Jason's Palm Paradise
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 พ.ค. 2022
My tropical style garden in Yorkshire. I have palms, bananas, agaves, cycads and lots of other exotic style plants. I have a mixture of hardy and tender plants and some in the middle that with some protection can survive our Northern UK winters. I have been creating this garden for about 7 years

Nice to,see your ideas and garden. Some good bargains 🎉
@@gordonissocoollike Cheers just need to decide where to put them now
The Strelitzia can be raised easily from seed. The seed is is unusual as it has an orange fur on.
@@bloggalot4718 Iv never tried from seed, they are slow growing so will take a while to get a decent size plant
I would say the t.rex will shade everything in that border long term. 3m width canopy with just 1 stem.
@@samcress123 yeah it probably will. It will be dappled shade though so I don't mind that too much. I was thinking out loud in the video so nothing is decided yet.
I planted an Aspidistra in my garden about 18 months ago - it didn’t do anything for a while but it’s now growing well. None of the recent frosts have affected it. Hope yours is successful.
@@michellelillie8389 Good to know that they can do well and are hardy. Thanks for letting me know
some nice stuff there, i think the plant move around will look good in those spots
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects Cheers, I will have to decide where everything will go
Some nice cheap new additions. I picked up a Acacia Delbeata but ended up pollarding it as so tall and whippy even with the cane. Hopefully it bounces back and thickens up a little when planted out this year
@@essexhognose1808 I think I might have to do the same
Looks great! Thanks for the tour. What has been your coldest night so far?
@@regalportraits3921 No problem. We got -5/-6
Hello, thank you for the great garden tour, you have many beautiful exotic plants 👍 My garden doesn't look so nice in winter, my palm trees are wrapped in fleece because it can get very cold here in Germany 🥶 Best wishes Peter 🌴
@@palmenfreund Thanks. I try to keep the garden looking good all year round, and balance the amount of plants that need protection. I have seen some of the temperatures you get in Germany, we tend to have milder winters now with short cold snaps. Thanks for watching 👍
Good video mate, garden is still looking really nice for January. The only thing I will say is I had to stop watching the video before the end because from 9 minutes onwards, the music was too overpowering.
@@YorkshireTropics Thanks. I didn't watch the video, maybe I didn't turn the music down enough. Will make sure it doesn't happen again.
Could do without the music
@@436799 thanks for watching
Great to see some new growth, even weeds. Looking forward to spring and seeing how your garden grows
@@NickCraggs Thanks, it shows that it's slightly warmer under the cover. I'm looking forward to spring too.
great video, they are looking good so far! the protection has done the trick for sure
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects Thanks, yeah it's usually pretty good
Similar temps here in Glasgow mate was -6/-7 when i left work this morning, brutal! Can never go overkill with the protection better safe than sorry! 👌👌👍
@@stephenkeeble6857 Wow you got it bad then. Think it was -4 or -3 here so hopefully tonight will be similar
Too late to wrap now -10c tonight and all my containers are frozen solid already
@JH-fv1gq Wow -10 could cause some real damage, hope it doesn't get that bad. It's -3 here now not looking forward to tomorrow
i dont blame you mate! it looks like a potential -6 for me hopefully it doesn't get that cold 🥶 ive also gone out and wrapped loads more too
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects Prepare for the worst, hope for the best 🤞
@jasonspalmparadise agreed 👊😎
Nice update! Not managed to get in mine properly yet 🌱💚
@@peachsplants9724 Thanks. I try and walk round once a week or so, not much to do out there except mulching
Nice one Jason
@@geesgardeningclubuk5247 Cheers mate
Just ordered a trachy from Nigel @ hardy palms, went for a princeps at £20 + shipping which isn't bad 😆 all my trachys so far are the run of the mill fortunei's so I'll see how it goes 🤞
@@stephenkeeble6857 I got one a couple of years ago from there. It spear pulled last year but grew back fine. Fortuneiis are great plants but just seen as common now. For growth rate you can't get a better palm 🌴
@jasonspalmparadise 100% mate
Good to see everything holding up Completely agree with the trachycarpus comment, I really dont get all the fascination with the hybrids and species that all look so similar you literally couldn't tell them apart stood next to eachother, ive got a fortunei and waggy which are different looking enough to justify and then a very small Martianus simply because ive seen the trunk is self stripping so will look different again. Ive only protected the aloe polyphylla and Puya, literally everything else planted out has been left to its own devices (even the cactus bowl is showing absolutely no signs of damage) but I may throw a bag over the Butia tomorrow if were getting -6.
