It's yah boi Sven, and welcome to my channel, where I fish and give you my thoughts as I'm trying to catch interesting, beautiful, and even silly fishes that California has to offer!
I've always wanted to start a fishing vlog but shut myself down for years for the worst reasons (no one is going to watch, this isn't going to go anywhere, you can't talk on film, etc.). After I met my wife Amber, she encouraged me to follow this passion and give the good ole Sven attempt. From then on, she also made me realized that I was too stuck in my mindset focusing on what others wanted, and not enough of what I want! This channel will be my token of appreciation to her, myself, and hopefully, you guys too!
My content will consist mainly of fishing vlogs where I explore places near or far, see what I can catch, and give tips and tricks I've learned throughout my years of fishing.
If this sounds interesting, come fish and chill with me, subscribe so we can explore and learn together!
Cheers,
Sven

Fishing With Not Bait Cause Yah Done Goofed... ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
What's up anglers and anglets, it's yah boi Sven. I know I've been gone for quite some time, too long actually haha
Anyway, instead of my usual long video format, I decided to experiment with a new creative format.
This will be my short story series. I'm not sure how many I will make, not even sure if it will end up as a series, but either way, this will be easier for me to edit and upload than my usual long vidyas.
And honestly, I had a lot more fun making this video than I anticipated c:
Don't worry though, I'll still edit and upload the usual long videos when I have time, this was just a fun way to explore a different approach to my videos
Let minnow what you guys think! If you enjoy the format I'll keep dishing out more haha

#firstfishfreedom The basis for this tradition is to release the first fish you catch, regardless of what it is (prized, PB, good eats, maybe even world record someday haha). I will only keep the first fish if it is gravely wounded or gut shotted (and a species I can legally keep). If I keep the first fish, then I will pass on the tradition to the second fish, and so forth. Any day of fishing is a blessing, catching a fish is another blessing on top of that, so I want to return that blessing and luck back to the fish, so they may live another day, get bigger, and maybe I catch them again in the future c:

amzn.to/4eAFlNe (Handing M1 Spinning Reel, Size 2000 - While I usually use size 3000 reels as I like to pair it with 20lb braid, I opt for a smoller reel this time. amzn.to/3ZZLWvX (Beyond Braid Fishing Line, 20 lb, Green, 8x - A new braided line I've been using, it's pretty solid braided line. The casting is very smooth, and even though it's braid, I have little to no issues when I use it it rocky settings, which can be rough for braid due to abrasion, but I'd use braid there anyways lol. Pick the color and strand count you need, 4x is for toughness, 8x is for castability :D!)

A upgrade from my Hero 9, it has every feature I need, and also the video stabilization is a lot better than the 9 :o There's also a bunch of other features that it comes with, but I don't really use them since I usually film in 1080p anyways haha)
amzn.to/3NicEbV (GoPro Media Mod - A supplemental accessory for my GoPro, it basically unlocks a few more features for your GoPro, as well as has additional ports in case you wanted to plug in an external 3.5mm mic. If not, the media mod itself comes with a better built-in mic than the base GoPro, and you can change the settings to use which directional mic for more optimal audio recording c: the wind screen it comes with also helps out a bit with wind noises, not a lot but again, better than the default GoPro's lol)
amzn.to/3BEeeCg (GoPro Light Mod - an additional accessory you can get to attach to your GoPro Media Mod. While not necessary, it's a nice attachment so you have a light source attached, in case you wanted to film some night fishing or such. Unfortunately it doesn't plug in to where it uses the GoPro's battery, it uses it's own, but I resolved the issue by just having a spare power bank that's just for plugging into the light mod c:)

I really enjoy the text overlay in these, adds a lot to the shorts!

