Teaching my pony to jump
This video shows the behind the scenes from my first jumping session with Pony. I introduced him to the jumps by using treats to reward him whenever he went over the jumps and found that he was a very willing partner!

Teaching my pony to pony
มุมมอง 24416 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This week I am introducing my pony, Pony to ponying.... aka teaching him to lead safely off the side of another horse. My other horse Cricket is the true hero of the operation, remaining an excellent influence over Pony even when Pony was a little unsure of himself.

Pony Training Vlog | Groundwork and riding!
มุมมอง 9721 วันที่ผ่านมา
During his time here, I've been working with Pony nearly every day on handling, horse care and ground manners, but I finally feel he's progressed enough to start spending some more dedicated time in the tack. Pony's a quick study, so even as he's starting to understand what I'm asking from him, his body and fitness need time to catch up to his mind.
Taking my horse for our first solo trail ride

I bought a pony!
มุมมอง 2812 หลายเดือนก่อน
If you've been following me for a while, you might be shocked to see that I did not buy another retired racehorse! Truthfully, I don't know what got into me, but when I saw Pony's ad, something about him caught my eye and when I went to see him I just knew I had to have him. So this is my new "horse" who is technically a pony. He came with the name "Jake" but I haven't been able to call him any...
Farm Updates and Sad Farewells

Standardbred Retraining: Settling an Anxious Horse on the Trails
มุมมอง 1073 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today, Alfredo and I are demonstrating some of the best tips and tricks I have for settling a nervous horse on a trail ride. While Alfredo himself is not an anxious type, I have worked with many more nervous types in my retraining work and Alfredo helped me demonstrate some of the best coping strategies I've found.

Standardbred Retraining Vlog: Improving the leg yield
มุมมอง 1524 หลายเดือนก่อน
This week Fredo and I worked on improving our leg yield. At the walk, I find that Fredo can shoot off to the side and push through the outside shoulder. In order to improve the leg yields, he needs to move off my leg, but stay between my reins. I find that I have a tendency to forget my rider position as soon as he has a hard time, so part of today's ride was focusing on staying correct in my p...
Standardbred Retraining Vlog: introducing a western saddle
มุมมอง 2454 หลายเดือนก่อน
Fredo's first ride in western tack! I wanted to introduce Fredo to western tack to see what he thought of it. He handled the extra weight like a pro and rode around the farm one handed so I could take the video and he was perfect as always.

Once again, working on helping Fredo develop a slower trot with a more consistent tempo. Fredo is a big horse with a bigger step, and he can occasionally get a bit strung out and quick at the trot. It's a work in progress, but today we're working on frequent transitions and changes of directions to keep him from speeding up in the trot.

Standardbred Retraining Vlog: Why we scratched from our first show
มุมมอง 945 หลายเดือนก่อน
Most of the time, when you have to scratch at the last second, your horse pulls a shoe or comes up lame. But this week, I lost my childcare at the last second and opted to scratch rather than attempting to bring my daughter to the show. There will always be another day to go to a show, and in the meantime we enjoyed a nice bareback hack around the farm.

