AI ART VS ARTIST - Should You Be Worried?

Join me while I paint and discuss the burning topic - AI ART vs ARTIST...and answer the question we've all been wondering about - should you be worried? To be honest - there's still a lot we don't know about AI and the art world, but so far, in my opinion, us traditional artists don't really have much to worry about. Instead I think there is a lot we should be excited about when it comes to AI ...

    My first ever exhibit comes in about three weeks. It is an open air exhibit for both sellers and non-sellers. I’ll be a non-seller. I want to learn how these things work (or don’t work). The county has given us a free 10’X10’ space, a table and one chair. Space is in a local park that is about 95 miles away. I am scrambling to assemble walls to hang my works. I do not own a canopy tent so it will be truly an ‘open air’ event for me. I’ll be asking for comments and critiques from those who care to comment. Any suggestions you might offer?

    Do you as an artist ship after the fair or do you let the buyer take it right then and there

    • @nikkolewith2ks
      @nikkolewith2ks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! It really depends... I usually only ship commission orders - most people that shop art fairs tend to be local so I haven't run into a situation like that yet. But with that being said - most people will take the piece straight out of the booth, some pick up at the end of the fair so you can keep it on display. Sometimes, for larger pieces and collectors, I'll offer to deliver it to them (which will score ya extra points and give you the opportunity to continue to build a relationship with your buyer )

I put 2 nails into smaller wood cleats. I attach that to a cleat on the wall and then just place the canvas on there, hanging it from the stretcher bar on the back of the canvas. You could also wire that canvas and then hang that on the cleat. The second way is screwing the smaller cleat in the canvas stretcher bar and then placing that onto the cleat wall. I take the lazy route and do the first way haha. Hope this helped!

    How do these walls and your art work hold up when it’s windy? I’ve had tents blow over bc of the regular tent walls so I’m wondering if these would do the same

    • @nikkolewith2ks
      @nikkolewith2ks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Heya! So I've never had an issue with my tent blowing away because of the walls, here's what I've done to avoid this... I started out with buying a pretty good quality tent. I've seen some that have been super flimsy and you definitely want to avoid that to start! You also want to make sure you have really heavy weights holding down the legs of your tent. I use sandbags but I've seen some people use concrete blocks, water jugs, etc. The mesh walls are very sturdy if the legs of the tent are sturdy , you just have to make sure you buy the one that fits your tent correctly. They pull very tight and they also have a bar at the bottom to help hold it/ weigh it down. I tend to use 2 s hooks for hanging my paintings so I can get the work as taut as possible... that really helps when it's windy!

    Well done KK! 👏 I think a lot of artists find it hard to capture babies and youthful people in general. I've seen some artists making kids look surprisingly old. I think it's hard to capture the eyes. A lot of people don't realize a lot of kids have a little bit of skin puckered under the eye, like you captured here. They leave it out, thinking they look like bags under the eyes. Also, shadow is sometimes hard to control with a pencil and keep light for a softer face. You did an amazing job! ❤

      @nikkolewith2ks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much Em! (I know this reply is super late, my bad! lol) I agree, I find a lot of people tend to go overboard with the shading when it comes to babies and younger kids - focusing too much on the little details instead of the overall picture!

    ❤ like the S hook and canvas hanging idea. But live in Wales UK where it's very windy and wet. How would you protect your paintings. Or hang them if your gazebo tent doesn't have a back and sides? ( some places you hire them already set up)

    • @nikkolewith2ks
      @nikkolewith2ks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Ahhh yes, it is always good to have your exterior tent walls handy (should have made a point of that in this video) but I couldn't find mine before filming! You are right, if you outsource your tent, they will most likely set up or have the exterior walls on hand for you. If you own your own tent using gorilla tape on any leaks in your tent.. this has been the best solution I have found on keeping your paintings safe! I also bring clear bags that I can put over the paintings if it gets realllll bad. Doesn't look the greatest, but you know lol

    Hi Nikkole, thank you for sharing your process. I remember, in one video you mentioned that art shows moved your art career in to a new level. I've participated a few local shows (and your video helped a lot to get ready!). But they were so slow that did not make any sense 😑 So my question is what is your top of Canadian / Ontario art shows to participate? And why?

