Thanks do much. 🤗 I made this video shortly after receiving the camera. One thing I have changed on mine is I changed the far right back button to turn cycle through subject detection subjects. I then limit the subject so it essentially turns subject detection on and off. You can read about how to do that in my companion article here. www.wardynskiphoto.com/gallery/how-to-set-up-the-canon-r5ii-straight-out-of-the-box/
How do you recover collections?
When you restore the catalog from a backup the collections will automatically be there.
You saved me. Thank you :-)
Glad to help. Thanks for sharing.
I know this is 2 years old but this may help some people. All my PSD files and jpeg files vanished from my PC and the Adobe Cloud. I thought for sure all was lost. Where I found the files was the last place I thought they would be. If you use Microsoft 365 included in it is OneDrive which makes backups of just about everything on your PC. I logged into my OneDrive account then clicked on "My Files". Low and behold there was a folder in the listing with the same name as the one on my Desktop. Apparently OneDrive made a backup of all my PS files that I wasn't aware of. Thank goodness it did. I selected the folder and pressed download and now years of hard work are restored. I dont understand why my Desktop folder was depleted and not simply copied by OneDrive..that is still a mystery to me. God bless and have a great day.😊
just came here to say THANK YOU!
Ahhhh, thanks so much!
This was very helpful :) Thank you! This may seem like a silly question but I've followed the video and put my Lightroom catalog and photos on an external hard-drive, I also want to back it up on another hard-drive like you show in the video, but I'm wondering would the back up atomically update or would I need to leave both hard drives plugged in? Also If I was to swap from my Mac to editing on the go on my Mac book I would simply just plug my hard drive into the Mac book to access the Lightroom catalog on my MacBook wouldn't I? Hop this makes sense?
Glad to help. To create a backup you will need to do it manually. I suggest using carbon copy closer to do it. While the backup is happening you need both drives connected. After it has completed I recommend disconnecting the backup drive so you do not get confused as to what drive you are working on. You are correct. If you put your Lightroom catalog and photos on an external drive, you can plug that into any computer room classic on it and pick up where you left off.
this adds a white layer mask, regardless of your selection. if you click the layer mask button, it will create a mask based on your selection, as intended. So this shortcut key is NOT the same as clicking the button.
Good point. It’s still worth creating for times when there isn’t a selection.
Thank you!
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Great job, I tried 3~4 different ways to organize my LR catalog in the past from various advises and turns out by year/month/date/extension(descriptions) is the best. I’m a landscape photographer, may be that’s why.
Glad to help. There are definitely other ways to do it but I find date and description works well for me.
Great video Mike. So I use my SanDisk External SSD to store my LRC catalog and all my images. When I exit LRC, once a week is selected to perform the backup and it is set to go to the desktop of my M1 MacBook. I do also use BackBlaze. So would it be better to make a folder on that SanDisk SSD for catalog backups and then change within the LRC settings for the backups to go to this folder? Was not sure if that would mess anything up on that SSD since that’s what I work from. I am ordering another SSD and purchasing CCC to copy over from the main SSD to the new SSD. Thank you for any advice.
You can do either or. You can leave them on your computer or put them on the external. It doesn’t matter. I don’t even do weekly backups, (although it’s not a bad idea) because I have my carbon copy and the cloud backups.
I received my R5ii I can just say: love it. But it's so more complicated fore me than old 5d iv😂😂😂 Thank you so much friend for touching us how to use It
Glad you enjoyed the video. One alteration that I might make is programming the AF area button to cycle through AF tracking subjects and turn off any subjects you do not regularly use. For example, if you are shooting wildlife limit the subject menu to animals and off. This way you can quickly toggle between tracking and no tracking.
I honestly don't know why I've been dealing with this dumb feature for 2 years before googling how to turn this off / revert back to legacy. Would've saved me hundreds of hours. Thanks!
Haha! Glad to help. ✌️
scam
Haha. Ok
I kept pausing then gave up.
😂
I have an interesting question here: besides my regular cameras, i frequently use a Pixel 7 for my pictures. And in most cases, I actually prefer the JPG over the RAW file (there is a lot of computng done by google on the photos). So I'd like to make the JPG the default visualization, not the RAW file. So my use case would be to bundle the JPG and RAW as one file (otherwise culling becomes a nightmare), but I want to cull it looking at the JPG file, not the RAW. Do you know if that is possible?
Sorry, I do not think that is possible.
Thank you!!! This has been such a silly change of Adobe! I put up with it for a year now -_-
Yeah, I put up with it for a little while too before searching how in the heck to turn it off. So annoying
LMAO at casually using one of the most insane landscape shots I've ever seen as an example image. Holy frijoles.
Haha!!! Thanks for that. I’ll have to go back and watch it so I can remember which one I used.
Easier way: press CROP tool, on top bar (STRAIGHTEN / VIEW: RULE OF THIRDS / DELETE CROPPED PIXELS) there is a STRAIGHTEN option button, press that and draw a line along the horizon, it will straight the horizon and auto crop the background showing around the straightened image. All easy in just one step.
That’s the thing about Photoshop. There’s a million ways to do every task. Thanks for the tip
That was so quick and simple!! Thank you for this video!
Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
As of today, this no longer works. They just plain force it on you now. Is Adobe speed running the 'how to alienate your user base' handbook? It's gotten so bad, just opening Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, Indesign or Premiere makes me cringe. Instead of fixing existing bugs and improving features, they are more concerned about releasing half assed updates and features nobody wants, forcing workflows on you, changing established tool behaviors, and introducing new major bugs with everything they do. It's just gone from innovative to tedious in the past decade.
Doesn't work if you're running CS6 and do not want to pay a monthly sub. PLEASE UPDATE!
Sorry, I do not have a copy of CS6. I cannot help with CS6 issues
i feel like an idiot for asking this but i have searched everywhere trying to find where to turn off eye tracking. I will want it most of the time but there are times i do not. Can you PLEASE tell me where to turn this off??
Hi sorry for the late response. If you tut. Off subject tracking in the purple AF menu you will have access to the traditional focus areas.
6:42 "no keyboard shortcut to create a layer mask" edit > keyboard shortcuts > layer > layer mask > reveal all (I made my shift+ctrl+m) You're welcome

