DRZ 400 OUTBACK ADVENTURE 2023 - DAY 6
Picking up from where we left off at Betoota, and now carrying an ankle and leg injury, time is running out, and I must decide whether to continue my journey West to Alice Springs, to meet up with Craig and Pato (who are crossing the Simpson Desert), or to head home, cutting my adventure holiday short.

Hi there heading to starlight’s lookout this weekend and just wondering how long it took for you to get there and travelling at what speeds? Thank you
@coolclutch8669 G'day, I think it took around 45 minutes or so to do from Longreach, so we probably sat on 100kph most of the way as it was a fairly well graded dirt road. I'm not sure what it is like now as it was a few years ago now. Have a great trip, and enjoy! Thanks for watching! 🍻👍
Thanks for your video on this very informative. I've just added nudge bar to mine did you install the light bar as not sure on that procedure, any help would be great.
@brentonl1746 G'day, no it came already fitted as standard on the Toby Price Edition. Cheers and thanks for watching. 🍻 👍
Great vid series, I'm thinking of getting a DRZ and doing the same. I've got a few question i hope you dont mind answering. Are there any weaknesses that need to be kept an eye on with the DRZ when doing ling distance in dirt roads? What do you think the best tyre is for this type of trip? Are there sny concerns with security at night when sleeping in tents? Is oncoming traffic a real danger? Is it safer to travel in larger group or can a couple of guys doing it easily? Thanks
@jethrox827 G'day, and thanks for watching. I just completed another 6200 km ride in June on the DRZ, finally crossing the Simpson and out to Uluru and back. To answer your questions, Annoyances would probably be only having a 5-speed gearbox. They rev high at highway speeds. Although you can compensate a bit by changing the gearing it for long distance riding. Definitely upgrade the seat, too, and add the kick starter mod, something I wish I had done as they seem to be hard on batteries. Things to keep an eye on are oil consumption, don't let it get too low or risk blowing an engine, and locktite all bolts as they will rattle loose on rough roads. I did 80% of my last trip solo, but it is definitely safer travelling with others, particularly if they have the same bike, you can share spares if needed. Generally, the smaller the group, the better, I find as it makes decision-making easier, and you are not always waiting on a large group of riders. It is also easier when it comes to finding and booking accommodation. I had no security issues, though when we were in Alice Springs, someone would always be watching over the bikes when out shopping. Camping was no problem. I just follow my gut. If it doesn't feel right, move on to somewhere safe. Tyres, I highly recommend the Pirelli Scorpion Rally Race on the front. No kidding, it is not even half worn after 6200 km of road and dirt. Amazing grip, too. On the rear I had a Motoz Tractionator Desert HT, hooked up nice in the sand, but is now quite squared off due to all those miles on the tar, but then again so did the Dunlop D606 I has before that. I ran about 26 psi in both, and never got a flat the whole trip. A mate used a Motoz Adventure on his KTM 500, which had better wear on the rear. Two blokes travelling together is probably ideal, three is best, as travelling together can sometimes get stressful if you have a disagreement.😁 Oncoming traffic is not really a problem, but unpredictable animals can be. Just stay alert and have communication between riders. Saying all that, the DRZ does make an awesome, fairly bullet-proof budget adventure bike. Just look after it, keep up the maintenance, and it will look after you, and you will make awesome memories together. I hope that answers your questions. Best of luck! Cheers, Grant. 🍻 👍
@@nextmotoadv247 thanks for the in-depth response mate, I'll sub to your channel and like all your vids, hopefully yt will give you a couple of dollars for your effort 👍
@jethrox827 thanks, much appreciated. 👍
Wow great. What model is that tenere?
@cheedmond6560 G'day! Steve's blue XTZ660 is a 1998 model. The black XTZ750, which belongs to my good mate John, is a 1992 model. Cheers, Grant. 🍻👍
2:07 LOL
i feel like the drz400 is a money pit basically you spend on upgrades as much as you spend when buying the bike the klr650 comes with sidebags, the adventure model, windscreen, very big fuel tank and much more comfortable on the highway in my opinion
hey mate, some of this footage was amazing. I'm currently creating a documentary on the tornado as a part of a school-based documentary assignment and would love to use some of your footage if possible. this documentary may be showcased at the annual film competition called BUFTA at Bond University so of course ill be sure to put your name in the credits. I hope to hear the best from you :)
@Boyd_E sure no problem. I'm happy to help. 👍
@@nextmotoadv247 thankyou so much! is there a specific name you'd like me to use in the credits or would you like me just to use your youtube channel name?
