    great vid, surprised you don't have two strips of wood or card glued to a board to push against and hold the Lino while you use the cutting tool.

      Thanks! Bench hooks are great, and lots of people like them. I kinda got frustrated with them bc it felt like my carving angles/mobility was limited. Kitchen drawer grip liners are a great alternative too. Honestly, I just forget to use one, so I'm used to being able to slide my block around on my desk as needed for carving angles.

    Can you use thick acrylic paint instead of ink?

    • @smishstudio

      You could try it! You'll still want to build up the ink in thin layers. Paint might not do as well for small details. Let us know if it works!

    Quick question if I may. What kind of wood do you use? I have used to do lino but I lost touch with it. Wood is a different material so it may be easier for me to get back into it. I do love your prints though. Very pretty.

    • @smishstudio

      I use 1/4" Shina Plywood from McClain's Printmaking Supplies. I've loved using it, but it is more difficult to carve than lino. The woodgrain texture in your prints is worth the effort though!

  • @radharcanna

    That’s a beautiful puddycat print. I’m surprised that after you’ve inked the lino so carefully and put it through the press, you don’t get a solid black all over. Why is that? Then again, perhaps you’re not looking for a solid colour and prefer that look! Enjoying your videos.

    • @smishstudio

      Thank you! I did want it to be a bit more solid, and I think the problem was from a few things. I didn't do enough test prints. I also carved the details very shallow and couldn't roll a thick enough layer of ink on. Sometimes the patchy areas look cool to me, so I don't mind it being a little lighter on some.

    Thanks so much for all this info! Iʻm looking to set up printmaking for a high school art classroom. Mostly planning on block printing, monotype, and collagraph. Any thoughts on the E-12 vs E-15? Is the micrometer gauge helpful/ necessary? Weʻve done a lot of printmaking by hand, but Iʻve never used a press and want to set this up right, for us all to grow into.Thank you again for being such a tremendous resource!

    • @smishstudio

      That's awesome! This press can also do etchings. The difference between the E12 and E15 is mainly price and print size. You just have to weight out what is more important. I don't have the micrometer guage, and I don't think it's necessary. Feeling out the pressure by hand and doing a few test prints before each printing session will help you get in tune with the press. I have a press recommendations video with other options that might be helpful!

    Hi! I'm so grateful for your content. I'm curious how high can this press barrel be raised for wood block printing on fabric or mounted lino. thanks!

    • @smishstudio

      The barrel will raise to about 1/2” or 1”. You could print on tshirts with unmounted linoleum or 1/4” wood blocks. There’s an artist called Noosh Studio on instagram that prints tshirts with these presses. I don’t recommend the Conrad press for mounted linoleum. You could check out the woodzilla press for that. Best of luck!

    • @smishstudio

      Yep! I keep using the same glass. I have a few that I've scavenged from different things like broken frames or glass tables. I just use mild dish soap and warm water to wash them. I specifically use an ink that is water/soap washable to make it easier for clean up.

    what is the protocol with printing with blocks that have been inked in the past? Is that possible? Advisable? is there a cleaning process?

    • @smishstudio

      You can keep printing with previously used blocks. There could be an issue with printing if there's an uneven layer of ink left on the block or some of the details were filled in with ink. You can wash/clean your linoleum blocks with lukewarm water and mild soap. I'd recommend trying to keep the back dry, and pressing the block flat with a heavy book after washing. It's also good practice to print off excess ink onto scrap paper or newsprint at the end of a print session.
