Introduction to the Myth of the Hero’s Journey
🔥 In this video, we explore The Hero’s Journey, as described by Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces and its connection to Carl Jung's psychoanalysis. The Hero’s Journey is an archetypal pattern found in myths across cultures, symbolizing the process of personal transformation. In the Hero’s Journey, the protagonist undergoes a symbolic death and rebirth, shedding an old version of themselves to be reborn stronger, wiser, and more capable. This mirrors the process of individuation in Carl Jung’s psychoanalysis, where the individual integrates the unconscious aspects of the self to achieve wholeness.
We also touch on the insights of Jordan Peterson and his interpretation of the Hero’s Journey within the context of Jungian psychology. The psychological death and rebirth is a powerful metaphor for overcoming challenges, stepping out of your comfort zone, and realizing your full potential.
Whether you're interested in mythology, psychology, or personal growth, understanding the Hero’s Journey of self-discovery can provide valuable tools for transforming your life.

In my videos, I look at Jungian topics through an interpretative lens, advancing themes discussed by Carl Jung along trajectories of psychology, psychoanalysis, theology and philosophy. Exploring Carl Gustav Jung’s model of the psyche, his concept of individuation, and his philosophy in general may help us to uncover paths toward a more full and complete Self. For me, this is especially about “learning to see”, that is, regaining the ability to witness the dynamics of reality unfolding before us. In these dynamics, I argue throughout the videos, we find a direct access to who we become.

How would you phrase this differently. I don’t think is really clicking for me at all
Well, … simply put for psychoanalysis consciousness would be what do you think you are - that is your ego - while he would claim that what you really are is largely based in the unconscious which is not what you think you are - so you have to get to know you unconscious in order to get to know yourself beyond what you think you are
The Great Story and personal story. I believe it provides proper nutrients to the cosmic mother tree if we consider the collective reality as more truth than our personal ones. Bring back the cosmic truth of life death rebirth. Remedying the apathy towards empathy.
Thank you for your comment, very well said!
Hi Dr, I very much like your video. It's great to be able to watch someone who thinks in a like manner as I do and certainly someone of such great experience. I am 23 and I was admitted to the mental hospital of UHG in Ireland last year for a duration of one week. Anyway I am looking to pursue a life that is in alignment with what is worth seeking. I often find I can become obsessive and lost and closed minded. More than anything I desire to be a doctor myself. However I am unsure on the avenue to take to get there. I have a big interest in Psychology and of Mental health hospitals. My mind is thinking of studying general medicine and there is a pathway to that via my undergraduate degree. However something, perhaps an unconscious force in me, doesn't feel like I have identified the right career path that is most suited to me and that I would achieve my deepest desires and experiences. I feel very doubtful and I want not to rush into making a decision on it. Anyway I feel lost but I am on the right path. I am currently in Australia and I plan on returning to Ireland at the end of my two years here. Thank you for you're videos. I think they may prove important for me personally.
This sounds like a very complex situation. In the end I think such decisions should be evaluated from both sides, consciousness and the unconscious. If there is a conscious reason why the unconscious desire cannot be fulfilled this is as important as the unconscious resistance against what consciously would feel good.perhaps meditating on this more will help or perhaps trying out the profession that you desire would help you get a better feeling of it that is working in mental hospitals for instance… I wish you all the best on your Pass and thank you for supporting the Channel!
very good talk Dr. and so true...... it is quite hard on the ego to realize that ultimately, it must take this journey THROUGH space and time yet not hold on to anything...at all. all is in flux and fleeting here. and yet, to quote Teresa of Avila: Let nothing disturb you let nothing frighten you all things are passing GOD never changes be patient, and at the last you will find all fulfillment hold GOD and nothing will fail you for HE ALONE IS ALL it can be a hard walk, but there is truth in what you are saying🙏❤💥

