I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm Conductor - Paul Weston Liner Notes - Charles Fox Orchestra [With] - Paul Weston And His Orchestra Vocals - Ella Fitzgerald Written-By - Irving Berlin Title: The Irving Berlin Songbook, Vol.2 Year Of Release: 1958 [1986] Label: Verve Records [829 535-2] Genre: Vocal Jazz It is difficult to know where to begin when approaching an artist as wonderful as Ella Fitzgerald, especially when covering a revered recording like Sings the Irving Berlin Song Book from the late '50s. This set includes two CDs with 32 songs chosen from Berlin's collection of nearly 800 songs. These selections are perfectly suited for Fitzgerald's voice and her romantic sensibility; they are happy, occasionally sad, and full of swinging rhythm. A few of these songs -- "Cheek to Cheek," "Puttin' on the Ritz," and "Blue Skies" -- will be most familiar; others, "Top Hat, White Tie, and Tails," "Russian Lullaby," and "All By Myself" are as memorable but perhaps less known. Choices like "Isn't This a Lovely Day?" feature everything a listener would want in a song: intelligent lyrics, memorable melodies, and a strong emotional center. To say that Fitzgerald is in good voice for these recordings would be an understatement; her presentation here is simply regal. It should be pointed out that these two- and three-minute tunes are tightly arranged, and don't allow the freedom of extended scat singing as on Ella in Berlin. The arrangements are also lovely, featuring the tasteful support of Paul Weston & His Orchestra, which never overpowers Fitzgerald. Such songs as "Cheek to Cheek" and "How Deep Is the Ocean?" -- the standards that once dominated singers' repertoires -- seem absent from today's musical scene. That may be unfortunate, but they continue to live healthy lives in recordings like this one. For fans who have enjoyed other songbook recordings, this reissue is a must-have; for those unfamiliar with Fitzgerald's songbook work, this is an excellent place to start.

Swingin' Shepherd Blues Arranged By - Frank De Vol , Nelson Riddle , Paul Weston , Russell Garcia Liner Notes - Benny Green Title: Get Happy Year Of Release: 1959 Label: Verve [523 321-2] Genre: Jazz, Vocal Jazz Recorded during the period of time when Ella Fitzgerald cut her famous series of "songbooks," this set (which in 1999 was reissued on CD) is a bit of a hodge-podge, drawing its 14 selections from six different dates which find Ella backed by orchestras led by either Nelson Riddle, Frank DeVol, Russ Garcia or Paul Weston. "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" was previously available as just a single while "Swingin' Shepherd Blues" (an alternate take) was previously unreleased. As usual, Ella uplifts all of the material and her best moments come on "Somebody Loves Me," a heartfelt "Moonlight Becomes You," a scat-filled "Blue Skies" and (somewhat surprisingly) "St. Louis Blues." Although this was not her most essential release, the formerly obscure Get Happy finds Ella Fitzgerald at the peak of her powers.

Recorded during their creative peak in 1964 (5 years into their collaboration), this previously unheard and unreleased live performance is destined to become a fan favorite from the Oscar Peterson vaults. In his memoir Peterson reflects on the dedication that Ray and Ed brought to the group: "In addition to our trio rehearsals, therefore, Ray would call his own rehearsals in his or Ed’s room and they would simply practice ‘time.’ They created a flexible and multi-faceted rhythmical language that they could apply to any musical statement I might make and enhance any direction I might choose. In short, they practiced ‘all the possibles.’” - Oscar Peterson

The music has the feel of a jam session and, other than a theme-less blues, all of the songs are veteran standards. Highlights of this fine effort include "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "The Gypsy," "Scrapple from the Apple," "Easy Does It," and "I Remember You." Lots of cooking music.

Eldridge did not quite have the range of his earlier years, but his competitive streak had not mellowed with age. Peterson pushes Eldridge to his limit and the music is generally quite exciting. Highlights include "Little Jazz," "Sunday," and "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea."

You have to put up with me thanking you from time to time. This is one of the gems from long ago that I had to give up, and sorely missed. I am not sure the category of hard bop is the best label but it will do if you use it broadly. If you want a foundation for melodic improvisation, harmonic improvisation, a bit of modality, how to mix them, how to do it without sounding like merely a technical show off or jazz school grad, and how to do it while carrying on the spirit of a piece, this is one good place to start. The guys seem like they understand each other well and get along well. Neither Peterson nor Jackson give way to much excess. I am not competent to say more than that. My wife and I are ill right now, and this was a gift from whoever watches over us. Mike

On Green Dolphin Street from The Sound of The Trio is a great track and a good place to start your listening. The tune Put On A Happy Face is better than you might think. Oscar's solo builds in intensity and then he alternates 16 bars of Oscar Pettiford's Swing Till The Girls Come Home with his own solo passages 6 times before dropping down to the original tempo and his coda. All this without pausing for a bass solo. Don't let funny face distract you. Deal with it and Dig the music.

