5 months later: Philips Baristina review. It’s all about the beans!
Just before the end of the year 2024, Baristina still in use and no reason for further updates until something unforseen happens. Thanks all for watching, commenting (sometimes hilarious) and bringing combined views almost to 100K!
For now a ‘final’ update on the Baristina. Tried various beans, did some de-scaling, encountered some issues (portafilter not always moving back to the original position), and still enjoying the libaration from ‘cups’. Happy

Biggest advantage for me is that it doesn't need much cleaning. I have a machine that's fully automatic but ever so often the drip tray is full, the disposed coffee container is full, it tells me I need to clean the brewer or need to descale. And you need to clean the brewer and inside nce a week. I like the simplicity of this machine and my other machine broke down (after 10 years!) so I'm going to buy this one.
Thank you for doing these videos. Thinking about this machine vs a super automatic.
I have problems with the porta filter it dont go's back after grinding send once to philips for repair after month same problem are there more people with this problem or have i a monday morning barista please react
I had similar problem, the puck holder inside seems dirty and needed some cleaning (wiping).

i do experience the same. did not send back, i just slide back manually. not a big deal but do hope they come with an update (sson)
Hello Mr. Alferink. I wanted to express my deep and sincere thanks for your Baristina review series. It was the primary reason I bought one and I've been using it for a few weeks now with pleasing results for both myself and my wife. Honestly, I'm not sure I would have bought the unit without the trust you instilled in it given your experience and then your in-depth followup reviews over a few months. Thank you!
thanks for sharing your opinion. i searched a lot, viewed some tests but was not sure if this is a good machine on the long term. i ordered it now 😊
bought this machine 6 months ago, it broke and got repaired after 3 months. 3 months later it broke again and I have to return it (again). Trust me, go find another machine.
Can you set the water temperature? It seems to hot …
@@dianadidi9439 no, not possible to set the temperature and sure not too hot! why do you think so?
Does the pressure leak persisted after this brew?
@@favs6622 No this only happened once! the issue with the handle not sliding back by itself not solved. the spring remains weak
I love how it looks tho
Thanks for the video. What is the advantage of this compared to a fully automated one? for example the 3300 series. I find a hustle have to bin the used coffee every time. Thank you!
Nederlands graag - er zijn al genoeg filmpjes over deze machine in het engels
Put somthing on your webcame to look at while recording. You look camera shy and hiding with hat on. But good update
have you tried americano / longo out of thiss machine? how's the result?
hi, have you used a moka pot yet? I have saw good reviews online about moka pot coffee but when i tried it with good beans - a good grinder and with both hot and not so warm water the coffee result was so bitter and bad!
Appreciate the work you've done for the rest of us. A shot of espresso for me is 14-20g of coffee. So ... as cool as the whole mechanism is, not even on my list of cool things to try.
How to adjust the grinder?
300 euro 'machine'... no grinder adjustment
What are some of your favourite beans with this machine for a decent price that you bought in the Netherlands?
always the question; what is a decent price? my/our favourite beans are (by far) the 'Arabella' (organic) from Simon Levelt. (€ 8.25/250 gram).
get some real coffee beans from local shops. the ones you tried are all burned way to long
nice review
Salve. Posso chiedere se il caffe che produce è simile a quello della nespresso lattissima one oppure a modo mio?
Thank you
Would really be interested in how much grams beans per lungo cup is needed
Hi Just! Thanks for sharing! Two questions: Amazon reviews show that many people complain about drying coffee powder falling down from the right side of the machine over time while drying. Did you not have that issue? // Secondly: would you mind testing an "Americano" ... by using a Lungo first ...cleaning the filter ...then pressing middle button 5 seconds - then machine would add 110 ml of water... which actually would make a nice Americano. But does it taste well too? Thanks!
yes we sometimes have coffee powder falling out on the right side. not so much of an issue, needs some cleaning. about your second question; do you mean to make a espresso and then ad water via the center button? a lungo and extra water seems to be too much?
@@justalferink7427 Thank you so much! Yeah, hot water with middle button (5 sec) on top of Espresso or Lungo to make it Americano - or to use the hot water to pre-heat espresso cups would be my idea / concern.
What other users are complaining about is some coffee powder the get stuck to the "tamper" and it will eventually fall off. So, I will clean the tamper with a clean cloth every few runs. Unfortunately, the Baristina does not stay as clean as a Nespresso machine, it requires some cleaning, but still much less work than a regular espresso machine.
I truly appreciate you doing these videos. It’s so helpful to see a real person demonstrate. Thank you!
For a 300 EUR machine I think 5 months (or 1 or 2 years you are closing your video with) is rather short to stay working like it should. What do you think causes the sliding back issue? Is it just poor quality materials and technology? And what about your conclusions on the beans? You have used variations but which coffee beans gave the best results? And did you see a difference in extraction time?
How much of a step up is compared to the cheaper drop brew machines?
Does this make regular coffee too?
@@RoyKroon tell me, what is regular…