@@Knapper94 I think it's mainly for collectors to get all the different types. I have always held off getting a waggy because they are slower growing and I have never seen one in a garden centre. I like the polyphylla they are worth protecting. I think you should be ok leaving stuff unprotected most plants are pretty tough
My Washingtonia always seem to suffer in the greenhouse over winter, even with a heat cable switched on when <0’c forecast. I convinced myself they were drying out so have made a conscious effort to sprinkle with water ever few weeks this winter but they’re already looking ropey with all but the newest one or two leaves dying off! 😢
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 I think the shock of going into the greenhouse sometimes makes them suffer. Iv watered twice since I put mine in there. Maybe you need more humidity in there, with the heat cable the air might be dry. When I water in winter I just water over the top of everything, rather than just at the base

Any tips to stop mould in greenhouse?
@@DJSupaflyguy You need air flow. Open the door or window whenever you can
@ ok, thanks and yeah I think that’s the issue then because I haven’t opened in over a week or so.
pretty much identical weather to me in leicestershire, now its just waiting for the damage to show as the weather warms temporarily. hopefully no casualties!
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I'm not expecting any damage. If we had a few nights of -3 and lower then maybe there would be.
Just had a phoenix robelinni delivered
@@christopherjones9826 Nice palm 👍
-4 here too in Lincolnshire but I setup a seperate thermometer near the house and it was 3•C Warmer
@@YellowbellytropicsInteresting to know it was that much warmer near house. Must radiate heat through night
ive had the same last night down to -4c, newest fronds on the tree fern blackened and all perinials have drooped now. hopefully this will be coldest we get this winter
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects Hopefully, because if we get many more nights like this there could be some dead plants next spring
@jasonspalmparadise 😬😬😬 im thinking the same 🤦♂️🤦♂️
🫡👌👌👌👌
@@DJSupaflyguy 🥶👍❄️
Looks like uv dodged a bullet so far mate. Been -3 last few days here in the West coast of Scotland, heavy ground frost that's still not lifted 🥶🥶 only plus not had a single flake of snow well not so far anyway! ❄️ u do kinda worry tho, with a cold snap this early on, not even winter yet 🫣
@@stephenkeeble6857 It was below zero last night, but not as low as -3 yet. It's those days where the frost doesn't lift that I think does most damage. These cold snaps come and go, we might not get another for a month. It's so unpredictable now that nothing will surprise me. 😕
Plenty of snow in s yorks
@@christopherjones9826 You always seem to get plenty there
Only rain and a hint of sleet here in Essex thank Christ compared to you guys. I do think that all the wet will be ice in the next few days causing more of the issue though
@@essexhognose1808 Lucky to avoid it this time. I agree, I think the worse is to come now as it freezes. It's only November too so any damage now might leave some plants hanging on over winter 😔
Lugar muito lindo mesmo valeu ok😊😮🎉🎉❤😂
@@asaventurasdozemoura5770 Muito obrigado, I was in Rio it is awesome the plants you can grow there. 🌴👍

Hi Jason - How much are those Polycarbonate sheets you use over the plants?
@@albey1816 I'm not sure exactly, but I know they are not cheap. I was lucky my mate was taking down his conservatory and gave me some. The more flimsy stuff is cheaper and is good for overhead shelter.
How big was the pseudopanax when it was planted? I've got 3 of different sizes this year
@@essexhognose1808 it was about 2 foot tall. It has doubled in size this year and has branched off.
Looking great, your garden is starting to mature, hoping for a better summer next year 😊
@@estherterrier6400 thanks, we could do with a better summer. Let's hope winter isn't too bad this year
I would love to build an enclosure over my garden, like the Eden project in Cornwall. Imagine the extra plants we could grow!