Yoooo, I've fished there before, but i never had any luck. My hook gets stuck between the kelp n rocks. How do you do it if u dont mjnd me asking?
Honestly that’s just how coast guard pier is, it’s incredibly rough and I snag a lot there too. Best thing to do is to keep your rig as simple as you can, less extensions means less chance it might get caught on something. Any weedless setup will help you punch through the kelp and fish inside it, otherwise I always try to do something like a simple dropper loop + torpedo sinkers for slender get outs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Carolina rig isn’t so bad but you wanna keep the leader short, I’d say 1 ft or less, the goal is to just get it out where fosh may have a good chance to smell the bait. Texas rig is also pretty good, weight and hook are right next to each other so chance of snag lessens even more ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ I’d say try the Texas or Carolina rig for simplicity and see how it works out for you c: size 6-2 is pretty good, fosh in Monterey usually chonky so you may land a surprise tank of a surfperch XD. Shromp, squib, anchovies, all pretty good baits. If you get frozen anchovies, I highly recommend bait thread as it gets pretty flimsy when it thaws. Shromp isn’t super flimsy but if they’re a lot of dinky bois nibbling away, the bait thread can help keep it together a bit longer. Squib is stupid sturdy so you don’t have to worry with the thread there lol. Size of weight depends on you, I’d say 2-3 oz minimum as it’s usually pretty wavey there lol. Torpedo or any slender shaped ones will be fine. If you get stuck, one hit or miss trick is to tighten your drag all the way, get as much tension on the line as you can, then pull the line close to the reel as hard as you can and let go. You’re trying to send a shockwave down the line to possibly shake it loose just enough to get it out. Minimum 20 lb line, 30 would be safer (in case you need to do shockwave trick or yank out of kelp). Don’t be afraid to reel back up and cast back again if you feel like the waves might push you into the rocks, also a good way to walk around until you find an open spot to cast in, everywhere on coast guard pier is pretty good 👍 let minnow if you have any further fishing related questions, always happy to help 😁 also soz for the text wall lol
so what bait would you reccommend for halibut at corona del mar?
Live bait is always gonna be the best for halibut ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ but sometimes that’s hard to get. You could try your luck with catching dinky smelt (around the 3-5 inch size) and live rig them out. Otherwise bait wise you can do whole or half baby squib, frozen anchovies are pretty good too c: if you’re going frozen anchovy route, highly recommend using bait thread to help secure it for casting, it can be very flimsy as it thaws out D: let minnow if you have any further fishing related questions, always happy to help ^-^
(Recommendation) you should try catching stuff in the tide pools 🤔
That would be a silly fun idea maybe in the future, dinky hooks for dinky fosh in tidepools 😁
Where’s those burgers from looks 🔥🔥
Small fact the seal beach jetty is part of ray bay on a side note amazing surfing spot
So cool! Nice fish :D was this in Orange County? Always wanted to try
Yeah this was in OC c: anywhere rocky or reefy has a good chance for Sheephead 😁
WE WANT MORE AMBER!!! (she is soooooooo funny)
She is definitely the funniest 😂 will try to get her in more vids if she’s free to fosh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Is their a size limit
No size limit for stripey surfperch bois c: I usually just toss them back if I didn’t plan to keep or they’re dinky xD
U don’t open the mussel since u cook it untill the shell opens
That’ll work too! Except I haven’t tried using cooked mussels before as bait, it may work as it would make the bait a bit sturdier on the hook….. 🤔
Hello, I need a video abt the method that u are fishing with. How is it called and how to make all this stuff to work properly. I would help me do much!
No worries I can help out right here c: basically it depends on the area you’re fishing, but overall a high low rig with 2 size 6 hooks with a good bait like shrimp or squid will work. If the area is very rocky then a torpedo sinkers is good to not snag as much, if the area is very sandy then a disc/ any flat sinker works well, if it’s very weedy then you can use a different rig that doesn’t snag as much like Carolina rigs. A lot of it depends on where you’re fishing and what you’re trying to go for, I like to mainly fish with bait as it is the most passive form of fishing, throw it out and wait until a fish comes 😂. You can also make it more simple with using something like a dropper loop rig, basically a high low rig with 1 less hook, let minnow if you have any further fishing related questions c:
what canal is that?, IV resident looking for spots
Tbh I’m not even sure anymore, also when your fishing the canals every spot is a good spot. Our tactic is to try a spot and see if we can catch something, if nothing bite or we accidentally spook them we just move to another. Rinse and repeat like 50 times and you’ll have a good day, fly lining a piece of shrimp on size 6 hook while being stealthy is the best way to do it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ good luck out there, let minnow what you end up catching ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ
@SvenGoesFishing do you still go fishing to oceanside? I study in San Marcos ajd the pier is quite close and I wanna get some keeper croaker but I've had no luck
Oh the memories. My friend and I used to go out on the end of the Seal Beach Jetty with a 12 Pack of Beer and fish for the giants. Mostly Rays. We also used to hitch hike to the Power Plant channel bridges to catch Buttermouth Perch off the pylons. Once hooked into a giant that took our line down the channel back toward the ocean. Fought it for quite some time before it let go.
Glad to hear my vidya brought back some memories, sounds like a fun adventure c: I have yet to go out all the way to the end of the jetty, not sure why but I usually stop about halfway as my go to spot 😂
I just hooked one today so weird but funny
Something you never expect for sure 😂 especially after you check your bait and think you snagged some seaweed hahaha
@@SvenGoesFishingI thought my hooks were getting tangled until I saw it, some other people caught a sand dollar