Hey man, just stumbled upon the video on the connection between the self and collective unconscious, followed by this one A couple of remarks: There's a weird reverberation that doesn't make it pleasant to hear compared with other podcasts Your speech is way too loose, this is the level of language that's ok in informal settings. You sound like what me and my friends would exchange over a beer or coffee. Lots of redundancy, you could sum up Overall you need to refine your thought or maybe compensate with editing work. You present yourself as a pro, you've got to walk the walk then The intention of vulgarization Jungian thought is good Good luck!
Thanks a lot for your feedback! I will try to improve on the points you mentioned. In more recent videos that are yet to be uploaded I have a much better audio set up with the proper Maik and everything and I think I was also able to improve the structure little bit, although I would like to maintain an informal setting because in the end I think the videos for me are more of a dialogue than a formal lecture setting but again, I will have to improve massively and I’m still in the baby steps … so your comment is really appreciated
U should consider what Jung ment with the quadterity above or below trinity 💚🍯🚪
I’ll look into that ! Thanks a lot
I think you're right! Have you read The Wholeness of Nature by Bartoft? I chatacterize Ego-Self relationship not just as a relationship between part and whole, but rather the ego's sense and its openness to the call is a how the psyche becomes authentic.
I haven’t. Great recommendation - thanks a lot, I’ll look into it. Do you have any other recommendations ?
@DrFlorianKleinau I'm slowly reading the red book at the moment and it's very revealing. I'm a Sanskritist though , perhaps we can have a fruitful dialogue. Are you in Germany too?
My apologies if this is a dumb question. Where is one supposed to start with all this stuff? I have a lot of anxiety as well as other, normal, mental challenges. I see a number of videos and I find it hard to understand what the starting point for most of this stuff. Is shadow work something you can start on right away or do you need a better foundational understanding to make use of this stuff in general?
There is no such thing as a dumb question. A few thoughts... it’s funny because I was also thinking this week about the parallel of the unconscious mind from a rhizomatic perspective. This also has a strong connection with Jacobo Grinberg's syncretic theory. Personally, I also find similarities with Indra's net. nice video! Thank you :)

My shadow self is a train on tracks of three.
haha, good one!
No. The Ego is a byproduct of language.. The word. The capacity to identify something as being other than you also defines you. So calling a tree, 'a tree' identifies yourself in the process as 'not tree'. Eventually one would begin to contemplate the self, the Ego because you can actually name it and identify it. That's the power of language.. You are the word. Funnily enough, as soon as you name your Ego. It becomes abstract and really no longer you. The only time you're truly in touch with yourself is through your feelings with no words from your Ego to shape your intellect.. Like when you're dreaming.
thanks so much for your comment ! Really appreciated.

Love this talk Dr. I've been blending these topics most of my adult life and i firmly believe Jung and the mysticism of religions are talking about the same thing. I wish i could engage the Self on a 1 on 1 dialog but i'm not there yet. Instead, things like when a bad situation arises, I will see the Self intervene in the ensuing events (so many times now, I know for sure it's "HIM"). Or I put a question out to the Universe and later will receive a synchronictic event, thought or image that will give me some insight. Perfect example as you are talking about Christ....... I just recently discovered on you tube a video on a document called "Pilate's Letter to Caesar". I will email you a link. I've been researching this document ever sine i saw the video. Listening to the words has made bells go off in my head and heart. An Aha! moment.🙏
Thanks for sharing, and I’m glad the talk resonated with you! It’s amazing how you’ve been able to see the Self at work in your life, especially through those synchronistic moments-Jung would definitely see that as a sign of deep connection. Even if you're not yet in direct dialogue with the Self, you're clearly engaging with it in a meaningful way. I also agree about the connection between Jung and religious mysticism-it’s all pointing to deeper truths in the psyche. I’d love to hear more about "Pilate's Letter to Caesar" and how it’s sparked those Aha! moments for you!