    • @nikkolewith2ks
      @nikkolewith2ks 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Loved that my videos helped you out! Yaaa, it can be really tricky, there are so many factors that go into making sales at these shows- the weather, the turn out, the time of year, etc. I've done some shows and they've been great - but then the next year not so much. I have found it super helpful to get to know the other artists at the shows - ask them about shows they've been apart of, how did those shows work out for them etc. Networking is so key with these things- that is how you really find the fairs that are best suited for your style of work. For me personally, I've always had really successful shows (in terms of sales) at the Riverdale Artwalk in Toronto and at Oakville Art In The Park. Riverdale especially has a really high amount of sales for its exhibitors. The show is run by The Artists Network (which I am a member of, I volunteer on the education committee) which is a super great resource for artists! I highly recommend checking us out and becoming a member - we host group gallery shows as well! Here's a link to the website: www.artistsnetwork.ca/ A few note worthy shows that I have not participated in, but have heard great things about: The New Art Festival - Ottawa Toronto Outdoor Art Fair - Toronto Cabbagetown Art & Craft show - Toronto Artist's Project - Toronto With all that being said - sometimes things are just slow. Myself and many other seasoned artists still have shows where we don't make nearly as much as we would like to... it happens, so try to not let that get you feeling discouraged!

    Beautiful art sale, I am learning, thank you!. Wish I can sell my paintings that price, I do way to cheap. 😁 Hopefully someday. I have been in art fairs but not too much sales, people like to buy small paintings prints and pay less money. 😬 And the cost of some places for the space 10x10 is over $100 a day here in MN. If it is big fairs is over $200.😬

      Thanks so much! Keep in mind I've been doing these shows for 10 years now and have built up an audience... my paintings weren't always worth that much. The first show I did, I barely sold anything! Most of my stuff back then was between $50 - $300. Just keep working at it, making tweaks and changes to how you do things as you go- make sure you learn from your mistakes and take note of what successful artists at these shows are doing! I do find smaller stuff is more successful for a lot of people at outdoor fairs - so having a range is good. Yeah, these shows can get really expensive. Here in Canada a good outdoor fine art weekend show is about $600!

      @nikkolewith2ks ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been using a tent from the company Outlet Tags - I've had it for 8 years and it's held up great!

      Yayy! Glad you found this helpful! Buying your own tent is definitely a great investment if you plan on doing a lot of these shows - just make sure it can withstand wind and rain!

    Could you please share the link for hooks

    • @nikkolewith2ks
      @nikkolewith2ks ปีที่แล้ว

      I just went to home depot and bought S-hooks! Make sure you get the ones that are thinner if you are using mesh panel! If you are using a metal grid the thicker ones will work fine :)

    Great video.. could you please help with few questions 1. what payments options to offer? 2. Do we need to wrap the art and what you advice? 3. How to price the art? Please advise .. thanks in advance

      Hi! So glad you found this video helpful! 1. 10 years ago when I started some people paid cash - Although that was when I created smaller work which was $100 or less. Now people only ever pay with credit or debit card - the square chip reader will become your best friend! 2. Yes! It's up to you on how you want to wrap it. I've seen people use kraft paper, bubble wrap, etc. I prefer to use kraft paper since it is biodegradable and better for the environment! If its raining I'll wrap it in kraft paper and then throw it back in the bag it came with. 3. Pricing is hard. I have another video talking about that but essentially you just have to go through trial and error. See what's selling and raise the cost if you are selling a lot of that one item. Hi do u mean the cleat is screwed on to the back of the painting (the stretcher) or it works as well when the painting is hang on to the screw which is screwed to the top cleat?

    • @nikkolewith2ks
      @nikkolewith2ks ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! You can do it either way. I see most people screw the cleat into the canvas but I didn't like the idea of making unnecessary holes that wouldn't serve a purpose later on when the piece is finished. So I just nailed in 2 nails and hang the paintings on those while or attached the wired painting to those while I work :). I've only had it fall a few times lol... but it works pretty well for the most part!
