FF7 PC - 100% SCM Speedrun - World Record: 14:49:49 (Part 2/2)
Part 1/2 was here: th-cam.com/video/vwCiAT1fimM/w-d-xo.html
Streamed live at twitch.tv/dashretro
Full category: FF7 PC 100% No Slots, No Warps (Turbo, SCM)
Let's break that down:
Final Fantasy 7, Steam version on PC
100% - docs.google.com/document/d/1Q13sJFgGpeXigbZdY7f-dLYuhx4LcPYIyYvsenfYJY0/edit
No Slots - Cait Sith's Level 2 Limit Break "Slots" is banned
No Warps - Wrong warps are banned
Turbo - I use Steam Input for Turbo functionality on circle meaning I can hold L2 and it auto-mashes circle
SCM - "System Clock Manipulation" refers to the fact that FF7 on PC initializes its "SystemRNG" state by pulling the Unix timestamp of the current system time of the PC as the game boots. From then on, all RNG is controlled by the game. BattleRNG is seeded based on SystemRNG and very little changes SystemRNG between battles, meaning it is possible to create a route of behavior based on a specific initial RNG point (i.e. a certain date/time to boot the game at). This run takes advantage of this and as such is in the "SCM" category. More details in the run commentary itself.

So if we skip two fights prior to a boss do we fight 3 bosses? Could be fun to get 3x the drops after some fights
great video, one watch and i knew what to look for and do. gg dash keep up the good work man
Hi Dash , your tutorial is helping me a lot , thanks really. I got a question about the livesplite, Is there an autosplitter we could use for the game or we got to do it manually? And maybe is a silly question but It is safe to upscale the game with the emulator for the run or we can have problems with the game if we do it? Thanks !
@@eldoctorgero Check the FF7 speedrun discord (linked on the SRC page) for an autosplitter. I think one exists for emulator yeah. For upscaling, it is fine but will make some of the visual cues look different. Glad you are enjoying!
@DashRetro thanks again for your help ! Sure! I will check it!
I was practicing speedrunning for the first time and I think you can softlock here... After talking to Barret to get out of jail and if you run out (I might have done the jail skip, not sure) there's no blood or RedXII on the left side of the screen and if you go back to the jail there's only barret turning back and forth with no Tifa. :O
@@Isefen Very interesting! I've never seen that particular softlock, but it does sound like FF7
I was playing this once way back when and had to battle the first boss twice! Now I know why, lol.
I guess he was right all along. Rebirth skip could lead to a 5:30 :-D
Great find!!
"Stepos" 😆
Thank you very much for this video, it’ll be hugely helpful when I replace the caps on my GameCube down the road.
They totally need to remaster this game. A modern version of this would be a great game.
FINALLY remembered to make a separate save slot to test this out and see how easy it was (we're talking YEARS upon YEARS since this was discovered). and i am dumbfounded and in shock it really was that easy to pull off. unfortunately, for whatever reason (prolly that im not speedrunning it) i cant just cant skip midgar. oh, and theres a handful of lets say "decent" equipment to be picked up. cheers OP
@@matttrent946 Yeah, casually, I would absolutely not recommend this skip because you miss out on a Mystile as well as both Barret and Cait's ultimate weapons
@@DashRetro LMFAO, i never took note of that; as polar opposite the two of them are, both their Ultimate Weapons are found in the same unrevisitable section of the game. i wonder how intentional that was on the developers part. and yeah, i need my W-Item ASAP (Bone Village apparently has one if you miss it, but i dont like to mess w/ routine all that much)
Amazing explanation
hey man my gc has an issue i hope you could feel out. I got a xeno chip i installed in mine to run swiss and my panda dvd works perfectly. I got some new swiss dvds with purple colored read sides and they wont read at all, no disc. Sometimes my gc tries and on others it gives up quickly. All my nintendo discs read easily. Its only these new dvds, i suspect the culprit is the color underside since the panda dvd is clear like nintendos. And capacitors that arent fully showing the issue cause theyre burned cds. I ran the laser to 75ohms and it still wouldnt read them. So its back at 200 ohms where it started and reads the panda dvd well. today was humid tho and for the first time panda dvd wouldnt read at first. Some breath and patence it worked again.
incrível
lol youtube thinks it the remake that's weird but edit also congrats dash even if you lost 14 on chickens
DOL-101 100-300 ohms, DOL-001 300-600 ohms..
my dol-001 was factory at 200 ohms
First, thankyou very much for all this big big effort , it is great that we can learn how to speed run ff7 or at least take a look on how to do it. So I downloaded big shoes and connected to an emulator (psxfin) in my case. The thing is I dont get the same Adresses and fraction and directions and all crazy little things you got in your chart. It is different in big shoes , it gives me another data . Is there a way to get the same chart you got ? Anyway, thankyou again for this videos abd for keeping ff7 classic alive!!!
@@eldoctorgero The data table I have up is a feature of the BizHawk emulator called "RAM Watch." psxfin may have something similar, but I'm not sure.
Ah yes I saw that option in bizhawk but it didnt give me all the data that you have in the chart. i will investigate more in that emulator. Anyway , thankyou very much
2:37 cat lol
Bro you have no idea how much this has helped me with the stepcount ive never understood it properly this is a very in depth guide thanks man massive help 😎🤙🏻
Hi there! Loved the video and was curious about two things: What sort of camera/magnifier are you using to work on things? I have really bad eyesight even with my glasses and struggle to see the smaller caps. Also, do you happen to remember what size soldering tip you're using? Regardless, I really loved this video. You've earned a new sub with it!
