“The prefix over attached to ‘excitability’ serves to indicate that the reactions of excitation are over and above average in intensity, duration, and frequency.” Dabrowski, 1996, p. 7, (Multilevelness of Emotional and Instinctive Functions).
"Making multilevelness the central concept in the approach to development means that we have to apply it to every phenomenon under scrutiny. It means that we are using a new key, or paradigm, with which to approach human behavior and its development. It now becomes less meaningful to consider, for instance, aggression, inferiority, empathy, or sexual behavior as unitary phenomena, but it becomes more meaningful to examine different levels of these behaviors." Dabrowski, 1996, p. 10, (Multilevelness of Emotional and Instinctive Functions).
“Discovering in ourselves higher levels of development, higher tendencies, and sensitivities, we simultaneously create them.” Dabrowski, 1994, "The Heroism of Sensitivity," an interview in Advanced Development Journal.
"Do not run from yourself but conquer yourself!" P. Cienin, 1972, p. 40, (Existential Thoughts and Aphorisms).
“Movement from “what is” to “what ought to be” opens a channel for resolution and direction of developmental tensions. When this channel is not open, as in unilevel disintegration, the tensions lead to severe psychosomatic illness, psychosis, or suicide.” Dabrowski, 1977, p. 43, (Theory of Levels of Emotional Development, Vol. 1)
“Crises are periods of increased insight into oneself, creativity, and personality development” Dabrowski, 1964, p. 18, (Positive Disintegration)

    Kids/adults with conduct disorder can also be gifted... yes? Prisons are full of them (many 2e AND with heavy trauma histories). Was the kid also assessed for 2e? Also curious if the kid who tested at 105 have any learning challenges at school? Was this child 2e? Was that considered and tested for (i.e. auditory processing, visual-spacial challenges, dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyscalcula, ADHD etc.)? Just curious? Thanks.

    • @dabrowskicenter
      @dabrowskicenter 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, of course, people with other diagnoses like conduct disorder can also be gifted. The child I mentioned in this video was indeed assessed for 2e, and there had been previous assessments that factored into why it was a compelling example for me at the time (although not so clear now, years later). What I didn't mention here but thought about later is how many messages I've received from teachers and clinicians over the past couple of years thanking us for bringing to light the fact that OE is not only for the gifted. People regularly express gratitude for our efforts to open up this non-pathologizing perspective beyond those who can be identified as intellectually gifted. They see OEs clearly in their neurodivergent children, students, or clients who aren't necessarily gifted/2e but have strong OEs. We have a long way in understanding the nature of OEs and positive disintegration outside of the gifted community, but some early efforts are underway.

    • @dabrowskicenter

      Yes, overexcitability can occur across different levels of intelligence including average.

      @@dabrowskicenterThanks for the response.What about developmental potentials do they correlate ONLY with giftedness?

    • @dabrowskicenter
      @dabrowskicenter 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This would be a great question to tackle on the podcast in a Quick Bite episode. I'd argue that developmental potential looks different in gifted individuals, and the gifted experience of overexcitability is different than for typically-developing individuals. Because of their advanced cognitive abilities, gifted children and adolescents often experience early multilevel dynamisms. But OEs and DP are not only for the gifted.

    Emma, you are brilliant. Your presentation captures so many of my issues with some "Dabrowskians". It is fine to have an academic community, I even consider myself an academic (and have done many interviews and analysis/reports of qualitative nature), but the ego, nomenclature, stodginess, resistance to iterations (i.e. basic scientific process) is a HUGE turnoff. Dabrowski did not invent the concept of self, introspection, or many other concepts, he put them into a shorthand matrix that can be useful. Thanks Dabrowski! I am much less interested in visiting a museum of thought than I am in jumping in the stream of flow that can deliver more people to realize their potential and get out of dark places. Useful, easy, modern, relevant, accessible - these are honorable, humanity serving aspirations that align with Dabrowski's invitation. Testing, learning, collaborating, failing hypotheses, and iterating are very basic practices that should be welcome in any scientific considerations, especially when testing a robust theory. You embody this advocacy better than any Dabrowski expert I've heard. Thank you. What is strange is that I loathe but I appreciate how you see that these concept translate into many modalities of communication. I am interested specifically now in a stock and flow or causal loop diagram that shows what happens when a gifted or OE person comes across information as you (and I) did. Back when I 1st re-embraced my own giftedness, I also saw a huge interest in gifted children /their programming, activity addressing some gifted aspects in academia, and nothing for those of us that did not make careers centered on giftedness or Dabrowski. What you seem to be saying is that you are actually more interested in the outcomes of unleashing giftedness - whether that be helping someone out of the dark or helping someone fulfill some potential - instead of staying centered on the theory and how fussy we can get about it. That is where I'm at. Debating nuances of past theory is not useful to me, I've got potential to fulfill for myself and humanity.

    I just saw the talk posted on the Dutch gifted learners conference (NTCN). It’s neat to hear his views from a few decades ago too. EDIT: This was a great interview. I did listen to it at 1.75x because he is thoughtful and takes long pauses. It was fun hearing his interactions with Linda Silverman and other well known giftedness researchers. This discussion seems more focused on just describing giftedness internally than helping parents and educators embrace the strengths of gifted children. More people need an opportunity to see this gem.

    I appreciate the analogies and ideas to bring improvements and attention to Kazmierez's important work. Ultimately, I have found more peace because of the theory of positive disintegration and OEs and believe part of why we're all here it to improve ourselves and once we do to help others improve, too. The ending of this session serves as a reminder I need to do my part by spreading the word.