@Boyd_E, TH-cam channel is fine. If you like, I can give you the raw footage to work with if that helps.
@@nextmotoadv247 the youtube video seems to have all I need, thanks for the offer though. have a great rest of your night.
@Boyd_E too easy, best of luck. 👍
Hey mate I think I came across you guys at Condello Downs shearing shed, on my DRZ after doing the Canning, Anne Deadell h/w and Goog’s track supported . Next month looking to east west crossing solo unsupported having done west east last time. Looking forward to next episode and watch you struggle with all that weight. Great job on editorial love it.
@markcolby5300 Great stuff, I just recently did East to West Simpson crossing unsupported and out to Ayres Rock in June, lots of water, but the desert was looking amazing. At the same time, the other boys did Steep Point to Byron and also did the Madigan line, huge effort. 💪 All the best with your trip. Cheers, and thanks for watching! Grant. 🍻 👍
Hi guys. What gearing are you running. Cheers, john in Cornwall
Hi John, We all went with 15/44 sprocket combination, which seems to be the most popular choice amongst DRZ adventure riders here in Aus. It's a happy medium for highway cruising at 100kph /60mph and low enough for the dirt and tight trails. Cheers, and all the best, Grant 🍻
I feel for you not getting this trip done ! I have been in this type of situation myself on another ride but i struggled on , Each to there own opinions, With a fractured angle but i strapped it up and put up with the pain , was worth it got the trip done ,And i'll always remember it
Great stuff, and well done, that would have been tough. 👏 I thought about it often after I got back, but knew that I would give it another crack. So I bought better boots and lightened the bike, and crossed the Simpson just last month! It was one of the best experiences I've ever had on a bike. I wasn't going to let that desert pass go to waste! 😉 Cheers, and thanks for watching, Grant. 🍻👍
Must have been a punch to the gut watching your mates continue on. Ah well. Great series of videos any hoo :)
Yes, it was a difficult decision to turn back. I didn't want to chance riding further across and becoming a burden to my mates if I came off again, worsening the injury. I didn't want to make it theirs or anyone else's problem. 😉
Deons Lookout is spectacular but way to green for my liking haha. Cant believe my old Biker Bytes sticker is still up there at the Dreamtime Serpent rest stop 10:46 from my ill-fated trip back in '21. Great video mate, I think you made the right choice, the desert will wait for you. I'll have to catch up on the previous episode. ATB Jason.
Thank you, Jason. I did happen to make it across the Simpson Desert just recently, in time for Finke and also out to Uluru. It was spectacular and full of wildlife. Videos are coming soon. Cheers, Grant. 🍻 👍
@@nextmotoadv247 I'll look forward to those Grant.
Last time I was at Toolum Falls it was closed to the public because it was reclaimed Aboriginal land 😢
Wise choice to go home,, being injured out there you are a liability to yourself and others (yep I've done it ☹) Good Vid,, I love that area
All good, I gave it another crack last month and made it through this time. 👌 Thanks for watching. Cheers, Grant. 🍻 👍
Thanks for posting 👍 I have a 1250 GSA which I love 😊 but reckon the 900 GS would make a good stablemate lol 😂 mmm 🤔 just need the money lol 😂
You would absolutely have the best of both worlds with those two.👌
Oh, I wish I'd known about this event - I love the Hinterland roads!
I'm sure when the adventure model of the 1300GS is launched in Australia, (not sure when), they will run another one. Cheers, Grant. 👍
F900GS is looks nice and seems to offer a lot in its segment. Keep riding safe
Yes, the F900GS is an amazing bike. The only concern for me is the fuel capacity. I'm sure there will be aftermarket options soon for a larger fuel tank, maybe even a rear Safari tank like I had on my G450X. We can have large distances to cover in Australia sometimes between fuel stops. Thanks for watching! Cheers 🍻 👍 Grant.
@@nextmotoadv247 Great feedback :)
Tell your mate he can’t see the headlight when his riding I just ordered the gs1300 trophy
100%! Congratulations, what an awesome machine it is. 👌
Well Done! Looks like you had a great run (apart from the unusual amount of water in the Desert). I did my first Simpson crossing in Oct 23 (Solo). Heading back with some mates this year around the same time. Can’t wait to get back there!