Training Self-Loading with Positive Reinforcement
My goal someday is to get my new to me Standardbred gelding as confident as Cricket! What a good guy! And Pony is so cute even with his little shenanigans 😆
He really is the best. He's got his quirks and some weird phobias, but he is a real people pleaser and tries so hard ❤️
Thankyou for the new tip, my hands at 55 hurt from pulling manes... I'm going to try this today ❤🐴😀👌
Hi Colleen! Can you tell me about your arena? Just what size and what kind of sand that is? We are planning ours and your arena looks perfect for us
It's 60'x120', to match the specs of a small dressage arena. I don't know the exact type of sand blend, but my contractor chose it specifically for dressage. I can send you his contact if you'd like!
@@ColleenNolanTran Thats ok. No problem. Thank you!
Well done you!🎉
Beautiful country!!
Seeing you make a 14h pony look so short kills me 😭 they're a decent size for me, I'm not that short i swear
😂😂 I am pretty tall lol
I wish we had something like this around our barn. We have some nice on property trails and roads to hack on but a whole park would be amazing!
I love your TH-cam content!
Thank you!
In my final weeks of makeover prep... I assume there are only designated rings you are allowed to lunge in? Were there times when that was less busy compared to other times?
There was definitely a designated lunging pad, but the business of the ring varied throughout the day without a clear pattern that I could tell! I just did a quick lunge with my 2021 horse before realizing it was not having the desired impact lol (he normally settled easily on the lunge and he got very wild lunging here). When I was in the ring it was very busy, but like 5 minutes after I left it was empty lol I didn't lunge my 2022 horse at all. If you have questions about where to find the lunging pad, you should email the secretary!
@@ColleenNolanTran Thank you!!!
You do great videos!
Yeah Mom! My mom try’s to support me as well, even though she doesn’t really know much.
I recently adopted a retired STB and I've been watching all your videos. So glad I came about your channel! I will definitely be using your experience to help me and my guy on our new journey
yay! Good luck on your journey together :)
Haha! I have a pony I call "Pony"!!!
It's the perfect name for a pony 😂
Hi Colleen! Sorry to change the subject but do you have a favorite saddle that fits standardbreds well? I have found they are so hard to fit.
I have a used stubben 1894 that fits my narrower horses/horses that haven't built a lot of top line! I also have a wider dressage saddle for Cricket now that he's filled out with more top line. What type of saddle fitting problems have you had? I haven't run into too much trouble with my guys, it feels like I am harder to fit than they are lol
So sorry about Cheddar! 💛💛💛
Do you have any guidance or advice on what is considered "USEF show legal"? I'm not familiar with where to find out what is considered show legal?
You'll have to read the rulebook for your specific discipline. I compete in dressage, and you can use side reins, but the lunge line needs to be clipped directly to the bit and not run through the girth. www.usef.org/forms-pubs/F3p8pgrWgAo/dr-dressage-division www.usef.org/compete/resources-forms/rules-regulations/rulebook
@@ColleenNolanTran I've been binging your videos. Really like your training philosophies, and we are similar. I'm working towards the makeover this year but still not 100% sure if I'll get there or not. Thank you!!
Thank you! Good luck!! I hope you make it. I think both years I had major doubts about whether I could make it during the summer 🙈 I'm pretty sure making it to the makeover for me was 50% luck and 50% skill 😂
Where do you buy a pedestal?
I got mine on Etsy, but the shop I used isn't selling them anymore. Maybe see if a local handyman can build one for you!
Sing if you are tense.
Would you recommend a standardbred for a first horse? I'm retiring soon, and would like to get a horse
Standardbreds are lovely horses with quiet and trainable temperaments, but I would say it really depends on the individual horse, what your experience is and what you're looking to do with them! Standardbreds are often big movers and many times completely unstarted for riding after their racing careers, so it really depends!
@@ColleenNolanTran thank you
@@ColleenNolanTran there's an adoption program near me. They work with them after racing. Then adopt them out.
Have you ever considered if he is struggling with some anxiety and tension in his body? Fredo reminds me of my gelding, an ex racer as well. Whenever my gelding is dealing with tension, he has a really hard time staying with me and not getting rushy. And in those moments, it can actually be counterproductive for me to try and slow him down as either a, he is not capable of slowing down, and b, it can actually build the tension further. Its the same concept with a person experiencing anxiety; if you try to help them come back down before their body is ready for it, you may accidentally send that person into an even tenser state. And of course, I do not know your horse and it looks like you are doing your best for him. I respect that. Just thought I would share my experience and learning with my gelding as food for thought. Good luck!
That's a very valid question! I do think he gets anxious when he loses his balance, which causes him to speed up, which makes him lose his balance, which makes him get anxious. Kind of a vicious cycle. I like to ask him to slow down because letting him open his stride without fixing the balance doesn't help his anxiety - slowing him down and rebalancing him does. But I do know your point, especially with a hotter or anxious type horse, you have to be careful about bottling the anxiety and make sure they have an outlet! Good luck with your guy :)
@@ColleenNolanTran thank you! Best of luck with yours as well. With horses, they always give you a challenge to learn how to best support them. I feel like I am just at the beginning of my own journey still but it feels good to know there is so much potential for learning and growth. As long as people are open to learning what their horse needs/how to support them, the sky is the limit for what they can do together. Its a beautiful thing :)
Nice❤
Hi, I have an OTSTB that I have been working with for over a year now on the trails. We are at a barn with trails right off the property and every time we go out he will “whiny” to his friends as soon as I take him deeper out on the trails. We’ve done the trails around the property numerous times for a year but he still gets very anxious and then on the way home will start to be very forward. He has good brakes and listens well but not sure what else to do about the anxiousness.
