Game Boy Macros are a fun project to make. So many DS Lites got broken hinges, or sometimes (like the case of this one), the DS cart reader stops working. This helps make them useful again AND makes them look pretty cool. One thing to note: This still does not allow them to play GB/GBC games, only GBA. Here is where all the Macro items are from Boxy Pixel: www.boxypixel.com/collections/ds-lite-...

You made some good points and observations, but IMHO you missed the biggest quick indicator method for spotting a fake. Check the cartridge strip/pins. For all but 2 OEM titles the real deal will be a brownish color and the fakes are white. The only 2 exceptions to this are Ogre Battle 64 and Resident Evil 2. They have white OEM strips/pins.
Thanks for the info! There are a few other great ways people have mentioned in the comments, too. Might almost be worth making a sequel video of this one to cover lots of the ways that were missed.
''Both of these are fake''BRAH! 😐
I bought a fake unwittingly on ebay back when i was in high school. This was prior to diamond pearl release. The game is perfectly playable in every way except one: diamond pearl and platinum dont see it.
You said you'd tell the difference between players choice and regular and you didn't
I listened back at it and I see what you mean. Sorry about that, sounds kind of misleading. What I meant was we would go over the differences in them compared to the fake one. If you just need to know the difference between Player's Choice version and regular version, based on what I can tell from what I have: Player's Choice will have a letter after the two numbers on the label stamp Player's Choice board's Nintendo will have the oval around it, plus no date next to it, while the regular version does not have the oval but does have the date Player's Choice version on the board is AGB-E02-30, while the regular version is AGB-E02-20 There are a few other differences, like where some of the capacitors are placed on the board, but the markings are the easiest ways to check.
Always love me some new games for my GBC
I just looked at my real copy of leaf green and there isn't a stamped number on the front label. So yeah like the other commenter said. The only way to make sure is to look at the board.
You people say scam when its not even full price and works like a charm lol
What do you mean "you people"!!? I say it's a scam because if you look on FB Market or other places where there can be untrustworthy people, there are lots of people trying to sell these counterfeits as the real deal. A scam is defined as "a dishonest scheme" or "fraud" by Oxford dictionary. If someone is being dishonest about what they're selling, it's a scam. It's not as bad if someone marks it as what it is, but a lot don't. I understand some don't know THEY were scammed into thinking they got the real thing.
@@gumptendo that’s why you speak to the seller and negotiate or don’t buy it’s pretty simple , no one is forcing your hand . And the you people refers to gullible individuals that wanna cry because they do zero research or go into a private sell with complete trust.
Which you bring up the point why videos like this are needed. There are people that don't know what to look for to prevent being scammed. Videos like this help teach people how to find an authentic item if that's what they're wanting.
@@gumptendo adults shouldn’t have to be told but if they do then I don’t mind if they get scammed
What you mentioned previously, though, was about people who do zero research. If someone finds this video, that's a step in the direction of doing research. No one deserves to be scammed. Watch someone like Kitboga and you'll see the extent scammers are willing to go to take money from someone maliciously. Some of these video games can be worth quite a bit, so if someone doesn't do research, yes, it is their fault. But the ones who scammed them were at fault, too, for misrepresenting what they were selling. Let's use a very possible scenario as an example: Little Johnny really wants a real copy of Earthbound. It's ALL he talks about, but he doesn't have $400 to get it. His very kind grandmother decides she's going to find it for him as a surprise for his birthday. She finds a deal on eBay for only $300 and gets it. On Johnny's birthday a few months later, he opens it and is disappointed. At that point, the scammer already made off with the money and there's no way to be reimbursed. Johnny is sad and his grandmother feels bad for him. Yes, this is a theoretical scenario, but I'm willing to bet it happens more than people would hope.
This is so cool 😮
There is a third thing to watch out for. Real boards in aftermarket shells or with aftermarket stickers. This happens if a shell/sticker has been trashed and the person replaced it but the game itself is real. This is why popping them open is always the best option.
This is true. I even have a couple GB games with new stickers and one even in a BoxyPixel metal shell.
Safest way to sure is if it is able to connect to coliseum/xD (but that grind to post game)
Do these fakes play just as good as the originals?
"Sometimes" is probably the best answer I have. Depending on where you get the fakes, some are so poorly made they are garbage, but some do work just fine. It's always a gamble.
Mmmmmm cheese.
Behold the power of cheese!
Do you think it’s a risk to buy a refurbished, n64 console on Amazon.? I see a lot of mixed reviews.
There are some refurbs on Amazon that would be okay, but expect to have to spend a bit more than the average going rate for the system. They do offer a 90 day warranty on ones like this that may be worth it for paying the premium: www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-System-Console-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B07F2N1VNY It's always worth tossing into Google something like "retro game stores near me" to see if there are any near you that might have any retro systems and games in stock that you want to get.
@@gumptendo i actually orderd a GameCube from Amazon, and so far it works just fine with some stains other then that it does work and play games.