Although Johnson featured several fine vocalists during his run, including Arthur Prysock, Nolan Lewis and Floyd Ryland, it was his younger sister Ella Johnson who arguably best interpreted her brother's material. This generous 28-track set from Rev-Ola Records features several of Ella's vocals on Buddy Johnson sides originally released by Mercury Records between 1953 and 1955, including Ella's perfectly nuanced (she sounds positively annoyed) "Hittin' on Me," the dubiously trusting "My Old Man," the gorgeous hitting-the-road threat "Any Day Now," the defiant "Well Do It!," and the aching "It's About to Break My Heart in Two," all of which are essentially jump numbers but they edge very close to the feel of rock & roll, particularly given Ella's playful vocal phrasing. With the rise of smaller guitar-led combos after Elvis Presley hit in 1956, Johnson found it increasingly difficult to sustain his large band concept, and consequently Ella and Buddy's hits fell off as the decade drew to a close. This intriguing set has all the essentials from the successful Mercury years. ~by Steve Leggett

It takes the cream of Morton's sessions from his legendary 1926 Red Hot Peppers to his 1939 dates leading a small New Orleans band, with all the essential stops along the way, including a 1927 trio with the Dodds brothers in Chicago. This is hot jazz nearing the apex of sophistication, just before Duke Ellington took it even more uptown.

You Better Run Title: Sister Acts on the Gospel Train Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Jube Legends Genre: Jazz, Blues, Gospel, R&B Alongside Willie Mae Ford Smith, Sister Rosetta Tharpe is widely acclaimed among the greatest Sanctified gospel singers of her generation; a flamboyant performer whose music often flirted with the blues and swing, she was also one of the most controversial talents of her day, shocking purists with her leap into the secular market -- by playing nightclubs and theaters, she not only pushed spiritual music into the mainstream, but in the process also helped pioneer the rise of pop-gospel. Tharpe was born March 20, 1915 in Cotton Plant, AR; the daughter of Katie Bell Nubin, a traveling missionary and shouter in the classic gospel tradition known throughout the circuit as "Mother Bell," she was a prodigy, mastering the guitar by the age of six. At the same time, she attended Holiness conventions alongside her mother, performing renditions of songs including "The Day Is Past and Gone" and "I Looked Down the Line." In time, the family relocated to Chicago, where Tharpe began honing her unique style; blessed with a resonant vibrato, both her vocal phrasing and guitar style drew heavy inspiration from the blues, and she further aligned herself with the secular world with a sense of showmanship and glamour unique among the gospel performers of her era. Signing to Decca in 1938, Tharpe became a virtual overnight sensation; her first records, among them Thomas A. Dorsey's "Rock Me" and "This Train," were smash hits, and quickly she was performing in the company of mainstream superstars including Cab Calloway and Benny Goodman. She led an almost schizophrenic existence, remaining in the good graces of her core audience by recording material like "Precious Lord," "Beams of Heaven," and "End of My Journey" while also appealing to her growing white audience by performing rearranged, uptempo spirituals including "Didn't It Rain" and "Down by the Riverside." During World War II, Tharpe was so popular that she was one of only two black gospel acts -- the Golden Gate Quartet being the other -- to record V-Discs for American soldiers overseas; she also toured the nation in the company of the Dixie Hummingbirds, among others. In 1944, she began recording with boogie-woogie pianist Sammy Price; their first collaboration, "Strange Things Happening Every Day," even cracked Billboard's race records Top Ten, a rare feat for a gospel act, and one which she repeated several more times during the course of her career. In 1946, she teamed with the Newark-based Sanctified shouter Madame Marie Knight, whose simple, unaffected vocals made her the perfect counterpoint for Tharpe's theatrics; the duo's first single, "Up Above My Head," was a huge hit, and over the next few years they played to tremendous crowds across the church circuit. However, in the early '50s Tharpe and Knight cut a handful of straight blues sides; their fans were outraged, and although Knight soon made a permanent leap into secular music -- to little success -- Tharpe remained first and foremost a gospel artist, although her credibility and popularity were seriously damaged. Not only did her record sales drop off and her live engagements become fewer and farther between, but many purists took Tharpe's foray into the mainstream as a personal affront; the situation did not improve, and she spent over a year touring clubs in Europe, waiting for the controversy to die down. Tharpe's comeback was slow but steady, and by 1960 she had returned far enough into the audience's good graces to appear at the Apollo Theatre alongside the Caravans and James Cleveland. While not a household name like before, she continued touring even after suffering a major stroke in 1970, dying in Philadelphia on October 9, 1973.

This is state of the art swing, circa 1945, just before it was upended by bop. The surprise is the very deep full sound all these pick up bands have. (One band seems to have a full sax section, the other a full brass group) The result is what swing should sound like, but usually didn’t achieve.