This is such a great question! It's a little difficult to answer without the full picture of what exactly he is doing when he is anxious and how disruptive it is. If it never rises beyond "annoying" behavior (the whinnying kind of gets my blood pressure up, but its harmless) I'd just ignore it! Make sure you're talking to him as you go, maybe start asking him for what I call "thinking exercises". So for my horses, I usually hack on a loose rein, but if they start asking anxious, we'll start doing some lateral work at the walk. So I ask them to come on the bit and leg yield around. Another thing you can do is give them a specific task like circling around trees or stepping over branches. Anything to slow them down and make them think! Last tip - try going just a smidge outside of your horses comfort zone at a time and slowly expanding their area of confidence. Dealing with anxiety/barn sour/buddy sour behavior is so hard! Good luck!
Thank you so much for all the tips! I also just watched your leg yield video so I will be teaching him that as well. 🥰
@@gubrn4171 good luck! Let me know if you have any questions ☺️
Omg the shifting of the weight is my biggest issue! I constantly try to throw Happy over with my body and not in the right ways. We have brought our work back to a walk with this as well since I need a refresher on how to keep myself in the saddle in a way that helps and doesnt hinder
It's so hard! I'm just trying to help but it's not helpful lol
A lot of people and i mean a lot of people think pulling their hair is animal abuse and it hurts them. This video is nice though. I just don’t know why those people don’t do research lol 😂.
I have a 501C3 Standardbred rescue in South Carolina USA. Can I post your training videos on my FaceBook page? I am trying to bring awarenes about how versatile and intellegent Standardbreds are. I sure would appreciate it
Yes, of course!
@@ColleenNolanTran Thank you!
He looks amazing! I am curious if you have had any cart pacers and if so how you have taught the canter ! Would love a video on that ! One more question what do you use to film ?
I had my husband film this one because my pivo wouldn't work 🙈, but I usually use a pivo or a GoPro! I do have two other standardbreds who are pacers. I don't think I have any videos on how I introduced the canter, but it really depends on the horse!
Can you tell me how big your riding ring is?
Probably 70'x60' or so? It's very small, just big enough to do a 20m circle
Did you have trouble fitting it? I have had a few Standies but could never find the right fit. Is that Semi QH bars?
It's FQHB. I'm definitely not a western saddle fitting expert, but it fits with a thicker pad!
He looks so good! Was he a trotter or pacer when he raced?
He was a trotter! My other standardbreds are pacers 🙂
I am enjoying watching Alfredo.
That's a really interesting way to plait a longer mane.
awesome video, thank you! may I ask you please, how did you teach him to come to your call? :) I am having hard time to take my standie mare from the field. thank you in advance!
Fredo kind of came that way - I'd only had him a few weeks when I took this video. My other stb, cricket was hard to catch, but now he comes when called after many years and a lot of patience. I call them in to feed 2x a day, and sometimes more often if I need to get them out of the way, so I'm calling them over for food or another thing they like way more often than I do to ride!
Thank you for your reply! So its all up to the horse in the end, I was confused because the horses I had (for a lease) before I got Luna would come any time after a call! Thank you and love watching your videos! ❤️
What gorgeous mane he has! So shiny and silky. Thanks for the tutorial. I used to braid my horses mane just for fun. I had to get the instructions from books. (Before internet times.) The crochet hook is such a good idea! The braids turned out nice. How many horses do you have and how did you learn to braid manes?
Thank you! I have 4 horses right now. My 2 personal standardbreds, Cricket and Tomcat. Alfredo is my retraining project at the moment and my OTTB Cheddar who was supposed to be a resale horse, but didn't want to leave me 😂
And I'm not sure I remember how I learned to braid! I think I must have looked it up several years ago and then I've just practiced many, many, many times 😂
@@ColleenNolanTran 😂
@@ColleenNolanTran Aw, I love their names!
I love Standardbreds! Sorry it didn't work out with the show. But you weren't just thinking about yourself, and that is such a more valuable thing. Bareback rides are fun too! I miss my horse and just hopping on him bareback for fun and seeing what would happen. He was always a good boy though. We had a quarab too. His back was much rounder for bareback riding. I hope you have a good week.🐴
Thank you! There's always another show 🥰 at least I still got to enjoy my horse
Well said. I love the considerate training tips
Aw, your mom is adorable! Alfredo looks like he is doing well in his schooling. I know nothing about dressage other than it looks pretty. I hope you have a good show!
Thank you! I didn't grow up doing horses so my mom is not horsey, but she's the best ❤️
I am Picking up my new Standardbred mare on Monday so exctied for her journey, when doing a dessage test (i hate dressage its my worst phase) I always get comments to make sure you use the whole arena so as close to the borders as possible I found doing some lateral work is helpful to get them around the leg a bit more. also does your boy headflick? he looks great here i know alot of standys have the head flick thing going on is that common over there im based in New Zealand.
Good luck with your mare! Yes he does flick his head around a little bit. My other stbs have all grown out of it with time and consistency, so I'm sure the same thing will happen with him! He's still just figuring out the contact
Alfredo is doing so well. Your mother is a great helper.
Thank you! 🥰
Wondering what type of hoof boots you use and also what type of bits do you use for your standardbred?
Most of my horses are shod, so I use my Cavallo entry level boots. I actually had them on hand for when my horses pull shoes, and had been putting them on Fredo until his feet toughen up or I decide to put shoes on him. I actually forgot to put them on for this ride though and I'm not sure they'd be the best option for out on the trails. For my bit, I just have him in a basic double jointed snaffle. My other standardbred has a slightly fussier mouth, he goes in a nathe.
Because you are having regular lessons, one thing you could do while riding alone, is to talk to yourself and tell yourself all the things that your instructor would tell you. Basically, give yourself a lesson with the sort of information that your instructor would give you. For a horse who has been under saddle for such a short time, Alfredo is doing very well. He looks like such a sweetheart.
"I think this will take.." *stares into camera with hopeful eyes* "..10 minutes or less" LMAO. OTSTBs are the best though! Cant imagine Fredo not taking it all in stride
You know as soon as you claim they can do something, suddenly they cannot do it anymore. Not Fredo though! 😂 He only makes me look like a fool by doing things that I said he can't
@@ColleenNolanTran lmao!! He is such a good boy
What brand is your horse trailer?
It's a sundowner!
Awe! What a good boy. Glad it was a relaxed first ride out. My heart horse was a Standardbred. 🥰