Does unscrewing the housing and taking out the chip and everything like that break the cart? Like does handling the board inside not just render it unplayable? Sorry if this is a dumb question I haven’t messed around much with this stuff before 😅
As long as you're grounded out so you don't zap the chips with static, there's very little harm that can be done by just taking it apart and looking at / handling the board.
About the Controller Pak losing data from a dead battery, i can recommend to keep an eye on the CPAK2040 project. It's an open source project which utilizes the cheap Raspberry Pico 2040 and an inexpensive PCB inside a 3D Printed Case. In the standard configuration you can cycle between 10 virtual memory cards with the button, the savegames will be stored in flash memory which doesn't need a battery. You can also plug it into USB to upgrade the firmware or import and export your saves. It was about 8€ to build one myself, compared to used Controller Paks which go for 12€ on eBay in Germany.
cool! well done. that was a simple yet interesting diagnosis. cant wait to see whatchu have planned for the GBAs
Glad you enjoyed it! We have big plans for the GBAs. It will most likely end up being a two parter since we'll have to get new shells and displays for them, too.
I do wonder what stressed the board enough to have a break right around the pin. What a strange place for a fracture.
I was wondering the same thing. Such a weird place for a connection to break when there's no sign of liquid damage. Usually, N64 games break under that plastic piece. Only thing I can think is maybe it was dropped pretty hard at some point and that specific pin absorbed the impact for the board.
@@gumptendo With the plastic shell and metal heat shield I could only imagine it was a manufacturing defect, honestly.
That would probably make a lot more sense. I looked a bit online and that sadly seems to be a somewhat common issue with Paper Mario.
The title made me think this would be fixing a software bug rather than damaged hardware. Still interesting though.
I get what you mean. It's so weird that a slight hardware issue causes debug data to show on the N64. I'm just glad it was an easy fix.
seeing a wild .hack fan is surprising but cool! (sorry for unrelated reply)
Exactly why i watched the video
“Sideways wifi symbol” bro that’s a speaker
Ha! After I said that it was a sideways wifi symbol, I thought to myself "why didn't I just say sound symbol?", but figured it was descriptive enough so left it. We just upgraded our Internet so that day I had Internet and wifi on my brain.
Your voice sounds similar to Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory. It’s really selling this video for me.
Glad my voice doesn't sound like nails on a chalk board! lol Sheldon's cool, so I'll take that as a compliment. Thanks!
Why would you do this on a phone instead of a PC? Seems like extra steps with needing that app.
This works extremely well on the PC, but I was showing a real world field use of it. This example is for if someone is going to garage sales, thrift stores, meeting from FB Market, or other places where a computer would be tough to bring around.
@@gumptendonotebook, laptop
if the controller port worked I'd get this asap. would be sick is it a hardware limitation or could software be added in the future that'd let you play og cartridges and let you use controllers?
I'm guessing it's a hardware limitation. The Joey N64 acts as an external drive, so playing the ROM is pretty much just playing it from a USB drive.
I have a real copy but I don't know how to replace the dead battery.
There are two points on the battery that need to be desoldered, then the areas cleaned and the replacement battery soldered into place. The battery needs to be placed the same direction the previous one was. The batteries cost about $2-3 each. If you have a retro store near you and don't have soldering equipment, they may replace the battery for around $10 for you (at least the ones around here are that price).
@@gumptendo I live in Pennsylvania. I don't know if I have something like that in my area.
Is there really an advantage to this over checking the signs on the physical cart?
In some cases, yes. I have a few games where the shells were damaged beyond repair, so I've had to replace shells and labels. The best option is to ALWAYS take the cartridge apart and look at the board inside. If that's not a possibility or if you are in a hurry, a tool like this would make sense. It's a lot faster to pop the N64 cart on that tool and take a look than to take the game apart. On the other hand, for GB/GBC/GBA, it would be faster to pop a game apart and look at the shell than use a tool because it's one screw.
When they announce Mario Maker my first thought was to make a very hard level with a hidden shortcut because finding the hidden stuff is what's fun for me
I know what you mean. I enjoy the hunt for hidden blocks sometimes. It's rewarding figuring out some of these levels on my own without using the online tools.
why not use the level viewer tool?
I use that tool as a last resort. Half of the fun of garbage levels to me is figuring them out by myself.
@@gumptendo oh I get it
Just as a new watcher bro I think it would help if your face was a little bigger on stream. Good video cheers!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it and I will definitely make my mug a bit larger for the next video. I wasn't sure if people would rather see the disappointing levels or disappointment on my face, but I guess the answer is both!
i didnt even notice his facecam until i read your comment lol
I was always hoping for the day tools like this would finally be created. Now I just hope there will be some for more systems like the Mega Drive.
I know what you mean. I have the FunnyPlaying BurnMaster for GB/GBC/GBA for backing up save data and writing homebrew games to flash, but that (as of the last time I used it) doesn't give you a good solid idea if the game is real or not. Ones like the Joey N64 really take the guess work out of it without taking the cartridge apart.
Them Jordans are FAKE!
Ha! I see you're a connoisseur of memes!
@@gumptendo No but. For real. That looks very helpful. I, myself have the GB Operator. I just wish there was a portable version.
