I liked doom 3 when it was new though I was also underwhelmed as it was nowhere near as good as the older games. Same goes for the new dooms. They're better than 3 but lack any tactical depth because you can just instaheal whenever you want. Classic doom is a real combat puzzle game

The plot of the game is based on legend which says that if the Orloj stop working, a disaster or a war will come for the nation, which in Hrots case is a horde of mutans invading Czechoslovakia, that is why we must we must repair it at the end of the game to stop it

  • @judsongaiden9878

Socialism, like fascism (and all other forms of collectivism), can only be implemented and enforced through authoritarian oppression and coercion. Ayn Rand and Robert Heinlein would both back me up on that. 7:56 "Interloper." I see what you did there. That was a Half-Life reference, wasn't it? 8:01 Notice how the shotgun is reverse pump-action in the style of the RMB-93. The RMB-93, apart from being reverse pump-action, is also top-fed and inverted. 9:19 Why do you throw 'nades right-handed if you're already using your right hand to wield weapons? This is something S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Borderlands get right. In S.T.A.L.K.E.R., you wield weapons and toss 'nades right-handed, but you select a 'nade the same way you'd select a weapon. In Borderlands, you toss 'nades using your left hand while wielding weapons with your right hand. Those methods both work and make sense. Doing it the way HROT does it (lots of other games do it this way too) makes it seem like your character forgot that they have a left hand. Left-handedness was verboten in the Soviet Union, but we're talking weapon-wielding practicality here. Screw the so-called "rules!" And screw the rulers too! 17:43 / 23:18 The Czechs and Slovaks are also known for their excellent beer. 23:18 Czech and Slovak beercraft is as reputable as Germany's beercraft. The original pilsner (a word that means "citizen of Pils"), the style most associated with Czech and Slovak beer culture, was invented by a German brewer in Pils when the Czech Republic was known as Bohemia (hence "Bohemian-style beer"). 25:48 Ezekiel 38,2: "Behold! I am against you, Gog of the land of Magog, chief prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal." 28:09 That's a nationalist ideal, not socialist. From a nationalist's perspective, nationalism IS Resistance, especially against imperialism (or globalism which is the same thing). Also, I should point out that I mean CIVIC nationalism. 28:17 A socialist country CAN'T be "autonomous." Autonomy, also known as "autarky," is a nationalist ideal incompatible with socialist internationalism, fascist imperialism, or corporate globalism.

This was a fantastic review. It reminded me just how much I love video games. And that's one of the highest praises I can give because I love video games insanely much. And the only other thing that reminds me so well of how much I like video games is playing video games. I like how you tried to capture the feel of what the game wants to showcase. Its love for its inspirations and culture. Which in turn inspires me to continue making games and showing off the things that I love. What I put into games is certainly very different than HROT. I like bright fantastical things a lot more. But what you showed of HROT here does remind me of the love for inspirations and makes me strive to look more into things that I like. Those playfull secrets like the model.train are glorious (and I'll probably steal the recipes as rewards thing). I think I'll end it like this: There's a few books I feel I would REALLY like. So I should get to reading them sometime to find more inspiration on what I do.

I grew up with many of the great first person shooters of the 90s, still love the graphics despite the evolution of it in more modern shooters. Many old shooters are "remade" or "repacked" with new engines, you know, 'ports' or so it's called... Wolfenstein 3D, Hexen (or was it Heretic?), BLOOD and many more were packaged/ported often if not only by fans communities to be platform-independent + removing bugs and making the graphics a little bit smoother but without removing the "crunchy" aspect as the author calls it. Never played "Minecraft" but maybe the aesthetics of that game is the only hope that younger people have the chance to stumble over those good old games despite being spoiled by nowadays HD graphics, like we all are, of course :)

  • @theblobconsumes4859

I'd imagine there's probably metaphors and symbolism to HROT's "narrative". Think of it like certain stories that don't seem to be about anything specifically, but hide things to say underneath a simple surface. You've gotten to a great place with analyzing it already, though I'd add that the elements of absurdity, mundanity and bleakness all clashing together probably hold some commentary on their own. Even if something doesn't intend to have many themes or any at all, it still has hidden meanings because we as humans accidentally communicate many things all the time. Hopefully someone actually from the Czech Republic and with knowledge of the history and culture can make a proper analysis of the game's themes and potential social commentary. I heard from certain Czech people who look at the art direction itself as having commentary on Czech culture.

28:05 Yes, it is a complete repulsion of socialist ideals, we don't like the ideas of collectivist ideologies in Czechia. At 28:45 there is even more intentional and ideologically motivated misinterpretation. The gritty aesthetics and the over the top Soviet symbolics are a caricature of how it feels to live in a socialist dystopia. And most importantly, the author of the game himself is anti-communist.

    • @Yeij

      1. i dont think you can speak for the entirety of the Czech Republic or eastern europe, but i understand the sentiment so im not gonna go more into your first point 2. this is an interpretation so of course its biased. im very much a leftist and looked at the game through that lens lol. i think i provided good enough reasons for my viewpoint, but that wasn't even the main point of my video. 3. gritty aesthetics and over-the-top symbolism of any ideology can be used to make any society look dystopian. soviets murals, statues, and architecture are famously prideful, but you could literally walk around washington DC and see all of the statues of presidents, wanna-be greek architecture, and war memorials, too. using your dystopian-game guidelines, i could create a game set in DC, make it bleak, and plaster mount rushmores all over the place. i think its unfair to see soviet pride as dystopian when i can walk through virginia and see statues of former slave owners. im not a tankie, i think the soviet union's done terrible things, but it's possible to be socialist and still be critical of the soviet union or any socialist regime. socialism is not inherently evil. authoritarianism is rooted in narcissism, greed, and an obsession with control. 4. ive read this statement like three times now without having ever seen the dev ever claim so themselves. if they are, then so be it, but literally, all they post on twitter is stuff related to their game or the occasional Czech life post. without hearing or reading the dev state so themselves, im gonna assume anybody saying this is just because Spytihnyev's Czech and therefore assume theyre anti-communist only because of their nationality. i write this in the hopes that it'd satisfy you to not bother anybody else in the comments rather than hoping you understand more of my perspective. i dont plan on going more into this. political discourse is a cesspool and this video was about how cool hrot is because of its implementation of Czech culture. anyways, thanks for watching and bothering to leave a comment.

