the room at delivery time.

    I was curious how cc was going for ur son? We are trying to decide if cc is still a good fit for us as we begin the challenge years. Do u feel like challenge dives deep enough? We have been told it’s all surface level and that it’s so much they don’t have time for any electives etc

    • @AmongStouts
      @AmongStouts 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a couple of video updates out that talk about this. In short, while there are many great things about Challenge, and my son has done very well with the program, we have made or are making some substitutions/omissions to the program and doing things a little differently. I will likely do a full video on all of the changes we made, and why… but for now, in my “let’s talk classical” video, there’s much of what’s going on in that video! I do agree that Challenge seems to be a mile wide and an inch deep. My son and I are finding that much of what he’s doing is busy work and time wasted because of their process, when in reality he’s ready to move on to the next level/book. A lot of what they do seems impressive, but it’s on the surface.

      @@dawnhankins6139 I’m glad that was helpful! There’s a few layers to what I’m working through as far as challenge and as I learn more about the classical tradition and education and how I want that to look in my homeschool. Please don’t be sorry, I understand completely that life is busy for homeschool mamas! I truly value and appreciate the time that many of you spend to watch even 1 video of mine. @@AmongStouts in ur honest opinion do u feel u will continue to do cc?

    • @AmongStouts
      @AmongStouts 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dawnhankins6139I’m honestly not sure. This is something my husband and I have had many discussions about and we continue to pray for the Lord’s guidance on. I have seen CC work for many families from foundations through challenge and it really is so dependent on it being a good fit or not, my biggest advice would be to go sit in on a Ch A class and even other levels if they’re available on your campus. Also, get a catalog and take a look at what middle school and high school will look like, what curriculum is used, the books being read to get an idea of it being a fit or not, then pray for guidance from the Lord. He will lead you where it’s right for your family.

    My question, is how do you grade for concepts or understanding. Does this curriculum have questions at the end of each chapter or anything like that

    • @AmongStouts
      @AmongStouts 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These books don’t come with all of the worksheets and tests, but they are available to print online. I don’t quiz/test my kiddos, we read and take in information and through conversations I know my kids are understanding material.

    Great picks. We use R&S for reading and I've heard they're very similar. We like to take a break here and there to read novels as well. My youngest is 7th grade so always fun to see curriculum picks around that age.

    Crazy question - do you think you could teach from the themed books without completing Structure and Style, first? My daughter also resists writing and doesn't like having to come up with a top. I thought she would be more interested in the themed programs.

    • @AmongStouts
      @AmongStouts 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, when we do it with CC, none of our kids have gone through the Structure and Style program.. the “structure and style” is taught throughout the theme books. I would recommend doing the webinars and/or streaming the teacher trainings though so you can properly teach the program. I believe the S&S full programs have the DVDs or streaming teaching directly to the child, you don’t get that with the Themed programs, you’ll have to teach the concepts.