Haven’t caught a sand dollar yet but that must have been cool to see 😁 always neat when you catch something unexpected, once caught and restored a whole fishing rod lolol
That girl sounds like mabel from gravity falls
Same energy too haha
Your energy matches dipper too lol
It’s all coming together 😌
I've forgotten to bring the bait AND the lures more times than i want to admit... 😭 Sweet catch though!! And sweet to see ya uploading!!
It rly be like that sometimes haha, sometimes the extra gear you pack even if you never use it pays off lolol
Why are u using a carabiner as weight
Steel chain links c: they're surprisingly very snag resistant :D! depends on the link but each one of them is roughly 0.5 oz comparative to lead weights, if you ever have some give it a try!
Sven I go to that same exact spot, every chance I get really, good spot got a 2.3 pound spot fin croaker and 4 chonky opleleye and 2 dinky boys the other day
Heck yeah :D! I would not have expected a chonky spotfin croaker there, for sure the opaleyes though haha. What you catch the spotfin on?
Hey with those hooks do you set or do you just reel in like circles ?
I usually just reel them in, they're not like circles so you should still set them xD...
Hello what are the glove brand u are using thanks
I don't remember exactly which one they were anymore xD... but here's one I've been using recently that I like c: amzn.to/4fcyE3K I have mine in medium and it fits fine, very comfy and handy :D some people have mentions it may run a tad bigger but that wasn't an issue for me. Check it out if you happen to be interested c:
@@SvenGoesFishing thanks
I would have just dig around for sand fleas, if they live in your area
That’s what I would have done too, or like forage for mussels to use, except I was already in an MPA that was no takes of anything besides fish by hook and line xD….
Won't rust out
first stop yellowfin croaker, next stop white seabass :)
That would be a big jump, down if it happens ngl, but to be reasonable let’s go for like a calico first 😌
Good to see you again.
Thanks :D hopefully with this different creative approach I can continue to be back until I can get a regular long video ready ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ
Lure fisherman-unlocked
As it was once said before, “necessity is the mother of innovation”. Granted all I did was find a lure/ tossed it around until something happened but… yah know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I love your positive attitude! No bait? No problem sven will prevail!
If there’s a will there’s a way 😂 gotta make use of the 50 million lures I end up buying and never use anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thinking about fishing here what bait are you using and are you casting in the tide pools 🤔
Bait wise I like using shrimp or squid, anchovies or sardine pieces that are bait threaded work rly well too c: we are casting as far out as we can without getting wet 😂
@@SvenGoesFishing thanks
@wannabearctic np, always happy to help c:
What bait were u using
Good ole reliable shromp c: Trey was also using shromp and yet he was the one catching more, while using the same bait 😂
Oooooo
😁😁😁
heaps of fish on that thing
So many foshhhhh
@@SvenGoesFishing piles of em
Now I need to just catch me a lingcod there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Mmm I see mmmm 🤔
Not the easiest place to fish, but a pretty fun one 😁
Appreciate it been running to big hooks on hi lo feeling nibbles prob to big for them to take
It be like that sometimes, always good to downsize hooks if you feel the nibbles but get no bites 😂 that way you at least figure out what’s taking your bait ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Is this near the ventura harbor
This was somewhere off the highway so I’m not too sure about the distance and it was incredibly long ago 😅 still a super neat place to stumble upon and fish though c:
Im a local to ventura, i dont recognize this spot, was it north of the ventura pier and before santa barbara? Or was it south of the pier heading towards malibu? Thanks man @@SvenGoesFishing
@@jonahcombs451 not 100% sure anymore, but I would say north of Malibu and south of Oxnard, was just somewhere I randomly stopped along the highway xD...
@@SvenGoesFishing right on thanks, that's what I was thinking. Looks like a good spot! Cheers.
@jonahcombs451 it’s a fun but semi dangerous spot :O always fun to find random places like these when passing by haha
where is this spot ?
I went to coast guard a few weeks back and actually didn't lose my rig for the whole day! I was really surprised lol.
Then it was a good day 😁 I snag every once in awhile, more so when I’m not paying attention and the waves nudge my rig into the rocks 😂
@@SvenGoesFishing Yeah, did get snagged a few times but managed to get my rig back every time. I was messing around with a paperclip and an egg weight but it seems to work lmao
If it works it’s works 😂 also surprisingly if you can get steel chain links, there’s also super snag resistant :O
@@SvenGoesFishing i heard about that before, might try it also 👍👍
You can give nails a go too if you’re aiming for light line c: each steel link is about .5 oz btw, may vary on based the one you got but that’s my estimate 😂
I’ve been fishing off Westcliff in Santa Cruz for many years for ling cod and rockfish with 50 pound mono and 85 pound braid on a 9 foot ugly stick. It’ll rip through like nothing. Once in a while, I’ll lose a set up, but not that often. You gotta use and you gotta really fast to miss the snags.
Oh yeah that’ll definitely tear right through the kelp, solid setup for almost never losing your rig 😁
@@SvenGoesFishing, It’s fun, but sometimes it can get costly when you get snagged up because then you’re losing all that lead and hooks. I just bought me a Talica Only 16 and a Talica 12 because we’ve been tuna fishing a lot in San Diego. We are fishing crew in Santa Cruz called Salty Nuts fishing krew. We’re on Instagram and Facebook.. just a bunch of friends that like Fishing and share or experience. We just got back from a three day tuna trip in San Diego.. my Talica 10 on my tactical series seeker hooked by 40 pound to 50 pound bluefin tuna. Was awesome..
Heck yeah, that does sound like a lot of fun c: ima need to go for tuña one of these days, but I still very much enjoy just catching whatever bites inshore, even if they’re dinky bois 😁
I caught a jacksmelt on the San Francisco pier
Hurray :D! they're always fun to catch c:
i like that cove, too :)