@@Yeij 1) Of course I can't speak for everyone, but I'm pretty sure that in this case I can represent Czechs and Eastern Europeans in a much more accurate way than you, an American millenial that has never lived in this part of the world nor has a family that has lived under this regime. Also, both our government and the opposition are almost exclusively right-wing, so I think most people from my country share my point of view. 2) I respect that it's your interpretation, but the way you portrayed the topic it seemed like you're trying to say that this was Spytihněv's intention, not your interpretation, which is disingenuous. 3) It is not unfair to see "Soviet pride" as dystopian, it's very fair and very factual. You need to realize that the suffering and brainwashing was extreme, there was secret police on every corner, people snitched on each other, the cities were unkempt, there were lines of poor people in front of shops that only sold bread and bad quality meat, if you said something bad about the government you were kidnapped by the secret police and tortured. If I was a Western "liberal" leftist, I would feel offended, because you, a foreigner, are trying to falsely represent my country's history, how my people think and behave, and to relativize their suffering under socialism, which could be understood as some sort of cultural colonization. But I don't think like that and my priority here is not to make you suddenly unbiased and more credible, my priority is to counter the lies you're telling about how Czech people feel about socialism. 4) You can listen to this interview with Spytihněv, at 13:00 and onwards he, not they, talks about how dark socialism was when he was growing up and how it influenced the game's aesthetics, he specifically says socialism, pronounced as "socík". modrak.podbean.com/e/112-hrot/ I'm not bothering anyone, I'm explaining things that I understand better than you. You're not oppressed, I'm not attacking you, I'm only here to share a point of view of a Czech person, and to debate about these topics. So don't act like an offended Redditor, there is no need for that.

@@commie_remover i didnt mean to come off as rude, very sorry about that. it wasnt intentional to make spytihnyev's position my own. i appreciate that you do technically have more weight in speaking for eastern europeans, my only experience was visiting prague as a child. however, like i said there are still eastern europeans who would disagree with you. i know about how some elderly folk still reminisce on the soviet days, my dad has worked with many of them in ex-soviet satellite states and he's very much anti-soviet. also disco elysium exists, a game written by a very left-leaning estonian. i was analyzing the game from my view, which is why it may have come off as revisionist. throughout my studies ive been taught to present information from my own eyes, so i wasnt trying to say that spytihnyev himself shares my opinion but instead using his art to explain how i came to the conclusion that i did. im not denying those things that the soviet union did. like i said i think they did terrible things. thank you for linking the interview, i appreciate that a lot. its been a stressful day so i didnt try to sound like an arrogant redditor, so again sorry for my tone. i do enjoy comments like these because it kinda means to me my video was worth some conversation even if it was as messy as the we're having. however, i want to clear up one thing: please dont group me with millenials. im 22 lol

@@Yeij There are older people that feel nostalgic towards the days they were young, they remember the days when they still had things to explore, they remember how they chased girls and boys, how they were full of life and how they did things for the first time. When you're old, you remind yourself of your younger days, because you know that you've already explored almost everything and that there are not many things left to surprise you and liberate you from the boring repetitiveness and loneliness of being old. But when those people are reminded of how they had to wait 5 hours in line in front of a shop to buy three bananas at Christmas, because at other times they weren't available, how poor quality the food was, how their colleagues and classmates snitched on them, how they couldn't attend their dream university because their parents weren't members of the party, how they had to buy jeans from smugglers, how it was illegal to own records of Western rock bands, how they had to wait 7 years for their unsafe and uncomfortable car to be made, they will gladly say "zasraný komouši", which is translated to a deragoratory term about the regime that TH-cam won't let me post in English. And yes, there are a few younger Eastern Europeans who might feel differently towards communism, but I don't think it's a good argument, because there are also a few nazis, which doesn't mean that we like nazism just because there are a few idiots who like the idea of it. I don't see you as evil, I see you as naive. Yes, it sounds and is patronizing, because you Western people don't understand to what you believe in leads. We Eastern Europeans can see through what Western "liberal" politicians are advocating for, how reminiscent their policies are of marxism, how censorship, mass surveillance, forced unmeritocratic inclusion, gender ideology, hundreds of identities created to replace the idea of nation, how you see specific groups of people as oppressed and paint the majority population as their oppressors, lead to what our parents had to live through. We see countries like Britain, where there is a very limited freedom of speech, almost no right of self-defense, mass surveillance and government overreach in general, it's a déjà vu moment for us, because we see through these ideas and how it overlaps with the regime that was present in our own countries. And yes, I know what marxism is and what the theories are about, I've read the books and our schools teach us about that topic, but those theories always lead to the horrors that my people had to live through. Don't be sorry, I was arrogant too, because I'm used to leftists that refuse to have a debate that challenges their ideology. I thought that you're one of them, so I used that stereotype and acted accordingly.