Myself have the same machine and as you i am very happy with it. What we missed in the box is a manual. So as how to clean the machine or adjust the volume of coffee breed. The tast and temp are excellent. Very very happy with it. Nou try to find my kind of coffee beanes
My guess. Try clean the ‘top’ part of the machine. Maybe grounds built up there
I tried... to me, the mechanical spring, activating the mechanism (how nice, no electronics involved in the movement) seems to be a little weak
I bought a new barastina a couple weeks back. The portafilter got stuck in te middle every time i wanted to make a coffee. I returned the machine and got a new one. With the new machine i dont have issues.
yes, could be, some early models? I got mine from an online order in France... not sure if I will go through the hassle of returning. a minor issue sofar
I have the machine. It’s a 10/10 for convenience but a 4/10 for quality of make (and comparative price). The coffee is pretty good however, but the lightweight plastic makes me wonder about its longevity. So far it’s working well. For €200 more you can get incredible machines with more function control, so it depends on your need for convenience imo.
sure, every few hundreds of euro's up will give you other functions. for us, the dimensions & simplicity of the set-up is key. longevity the reason for these video updates; we'll see
@technoviking4131 do you have a recommendation for such coffee machine with better build quality but still as compact and good looking as this one?
@@mr2yess The Breville Bambino Plus is a consistent winner imo. Highly rated, better build quality and with many more control options. Brief update on the Baristina: its performing as expected. I worry about internal cleaning tbh (there is no way to do this) but so far the coffee has been generally good overall.
@@technoviking4131 Breville Bambino Plus is around 500€ and doesn't contain a grinder like the Baristina, so that recommendation is pretty useless. There is no such machine as a Baristina on the market, making it really unique in its form.
Oei.Jij hebt de Senseo ontworpen.😢Ben je koffiehater?😂
What milk frother do you use?
@@IuscelyF Illy milk frother F280g (stainless steel jug). a bit slow compared to napsso frother but no pfas and easier to clean
I am very interested in the machine. But my problem/question is always: How do you clean it? Can you do a video on how to maintain the machine? Thank you.
will update soon with a 'cleaning' video. we're quite tidy and keep the machine easily clean. drip-tray is tiny but sufficient
is it plastic filter?
which filter? in the handle? stainless steel
Thanks for a lot the video! I have some questions to aks. 1. As I understand grinded coffee is not tampered at the end, is that correct? 2. Can you adjust grinder to grind finer to get stronger coffee? 3. Can I use machine without a grinder (with another grinder, just to brew coffee)? 4. Does intensity boost produce more mess (grinded coffee falling out on the table)?
1. grinded coffee is tampered down but don't ask me for the tech-details since i did not open up the porta-filter or mechanisme inside 2. no grinder adjustment (so many machines out in the market with these features, comes all at a price. this one is dead-simple; gladly) 3. yes, you can bypass the grinder, adding ground coffee to the portafilter directly and push the linked button (boost button for 3 seconds, manual stop!) 4. no not more mess at all
Wow! Thank you so much for your reviews, I'm researching espresso machines for Christmas gifts and a big issue people face is longevity. This is giving me a good idea of how durable this machine is.
Last week two buttons started to blink after brewing coffee. Quick check of the online manual; machine needs de-scaling. Philips suggests some chemicals from their own portfolio. I decided to buy an organic descaling liquid from Cafetto. All works fine again.
Is this really an espresso machine? It looks more like an automatic coffee machine. It gives the illusion of making espresso since it has the portafilter but it does everything for you. Except for throwing away the coffee grounds.
@@roel455yes, it’s a big illusion. It’s a full automatic machine
thanks! just got mine and I agree, super easy!
Does the bean container lift out? Im wondering how easy it would be to change to decaf beans if needed throughout the day. Thanks!
@@erinmartin3815 no lifting out. again, this is a no-nonsense ‘simple’ machine. changing beans not convenient. decaf or other ground coffee can be added directly.
I found you can add ground decaf coffee and bypass the grinder. quite easy.

I sold the machine because the coffe was not strong enough for me. Now a have a Nespresso Virtuo machine that i love and brews much stronger coffee
@@henkrenst my biggest reason to move away from Nespresso… the stream of cups wasted. with Virtuo even worse. strong or weak coffee seems strongly related to choise of beans. i’ve tried some 15 varieties sofar; what a difference

@@henkrenst good luck with all the excessive packaging material. strong coffee relates to beans. we experienced weak results and… strong ones!!
Just got mine today. Incredibly easy to use, and very smooth foamy espresso. Your initial reviews on the ease of use is what made me purchase. The regular espresso (left button) is plenty for me, and I’d consider myself a cafFEEN (usually go for quad shot with milk at a coffee shop) 10/10 recommend this machine.
glad to help you out, enjoy!
Worst espresso machine ever. Cheap build, cheap quality, espresso tastes burnt, and is also very weak. I bought one and it lasted in good quality for maybe 90 days. It now leaks water ALL over. Pellets don’t compact. Terrible terrible product, AVOID
Awesome, thanks!! Really appreciate your vides about this machine. Not much on TH-cam about it, so this is perfect