@@SvenGoesFishing even a striped bass has less stripes, lol
@werftv4580 so they’re stripier than a striper? Lololol
@@SvenGoesFishing by a LOT, lol
Is 4 meters OK? Like I have 5, 4 of them are from 120cm to 2m, and one 4 meter rod I don't use for anything like I can't use it on most rivers or lakes
4m is pretty solid, you’ll have very good reach and leverage at coast guard pier c: what action and power is it?
4m will do fine I suspect...
And mono or fluorocarbon
I normally just use straight braid tbh 😂 but that’s just me, I would suggest mono as it’s a bit more abrasive resistance. If you do wanna use fluorocarbon, then only use it as a leader line since it won’t spoil very well, but fluoro is also pretty abrasive resistant c:
Awesome video brother,.What size sinker you suggest here for opal eye ? Torpedo?
Opaleye usually hang around the rocks close to the jetties, so I would suggest torpedo sinkers to help with potential snagging. They also hand more at mid depth rather than the bottom so you can tie your hook accordingly depending on how deep the area you may be fishing at c:
blacksmith are pretty
They are indeed very pretty, the smol ones got rly nice colors too c:
@@SvenGoesFishing even the big ones have a pretty face..
Tbh when they get rly big, they lowkey start looking like garibaldi but more condensed 😂