Thanks, you will have an awesome time out there, at least you know what you are in for. Enjoy! 🍻 👍
I think i passed you guys going the other way in the desert, i was driving an old landrover?
Yes, G'day! I distinctly remember your beautiful old Landrover passing us and commenting on how good it was to see it out there. Im pretty sure I've got footage of that moment. I'll be sure to include it in my edit. Cheers! 🍻 👍
@@nextmotoadv247 very cool, clip me in the full edit? i havn't got footage of you guys, but i did cross Eyre creek in the deep bit. i'll share the link when i finish the edit of our video.

Congratulations, especially after last years disappointment. Looking forward to the videos
Thanks, yes, it was a big tick off the bucket list, and everything lined up nicely this time. Starting with a better pair of boots. 🍻👍
Excited to see the vids and so glad you got another shot at the Simpson! Really enjoyed your first series.
Thanks, much appreciated. I just had to get back out there again, certainly worth the effort. Everything seemed to align, and I made a few changes this time around that made the difference. 🍻 👍
@@nextmotoadv247 Great to hear!! Your vid made my day. I’m heading out on an unsupported crossing leaving from Bris on the 4th of August, excited would be an understatement. Your vids have been a great guide on what to expect! Cheer mate!
Fantastic, it is so green out there at the moment. Now is the time to go while the daytime temperature is low. It made a big difference. The bike used appropriately 37 litres, which included the 76km Eyre creek bypass, and the extra bypasses around the muddy salt flats ( add another 20km on top of that). Don't attempt the mud as we got stuck for over an hour, wasting time and fuel, much easier to go around. Enjoy! 🍻 👍
@@nextmotoadv247 Great tips Grant!! Much appreciated. I’m also on a DRZ so good to know roughly what the fuel consumption is like when running all the bypasses! 🙏
Looking forward to the videos! 🙂
Cheers, it was an awesome trip, many ups and downs. Rode the poor DRZ home with a partially stuck open carburettor, and starting issues but made for an interesting trip home. 😉👍
Great Video. Thanks for the info. Ordering my kit, Did not realize how important this kit it. I have an MQ Triton but im sure the kit is the same. Thanks again.
Hi Guys, New to the GS 1250 What is the best all weather mode to be safe. I believe that Road Mode gives the best overall??
Apologies for the late response, I've only just returned from my latest adventure. I do remember the instructors saying road or rain mode would be the safest, and I do remember choosing rain mode as a precaution. I would, without a doubt, say it would be the safest mode for all weather conditions.👌
Awesome video guys! Just out of interest did you gear the Dr's for the Tarmac of keep the original sprockets? Cheers
Hi, thanks for watching. The gearing we use on the DRZs are 15 front, 44 rear, which seems to be a happy medium for both tar and dirt, but I still can't help looking for that 6th gear! Maybe I'll find it one day? 😄 Cheers. 🍻👍
Thanks for the reply! and keep up the amazing videos Cheers@@nextmotoadv247
You said one could turn the bike into a "Motard". What is a Motard? Thanks Cheers!
Basically a motard or (supermoto), is dirtbike, with usually a 17 inch diameter set of road wheels and tyres. They are quite fun to ride, and they even race them in this configuration. 👍 images.app.goo.gl/ipgZ2pikeazhXwgY8

@@nextmotoadv247 Sweet ty ty...... run an 09. Great bike. Cheers 🍻
There is no need to change the secondary ignition coils. They work only at higher RPMs anyways and you can see a problem if they are not working properly, at over 130 km/h. They "live" longer as the primary ignition coils because the most of the time they are "resting" As I saw in the footage, your case was already there at low RPMs and lower speed. The problem was on one of the primary ignition coils, but it is good to change both because it is a matter of time, after a while to break down the other also.
Thanks for your input. As a precaution, I thought it better to change out all four as the bike has now done over 235000km, and I didn't want to be second-guessing. Plus, it was cheaper to buy a kit of four than buy them individually and find out I needed to change them all out. Cheers, Grant. 🍻 👍
Awesome to see that the problem is resolved. Great trouble shooting mate. Stay upright 🙂
Cheers, stoked to be back riding it. 🍻👍
I live in Coolangatta. I was watching the lightning from around 7pm, it was spectacular. Around 8:30 I went out on the balcony watching it, while looking at the radar. It was an amazing show of Mother Nature. But around 9pm the front hit us. It’s hard to describe, but within a matter of seconds it felt like the oxygen had been sucked out of the air, and the wind hit with that ferocity that it ripped down parts of the construction site next door tossing it through the air. At this point I went inside as I feared something with fly around and hit me, despite being 7 stories high. It was the biggest storm that I’ve experienced in the 10 years I’ve been up here and by some margin. I took some video, it’s next level. Loving your outback series by the way.