We all do.
Well said Dr. More of this please

You asked for a recommendation so I'll give you what I'm struggling with now as I am working on integrating my shadow: 1. I don't know who am I really, as I started to be aware of the polarity of my shadow elements (the coward and the sadist) I lost sense of who I am, I don't know what is the narrative or how to move forward, so I'm feeling kinda hollow. As I don't know how to interpret myself. 2. I noticed in he lights of Jung and Maté respective work that I have a HUGE PROBLEM with living in the present, I literally don't know how to be present and I can't figure it out.
It sounds like you're in a powerful yet challenging phase of self-discovery. Jung’s concept of the shadow, especially as you recognize its polarities, can often unsettle our sense of identity. It's important to remember, I think, that the hollow feeling you describe is not a loss but a space for transformation. Your sense of self is evolving, and this disorientation is a natural part of integrating those unconscious elements. These are my first thoughts... As for the struggle with presence, both Jung and Maté emphasize the importance of awareness. The first step is noticing your lack of presence, which you've already done. The key is patience-presence often comes gradually as you integrate more of your shadow and grow comfortable with these emerging parts of yourself.... Hope this can help and thanks for sharing
Brilliant proposal. I totally agree. That doesn't take away the importance of the proccess of integration, to my understanding, as man has either the choice to revert back to unconscious patterns or constantly work on bringing his mind to presence which is a never ending proccess. And I would like to use Camus' view here with his view on the absurd. Even if the attempts have no lateral conclusion. They still have the potential to gave wn inheret meaning no matter how excruciating (imagining Sisyphus happy) (which takes HUGE LOADS OF COURAGE)
Thank you for your thoughtful response. I completely agree that the process of integration is ongoing and requires constant effort to remain present, just as you’ve described. It’s true that the pull to revert to unconscious patterns is always there, which makes this work both necessary and unending. I appreciate your reference to Camus and the absurd-his vision of embracing the struggle, despite its lack of resolution, indeed resonates deeply with the process of self-integration. Imagining Sisyphus happy speaks to the courage it takes to find meaning in the ongoing, often painful, task of bringing unconscious elements into the light. There’s beauty in that perseverance, even if the outcome remains open-ended.
Dr. was going to ask you to explain that transcend function more please, interesting topic, thanx!

Also it's Halloween time this month of October, can you do a video on the spooky ghost stuff Jung encountered? Thanks
That’s a great idea. I’ll try to dig up something interesting
Hey now Dr.! Would it be right to think that Jung, from a scientific view, explored mystical spiritual matters in connection to what man calls God/Nirvana? And he uses his own terms to describe this experience?
Sure, you could frame it that way .. ;)
The sage (king) gets his laws from the earth The earth, its laws from heaven Heaven, its laws from the Tao When one observes their own condition (which is generally outside of their control up until a point of examination or moreso awareness) the action of truth seems to spontaneously come forth. If we observe something such as our actions, our thoughts, our emotions - in the space of awareness which is passionate and one pointed - it seems as though all of this drama diffuses. We can find ourselves sitting in the empty space of being, which underlies even the firmament of the collective unconscious. However, it seems that there are two poles of consciousness; the positive pole (action/engagement) and the negative (inaction/observation). When one rises from the depths of inaction and rises through their own neurology and conditioned being, the action which occurs seems almost determined and often 'good' or better than if one had engaged in an activity which allows ignorance (distraction/hedonism). My remark here, is that it seems that the nature of being and energy is moving towards some form of not only truth but also a 'good' which benefits the collective unconscious aswell as consciousness as a whole and the mission for awareness to achieve higher levels of 'knowing'. It fascinates me to see the concept of sin in this light and realise the potential of heaven and hell. Sin being something which we know to be bad or non beneficial to the whole/self and is acted out in spite of knowing. While we ask ourselves what is the purpose of our lives - it can be simply concluded that it is to live. To apply our individual and conditioned meaning and purpose as a motivator to sacrifice our experience to the collective unconscious. Furthermore, an interesting concept is the function of even devoting ones positive experience to the divine which I learned through Hindu mythology. Anyway, these are some thoughts that have been running through my head lately. Thanks for the concise educational videos. Its beneficial for those who are not in a position to have a teacher or conversations about such complex topics.
Thank you for your thoughtful reflection. I love how you connect Taoist and Hindu ideas, especially how awareness seems to diffuse the drama of our ego, letting something more authentic emerge. Your thoughts on sin remind me of Jung’s shadow-facing what we avoid can lead to a deeper wholeness. The idea of life as an offering to something larger is powerful. Thanks for sharing these insights!