@@casey_shame The camera is an old JVC camcorder going into an Elgato CamLink. I don't particularly recommend the CamLink though, there shoukd ve much cheaper options out there that work just as well or better. I don't really know the soldering tip size, it came with the pack of tips you can bundle with KSGER T12 soldering station
@DashRetro I actually found a similar unopened tip in my toolbox this morning that appears to be the same size, so that should be good. Thanks for responding so quickly with the camera answer. I may look into some sort of microscope that can be viewed via hdmi then. Again, I appreciate the response.
@@casey_shame For sure! My buddy made a review of a few different scopes which may give you an idea: th-cam.com/video/nPdmFmjZ2Qc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kjmW9K4AxujPFKCU
@@DashRetro I really appreciate that I'll be sure to check that out!
I just saw this for the first time while watching the current world record speedrunner do it and I was not even aware of it being a thing.
where do i go to get the world map. like how u do. to where u can see the triangles there is, line of code, etc. learning and i wanna see where u got that from. like is there a way to look at it like u do or. at 1:36, that part. of the map that has red blue etc lines. where do i go for that and line of cods? still no idea how to yuffie warp eitehr yet. Help would be lovely. ty for who ever reads this.
hey, if i posted a video of my issue would anyone have a look? ive tried all 3 different ways. only way i got CLOSE was mixing 2 different parts in one. and it stops me still when i finally get under the rock.
You should apply for a PHD with that work.
Now this is the kinda thing I love to hide into the depths of my brain pockets. Thanks for putting in all this work!
I attempted this today. Removal was easy enough, but by golly is it difficult to solder the new ones in. There is just so little surface area to solder to. I think I’ll just buy another drive from eBay. I’ve installed picoboots, done Dreamcast battery swaps, GBA battery swaps and could not get this done.
It's pretty tight work, but I think removal is waaay harder than putting new ones on, you can do it! The biggest thing I think is to have only 1 pad prepared with solder, then heat that pad and put the cap in. Then, solder the other 2 legs by putting wet solder on your tip and tapping them. That's my advice at least, hope it helps.
@@DashRetrothank you. Turns out on the one I gave up on I was attempting to solder on the wrong one! Once I tried with the proper sized one I got it, and finished the whole board. Some of them are lifted off the board or a little crooked but it works flawlessly! I have another GameCube not reading disks on the way and more capacitor kits so I can hone my skills.
Interesting indeed.
18:38 Ah yes, this is Gen Z's favorite part of the video because there is "no cap".
This really gives a whole new level of appreciation for how complex and skilled a FF7 speedrun actually is.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaand I still don't know what capacitors I'm meant to buy.
console5.com/store/gamecube-optical-drive-pcb-cap-kit-revs-1-4.html
@@DashRetro This is for NTSC-U Gamecube?
I’ve changed the caps and mine still won’t read any suggestions
Did you also check the resistance on the potentiometer?
what happens if youre late at 0 frames? is it 254 menu buffers? lol
The first part of the calculation is Hito%16, so having to do a backup of up to 15 is possible, but there is usually a better backup available if you are ready for it. The document I use now, shown in part 15b, has those backups provided.
Awesome! I will this skip later.
Wow these are bangers this is great
Thank you so muuch!
Hey man, thanks for sharing this info. I used your guide and successfully fixed a Gamecube, which gave me the confidence to purchase a dozen broken consoles to do the same to. Thank you, all the best.
Crap, Though it was a new video, I hate when people wrap the around the controller
I had to go to sleep around seventh hour and upload seems fucked (only 12 hours) but based on thumbnail all was green until 15hr mark and Kiss of Death took almost 17 minutes? Holy shit! I would've destroyed something in my vicinity.
Mentally, I fell apart around 12:30 and slowly lost my whole lead, so eith a good kiss of death, it would have only been a 1 minute PB
@@DashRetro Still I admire your tenacity and perseverance. I love FFVII and have casually beaten it 10 or more times, but the stuff you do is unbelieveable. I got interested in FFVII speedruning during that SGDQ run by Ajneb, but it was you and your TH-cam series that got me hooked. I honestly think you deserve both Any% and Hundo records. Good luck!
@@lechdabrowski3614 Thanks a ton, really glad to hear it! I was actually live in the audience for that ajneb run years before I started running myself :D
3:16 I've had the initial loud clicking sound on several systems in conjunction with it working after warming up just 5 minutes, so I think the capacitors should be changed in those cases as well.
Fetty Wap tried telling us the answer to this question years ago in the beginning of half of his songs but nobody cared smh
If its only saving a minute why is this even a thing? Just make it a rule to leave the names alone lmao
Why make it a rule? Why not easily save a minute?

@1:46; I think I know why the textbox only renders 5 characters tue first frame, and 6 characters afterwards, though you may need to checj this against frames where it wraps back to the beginning. That is the newline character drops a line - and it's a character (Often "/n", but not necessarily always that.). That first 5 characters it's rendering? Right after the name "C", it's rendering a newline character to drop down to the next frame.
I thought this at first as well, but new lines don't count toward character count. If a character's name is longer than 5 characters, you'll still see only 5 characters on the first frame despite not hitting the first line break yet, also
@@DashRetro Huh - maybe they intentionally limit it because they have to bring up the dialogue box in the same frame, and so it's a subtle timing thing? That is weird that it's not that newline thing though.
This channel needs more subs. Full stop.
Dude, we should have known that your brain wasn't having it today when you named Barret 'A' 🤣
You are the ONLY person to properly explain the gas chamber inputs thank you so much
This is such a sick video. I love this kind of stuff. I'm glad to say that I am in the <1000 sub club.
thats about a 10% benefit
dude,, you are a computer pro. Nice.
I mean tbh, you at the very least played and finished Remake, and gave it a shot. FF7R is definitely not for everyone, but I respect you for attempting to enjoy it. Your opinion is as valid as the next person's :)
What you never thought you wanted to know but totally wanted to know.