Crosby is part of the Rhythm Boys on much of the material here, though he always gets at least a little solo spot. Four of the titles here -- "Sunshine," "Mississippi Mud," "Do I Hear You Saying," and "You Took Advantage of Me" -- never got out originally. Among the other curiosities before us, "Oh Miss Hannah" was only issued outside of the United States. The material is all first-rate, easily among the liveliest and most sophisticated material in the band's output, and among its most enduring today -- Bix Beiderbecke is featured prominently throughout, so the value for his fans is a given, but one shouldn't forget Whiteman and the rest of the band, or some of the dazzling textures of their arrangements (especially those by Ferde Grofe). What's more, the group was still at its peak as a popular jazz ensemble when these sides were cut, so even listeners who are disinclined to appreciate vocal numbers may want to check this disc out -- it's worth owning for "Mississippi Mud" alone, even though Crosby isn't half as prominent as Irene Taylor. Some of these cuts appear elsewhere, even on other ASV releases, but since Columbia's Crosby-Beiderbecke collection is out of print, this is the only way to get that end of the band's output on CD. The sound is generally good to very good, although few tracks such as "High Water" are marred by excess surface noise from their sources.

This solo Riverside set (reissued by OJC on CD) as usual finds Lewis generally sticking to the blues (with "You Were Meant for Me" and "Fate" being exceptions), mostly performing originals. On a few of the songs Lewis switches effectively to celeste. It apparently only took Meade Lux Lewis two hours to record the full set and the results are quite spontaneous yet well organized, a fine all-around portrait of the veteran pianist in his later period.

This session was radio broadcast in Hamburg. Fitzgerald shows a little wear on her voice, as her vibrato on held notes is more noticeable, yet she still is a masterful vocalist. Pass is superb as an accompanist, always providing perfect support and delivering top-notch solos as well. The program is typical of the singer's wide-ranging taste, including standards, jazz classics, and modern pop, though the latter includes two lackluster takes of Morris Albert's ridiculous ballad "Feelings," the universally despised (at least by jazz fans and people with any musical taste) song is repeated by Fitzgerald because she evidently wasn't satisfied with her first rendition. Of course, the obvious highlights include the delightful scat treatment of "One Note Samba" and a rousing, extended "Perdido" that closes the concert.

If You Can’t Smile And Say Yes (Please Don’t Cry And Say No) Title: Jukebox King Year Of Release: 2024 Label: Oxford Label Services Genre: Jazz, Blues, Swing Effervescent saxophonist Louis Jordan was one of the chief architects and prime progenitors of the R&B idiom. His pioneering use of jumping shuffle rhythms in a small combo context was copied far and wide during the 1940s. Jordan's sensational hit-laden run with Decca Records contained a raft of seminal performances, featuring inevitably infectious backing by his band, the Tympany Five, and Jordan's own searing alto sax and street corner jive-loaded sense of humor. Jordan was one of the first Black entertainers to sell appreciably in the pop sector; his Decca duet mates included Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. The son of a musician, Jordan spent time as a youth with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and majored in music later on at Arkansas Baptist College. After moving with his family to Philadelphia in 1932, Jordan hooked up with pianist Clarence Williams. He joined the orchestra of drummer Chick Webb in 1936 and remained there until 1938. Having polished up his singing abilities with Webb's outfit, Jordan was ready to strike out on his own. The saxist's first 78 for Decca in 1938, "Honey in the Bee Ball," billed his combo as the Elks Rendezvous Band (after the Harlem nightspot that he frequently played at). From 1939 on, though, Jordan fronted the Tympany Five, a sturdy little aggregation often expanding over quintet status that featured some well-known musicians over the years: pianists Wild Bill Davis and Bill Doggett, guitarists Carl Hogan and Bill Jennings, bassist Dallas Bartley, and drummer Chris Columbus all passed through the ranks. From 1942 to 1951, Jordan scored an astonishing 57 R&B chart hits (all on Decca), beginning with the humorous blues "I'm Gonna Leave You on the Outskirts of Town" and finishing with "Weak Minded Blues." In between, he drew up what amounted to an easily followed blueprint for the development of R&B (and for that matter, rock & roll -- the accessibly swinging shuffles of Bill Haley & the Comets were directly descended from Jordan; Haley often pointed to his Decca labelmate as profoundly influencing his approach). "G.I. Jive," "Caldonia," "Buzz Me," "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie," "Ain't That Just like a Woman," "Ain't Nobody Here but Us Chickens," "Boogie Woogie Blue Plate," "Beans and Cornbread," "Saturday Night Fish Fry," and "Blue Light Boogie" -- every one of those classics topped the R&B lists, and there were plenty more that did precisely the same thing. Audiences coast-to-coast were breathlessly jitterbugging to Jordan's jumping jive.
