A gathering of the Sammani Tariqah during the Hawl (Urs) of the founder of the Tariqah, Shaykh Muhammad bin ʿAbd al-Karīm as-Sammān. This gathering took place in the Masjid Sabilus Sa’adah in Banjarbaru, Indonesia. There are many more gatherings that take place in Indonesia to commemorate his Hawl. This type of recital of the Burdah is renowned for its impressive use of hundreds of Terbang, a large Indonesian drum, all played in perfect harmony. I believe this gathering had 250 of these drums being played. May Allah be pleased with them.
The Tariqah was founded by the Qutb, Shaykh Muhammad bin ʿAbd al-Karīm as-Sammān al-Madanī. He was born in Madinah in 1718, where he studied the Dīn with his father until 1760, where he was sent to Cairo. Here, Shaykh Sammān would hold gatherings of Dhikr at the Maqam of Imam al-Husayn (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) which would attract many people, making him more well known.
He was a Murīd of Shaykh Mustafa al-Bakrī of the Khalwatiyyah Order, who lived in Cairo. He remained under him until Shaykh Mustafa’s passing. Shaykh Sammān then established the Tariqah Sammaniyyah, which spread across Egypt and to Sudan, where Shaykh Ahmad at-Tayyib and his descendants would establish the Tariqah as a major Order in the region.
He then returned back to Madinah after his father’s death and took leadership of his Zawiyah in Madinah, which was next to the Maqam of Sayyiduna Hamzah. From here, many of his students would study with him and gain Ijazah from him to spread the Tariqah. Some of his Murīds included the aforementioned Shaykh Ahmad, Shaykh Siddiq bin Umar Khan, Shaykh ʿAbd as-Samad al-Falimbani, Shaykh Muhammad Nafis al-Banjarī and the man credited for spreading the Order to Indonesia, Shaykh Muhammad Arshad al-Banjarī.
The Order spread to Indonesia by travellers to Madinah who would do Bay’ah with the Shaykh and bring back the Order. It was also through the efforts of these blessed Shuyukh mentioned above. Later, the Sultan of Palembang financed the construction of a Zawiyah of the Order in Jeddah.
The Shaykh passed away in Madinah on Wednesday, 17th January 1776 and was buried in Jannah al-Baqī. Every year, gatherings take place all over Indonesia to commemorate his passing, called the Hawl. May Allah be pleased with him and raise his rank. Fatiha