Wow, that would have been scary at that level. Hopefully, these events don't become the norm each storm season. Thank you for the kind words, and thanks for watching. All the best, Grant. 🍻👍
Seeing as you had both of these bikes, I would expect you to say your current bike is better? Curious on your take on how they are to each other, as I know nothing about the limited made BMW, while the DRZ has been around forever
The two bikes in stock form are chalk and cheese. The BMW was much lighter, had better suspension, and more power, but less comfortable for long adventures. When I bought the DRZ, it wasn't in its standard form. It was already set up as a lightweight adventure bike, with bigger tank capacity, aftermarket seat, and the suspension had been done and sorted. The subframe on the G450X is not designed to carry weight, like the DRZ, and the oil capacity, like most 450 enduro bikes, was less than a litre. So, I would have had to modify the bike quite a bit to turn it into an adventure steed (more dollars too). I don't think reliability would have been an issue with the BMW, but we all know that the DRZ has proven reliability. Parts are easily available for the DRZ, too, unlike the G450X. I would have kept both if I could. Cheers, Grant. 🍻 👍
A bad case of the luggage steering the bike. Would you be attempting it again? I would love to attempt the Simpson Desert. Logistical out if my reach right now.
100% spot on there! Yes, we are planning for another crossing this year. I will definitely be making a few changes. 😉👍 🍻
@@nextmotoadv247 looking forward to seen the changes. All the best.
super bécane
Nice footage but you had way too much gear on the bike for first timer. I know as i did the same thing
Tough call but a wise one. Top marks for picking up your rubbish - thanks for that.
Great effort. Yer it's a tough call. I'm yet to re-attempt myself.
Maybe too heavy but more like too high behind you also, Too me i think the gearing might be to high ! I run 15/44 for trips and 14/44 for general stuff, in the sand you need to sit back keep the power on somewhat
i crossed the simpson solo unsupported on my drz with 15/44 gearing it wasn't an issue at all. the drz breezed through it, couldn't ask for a better bike to do it on.
Looks like great country berween Innamincka and Birdsville 👌 It was hard to gauge watching the video but how deep was the sand on the track betwwen Innamincka and Birdsville? I can handle riding any surface...but sand does my head in!!
G'day, The sand wasn't too deep, really between Innamincka and Birdsville, just a little loose at the edges for a few short sections. Nothing to worry about really, so don't let that put you off from riding a fantastic road. Thanks for watching. 🍻👍

Dear Sir, i just found your video of Tamborine Mountain. I live up here, you passed our street after turning left at the fig tree roundabout. I never left our property, so saw nothing of the devastation. We were told not to be on the roads during clean up. Hubby went down the mountain to purchase a generator. We still could purchase some f ood up here, but a great deal went off. The butcher lost most of their meat. Our power was out for 13 days. I would like to thank you for filming, as I saw nothing. I shall watch your videos from now on because it looks like you have tones of fun...Sincerely yours Devorah.
Thank you for your kind words, I hope you and your family are doing well. My heart goes out to all of the families (and their pets) up there who had to endure that devastating time. We have many close friends who were affected too, and I just wanted to try to show the general public, who may have had no idea of what happened on Christmas day in our region. It's so sad to see it in that state. Take care, and I hope things return to normal for you soon. ❤️
Great vid mate! Can I ask how these bikes go on the highway? Can they sit at 110kph without issue or are they struggling like a DRZ400 at those speeds?
Thanks, yes, they could sit on 110 if you geared them accordingly. I have since sold the bike but would have certainly gone down a few teeth on the rear sprocket if I'd kept it. (It had a standard 15/48 sprocket combo). I currently run a 15/44 combination on my DRZ400, and it will sit nicely on 100km/h all day. I'm sure something similar would work for the G450X. The seat would be something else you would want to change for highway riding. Cheers 🍻 👍
Awesome vids guys! What sprocket ratios are you running for those longer trips? Cheers
Thank you, we are all running 15/44, which seem to be a good compromise for tar and dirt. Cheers. 🍻👍
Thanks m8@@nextmotoadv247