@@naturemikephoto Can you provide the link?
Just tell us the basic way to import. Not interestede in your particular way. we are new to this. Just thge basics is want we want.
Sorry, if you do it wrong you’re going to loose files. This is the basic way. LRC has a complex way of handling files and if you’re not careful you’re going to have a mess on your hands. You can do it your own way but you’ll most likely loose photos along the way.
Very helpful. Thanks so much! For some reason my Photoshop switched back to its default settings. An upgrade I guess. Anyway, my regular 'Save As' is back thanks to your instructions!
Glad to help David.
after changing the default file 'location to on your pc', it still showing the cloud save dialog. need help
Unfortunately there is a bug that some people experience where the option is not available. See my response in the comments below I how you. May be able to resolve the issue.
The latest version just came out, and it looks a little different. After I installed the new version, it immediately updated the firmware on one of my cameras. I'm wondering if that is an improvement on the app. No one's made videos on the latest version yet.
Thanks for commenting. I’m traveling now so I cannot make a video at the current time
Hey Mike, my catalogue is huge is there a way to create a new catalogue with just my photos from 2024 still in it with the edited files still saved? I`m super scared of starting a new and everything being deleted
Hi, yes. You can export the 2024 folder as a catalog. I have a video on how to move photos between catalogs which might be helpful to you. I will paste it below. The only difference is you will not need to import the exported catalog into a different one. How To Move Photos From One Lightroom Catalog To Another. th-cam.com/video/bzlidcHMOtI/w-d-xo.html
Thank you, was really helpful.

it could also be annotated with a -2 if a photo was exported into another program or editor and reimported to Lightroom, so the -2 could be the enhanced version. It would be good to see both side by side and see whether they are located in the same directory also a direct comparison could be made to verify before deletion. But given Lightroom cannot even be bothered to enable users to have the most recent photo directories at the top, the most basic of expectations, I realise why people have given up and left in droves. Almost 20 years and we have to scroll past every directory; listed to get to the most recent one as reverse order is not an option, get better options in free software. Thanks for your video though a great starting point.
Good point. This technique is really designed for people who accidentally imported two copies and notice right away. As I mentioned in the video, it can’t reskin be trusted if you e already started editing photos. Thanks for your comment. Hopefully Adobe will give us the option search for duplicates using various metadata and ai in the future.

It's pretty solid. They all have their pros and cons but I've been a Canon shooter from the start so the R5ii was the natural progression.
Thanks for your video - You may want to correct your video, at 4:33 you say you are leaving your shutter set to electronic but you actually chose mechanical.
Thanks for the heads up. Good eye. That was most definitely an oops moment. I actually bounce between using electronic shutter and mechanical quite regularly depending on what I’m shooting so I do not think it’s too big of deal. TH-cam will not allow me to change the video after it is uploaded

Mike, Nice job on this walk thru.
Thanks Mark!
Thank you
No Problem, glad to help.
Nice video! I do have one slight gripe, though. In my experience, using focus priority does not always result in a sharper shot. I've had cameras still miss after using that setting. Hence, your use of the phrase "sharp and sharper" (or whatever you said, an hour has gone by since i heard that part of the video) is just not accurate even though that setting seem to imply such. The downside of using focus priority is that it can cause the camera to not fire in the precise instant you want it to, thus throwing you off your game. With today's high frame-rate camera, I feel it is better to just let the camera go when you tell it to and then let the camera re-attain the subject in the first few shots after firing. For me, I usually get it by the third or fourth shot, if i didn't get it on the first one. Oh, you forgot to add a boost button that you press to enable to H+ fps setting. Have a good one!
Thanks for the feedback. It’s certainly appreciated.
Thank You! Looking forward to your eye focus video.
I’m going to get it out as soon as I can. 🤠

Can you change Catalog location in future
Yes, there no issue with dragging the catalog to a different location. The photos and folders need to stay in the same location though unless you want to reconnect the files in LRC. I have a video about finding and reconnecting photos in LRC that could be helpful if you want to move the photos too. th-cam.com/video/R0p070YS5VA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JJuKFNHwtyF8qXsC