I have a gold front pokemon silver gameboy game with a silver back. Wanting to know if it's real.
The Gameboy game was supposed to be the same color on front and back. It's possible it's a real game with different shell on it. You'd have to pop that one apart to check the board.
I wouldn't mind buying a fake if they didn't price it the same as a real one. I wouldn't pay more than $20 for a fake cartridge
A lot of the fakes you can get from AliExpress for $5-10. Some even with free shipping, but you have to wait 2-3 weeks for it to arrive. It's common for fakes to have save data go corrupt and sometimes that even bricks the games, plus some of the fakes you can't even get past certain points, like Pokemon GB/GBC, it's a gamble if going up against the Elite Four will break your save or not.
Fuck fakes. That is all.
@@BigHushAffiliate Yeah, really sucks people can get old games for less than 100 bucks??? What a wild take...
@@montyvr6772Not sure if you are for fakes or not. 😅 I wouldnt pay 5 bucks for a fake if it glitches in the middle of a game.
@@BigHushAffiliatei havent played enough reproduction carts to know whether or not thats a frequent problem in bootlegging videogames
this is actually pretty cool
Yeah, it's awesome some of the technology coming out to use as tools for the retro consoles.
It's cool but you can't detect it over eBay LOL. Once I get my item it's already too late basically
guess its more for local store and markets
Definitely more local, but a lot of eBay sellers have ways in place to get refunds. I only buy from eBay sellers that have an insane amount of positive reviews.
Way to go Knucklehead! No its not on fb you have no buyer protection, on ebay and amazon you have buyer protection.
we need more things like this. so long to the ways of guessing based off art, or opening them up and risking damage.
Totally agree. BennVenn makes devices for some of the retro handheld systems, but not for other home consoles.
another easy way to tell if the cartridge is real without taking it apart is to shine a light inside of the slot on the cartridge, you will see numbers molded into the plastic if it is a real cart
Great advice! Some of the NES fakes are starting to add the F and B with numbers on the front and back shell parts, but haven't seen that yet on SNES or N64.
Imagine making levels so unfair you have to cheat yourself to make it, shame shame on the level devs
I totally get what you're saying, but I wish level creation could be done a bit differently. I'd like to see a way to share level creations with friends before they're uploaded to other people, then have just one person finish the level by themselves that has access to the shared level. That would make level collabs a lot easier and it would make it so people who are awesome at making levels but terrible at playing able to make their levels and still upload them.
isn't this better than nothing, though? you at least have an affordable option to play the games on real hardware, no? as long as they work..
I do not endorse pirating or counterfeits, but something like Everdrive in my opinion would be the best deal instead of getting the individual fakes if you want to play the games.
Great video man!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
really cool but $100? at that point I'd just buy the original cartridge for way cheaper
Yeah, it is a bit pricey. I got it because I really wanted to see what a "new" SNES game from a major company was like.
Gotta love that nostalgia tax.
That's a great name for it! They know nostalgia sells.
Sounds cool
Darknesque was insane!
Yeah, that one was pretty insane. Based on the full recording of that level, it was 46 minutes to get through it. I spared you all a lot of time!
I found that first level fun to watch you sort out the way to the end. Very entertaining. I would have lost my patience early on.
Glad you enjoyed it. Levels like that are always fun to play AND make great content! lol
tbh if it works i could care less i just wanna play the game lol
That is perfectly fine. This video is just to help people who want the authentic game to know what to look for. If you just want to play the game, it's so much cheaper going with the cheap counterfeits from AliExpress. Don't pay anymore than around $10-15 for one, otherwise you'll be getting ripped off for the fake.
I have a game in question. It has a gold front instead of silver?
We have the Pokemon Gold video here if you need to see a comparison: th-cam.com/video/RDSEqj7nDrA/w-d-xo.html
Honestly these fakes have gotten really good, if I had a gbc/gbc compatible console I would buy it
If you do get one and buy the counterfeits, at least make your wallet happy and get them directly from AliExpress instead of these people on other platforms selling them for five times the price.
This is a great mod. I recently put one of these together using a GBC that had a bad screen and sound issues. I went with Atomic Purple, black buttons and an amber power LED for mine.
That sounds like a pretty cool color combo! GBC is such a great console to mod. So many combos of parts you can use.
Oh god! I plan on buying an N64 by 2025, I hope my entire N64 isn’t a bootleg.
Sadly, that is a risk you have to take with buying retro games. Just know what you are looking for and how to tell if it's real!
Note, this is my first time looking into this but you can also notice a difference in the connectors where you blow into the cartridge, if they look white between the little connectors, it’s obviously a new motherboard. Hope this helps you guys spot them easier and faster.
That's true most of the time. I have seen games like Resident Evil 2 and Ogre Battle 64 with the lighter colored boards, but haven't seen a fake yet that is the dark brown color. Best way is just to pop the game apart and take a look inside.
@@gumptendo Those are the only 2 exceptions. For all other titles it holds up. I agree that taking apart is best, but checking the cartridge strip is arguably the best of quick methods.