@@cherylmart6338 It would be amazing to do that, no need to protect anything in winter either
Hi Jason. Good to see you are back! Garden looks good considering the summer. Have you considered Pachysandra Terminalis for the dry shade area? It is pretty much indestructible.
@@neilyenny hi Neil, thanks yeah it's not been great but still got some decent growth. I have never heard of it but just looked it up and it seems ideal. Cheers
@@jasonspalmparadise It can be invasive. But we have heard that with loads of other plants before! Will cover the ground though.
Good to see you back and a great update on the garden. Its really filled out this season!
@@YorkshireTropics cheers, it's getting there now. Just need to fill in the gaps with stuff. It's part I find hardest, trying to find plants that fit in small gaps.
I really enjoyed your video, beautifully connected to nature :) Subscribed!
@@EmmasNatureEscapes thanks I appreciate it
If you want pups from tetra panx put spade in roots that's what I understand
@@Harry-qy5gn I heard that too,i will give it a go thanks
@@jasonspalmparadiseI don’t have an established T Tex, just about 7 1st year plants grown from rhizome. So I’m not an expert by any means!! But I’d be cautious about forcing it to spread by severing the roots as I understand that once they pop they just can’t stop, so will be great for you initially but will lead to problems later on. Thinking about it, I’m a bit worried now that my young plants will be prolific spreaders as they were propagated by rhizome division…
@@palmsexoticsuk2194 I really want to have some more around the garden, but your right I will probably regret it in the long run. It still has no pups yet
Great vid thanks for the valuable insights
@@GrowTropicalMK cheers mate
Good to see you back on the videos, your garden looking really good 👍
@@jimspalmsuk5098 Cheers Jim, it's not exactly where I want it but it is getting there year by year
@@jasonspalmparadise It all takes time 👍
Good to see yoy back Jason I was wondering where you've gone. Ive had mostly success, albeit it slow growth overall. Ive started to build up a decent collection of agaves and mangaves now and finally got round to ordering the stone for my "arid" bed. Biggest loss was a stupid mistake, I moved my eucalyptus baby blue and then onviously never watered it enough and it lost every leaf, but like you im thinking of trying my washantonia in the ground which was labelled as an acer at the garden centre and reduced to 2 pound, I swiped it straight away and never said a word absolute bargain 😂😂
@@Knapper94 yeah it's been slow this year, hopefully winter will be kind. Putting the stone on the arid bed will really finish it off. Nice bargain, can't beat that 🤣 iv seen them survive with no protection in a garden near me.
Fantastic update Jason Do you dig up the Begonia luxurians for Winter, or do you cover it up in situ?
@@albey1816 thanks, I dig it up and bring it into the house
When are you doing an end of Summer update Jason?
@@albey1816 I will try to in the next couple of weeks, iv got out of the habit of doing them.

I'm a new subscriber and appreciate the palm advice. I have a couple to plant into the ground. So hopefully they like their spot.
Thanks for subscribing 😁. Palms tend to like most conditions so I'm sure they will be fine.
@jasonspalmparadise thanks. 😀 I have a mature cordyline the height of my bedroom window. On a clay base. So hopefully the Trachy's like the change. I have a large butia capitata but that is in a 130L container. It is my most expensive plant ever. 🌴
@@GardenMyselfHappy make sure the drainage is good if your on clay, one thing palms don't like is wet feet in winter. Iv seen the expensive butias, great palms.
@@jasonspalmparadise thanks 😊 will add some grit and coir should help.
How old are these?
Been in ground about 3 years
Thanks. Just bought a bunch and plan on planting in next few days. Finding so much varying information on these
@@kylehobart5194 just keep them well watered for first year and they will just do their thing
I am more concerned about root depth and expansion. I'd like to place a row at the back corner of my house. However the septic tank is about 5' from that location. I see some websites claim roots go 8' deep. I also see some say they will just expand forever if you let them whereas others claim they will only get to about 4' wide
The rest will go between fence and a concrete patio with about 7' space between.
Looks great. I started off with 1 Brown Turkey in ground 2 years ago. I now have 10 fig trees, all different varieties, most in pots. I love them! 🙂
Wow you really do love figs. It can get to be a big collection when there is a plant you really like.
Iv done the same as you looks loads better
It does, iv noticed they have started growing back already, so need to keep on top of it
